Founded by Javier Peres in 2002, Peres Projects is a contemporary art gallery promoting contemporary American and European artists to an international audience. Gallery artists have been included in a wide array of internationally renowned exhibitions and their works are regularly exhibited by leading museums. Working closely with collectors, art advisors, and institutions, the gallery assists in building important collections of contemporary art. In keeping with our mission to advance the careers of the artists whom we exhibit and represent, we regularly participate in leading international art fairs and publish artist books, monographs and catalogs. Since the gallery’s inception, it has operated project spaces and presented important exhibitions of contemporary art in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Athens, and Berlin.

Mission: To advance the careers of the artists we exhibit and represent.

Melike Kara’s practice explores a highly unique and personal approach to figuration that is informed by diverse interests ranging from 20th century German figurative traditions, a deep interest in social hierarchies, as well as both her familial history of migration and the realities of straddling two cultures.

Blair Thurman’s practice connects diverse cultural and symbolic facets of Americana with Pop Art and abstract geometric art of the 50s and 60s. Thurman’s shaped canvases exist on the periphery of both painting and sculpture simultaneously. In Small World from 2018, we encounter all of these aspects of his work in a relatively compact painting, yet one with a great deal of energy, and in a form that the artist has repeated on different occasions giving also a nod to the importance of seriality in his work. The Swiss artist John Armleder has said that Thurman’s work is a lot about customization, an exciting aspect we see in many of his great works.

Richard Kennedy’s SHOUT is comprised of automatic gestures, an expression of the subconscious, through loose brush strokes covering the canvas. Kennedy brings his background in movement and choreography to the canvas with his gestural paintings, where he layers imagery, color and language, creating visually dense works that reveal new details upon multiple viewings.

In Untitled, Paolo Salvador renders a group of figures on a beach, their perspective flattened while their surface is layered, their composition loose yet labored. They are autobiographical but evoke, or better said, imply allegory. Like the rest of us in contemporary life, the work exists in this state of flux and contradiction. The painting tells an old tale in a new language.

From our inception, Peres Projects has focused on identifying emerging international talent. This year we are introducing the paintings of Paolo Salvador (b. 1990, Peru). Salvador recently earned an MFA from The Slade School, London and is now based in Berlin. His debut solo exhibition with the gallery will open this summer.

Canadian, Berlin based Beth Letain works within the language of abstraction to explore the potentials of color. A trained scientist, Letain creates subtle variations of color in each of her paintings. Her last exhibition at the gallery received considerable critical attention, art critic William Kherbek writing for Flash Art said “Letain’s abstraction is of an omnivorous sort. The viewer could just as easily draw connections with the work of Peter Joseph as with Jason Martin or Helen Frankenthaler... Such dialogues only tell part of a story􏱔 Letain’s voice is her own, which is all the more impressive considering how little she gives the viewer to work with: a stack of rectilinear reds in precarious, parallel columns in Perihelion, a warren of square red cells of different sizes in Antidote.

For our OVR presentation we are debuting a new type of monochromatic painting composed of square forms made of short lines, Heliades 2, 2020. The title references Greek mythology, specifically the color of the golden amber tears of the Heliades, the daughters of the sun god Helios.

Shuang Li’s solo exhibition, I Want to Sleep More but by Your Side, opens Friday February 28th. Li’s newest works grapple with eroticism in digital spaces, gendered and reproductive labour, and geopolitics. Her works explore the link between desire and commodity fetishism, as it is enmeshed in global systems of demand and the corresponding invisibility of supply. For her debut solo exhibition with the gallery she will present new paintings, sculptures and a video installation.

Shuang Li (b. 1990, China) earned an MA from New York University, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development (2014) and a BA in Foreign Languages from Civil Aviation University of China (2012).

Repost: M WOODS is proud to announce the first museum-based solo exhibition by American artist Austin Lee (b. 1983). Entitled Human Nature, the exhibition will be Lee’s largest and most comprehensive exhibition to date, and includes three new major works: a public sculpture commission and two large-scale installations. .

Reflecting Lee’s creative process of producing artworks initially in virtual reality and later materialising them as paintings, installations and sculptures, the exhibition begins with a series of immersive chambers in the basement of M WOODS Hutong, and continues to unfold throughout the museum following the different sequences of Lee’s artistic process. Each of the six galleries in the museum move between the spheres of virtual reality and the signs and symbols that Lee observes in the natural world, to create a new experiential unity between the two.

New commissions that feature in the exhibition include Lee’s first public sculptural work titled Relax Fountain (2019), a new outdoor water fountain placed in front of the M WOODS Hutong museum, and the new rooftop commission Sun With Bird (2019) a large outdoor garden installation on the rooftop gallery of the museum. Several new works in the exhibition are directly informed by the M WOODS collection; and a special studio space and knowledge room, where Lee worked and created art during his stay in Beijing, will also be open to the public. .
.
“both Austin Lee’s first museum exhibition “Human Nature” and the late Raoul De Keyser’s first survey exhibition in Asia, titled “Remark”, signify the museum’s commitment to providing institutional space for artists and art in China with international significance” says M WOODS Artistic Director and Chief Curator, Victor Wang.
.
