Richard Kennedy’s 2nd solo exhibition “Street Prophecy” closes friday June 12th. Recently reviewed in @artforum by @geoff_mak

Richard Kennedy’s paintings and sculptures might be seen as an avatar, or extension, of his operas. For his 2019 show “(G)hosting” at Peres Projects, the artist presented an opera showcasing his talents in choreography and scenography, and narrated in four acts a murderous queer romance that begins on a dating app (an iPhone doubles as the work’s filming device). Reflecting on the entangled, racialized subject positions of the two characters (played by Kennedy and Christopher Argodale) and the language that both describes and scaffolds intimate affairs, Kennedy’s presentations regularly probe the fraught relationship between the Western cultural canon and Black experience.

The artist’s new show “Street Prophecy” comprises nine new paintings, three busts, and a pair of soft sculptures of painted top and overalls (all works 2020). The canvases display Kennedy’s foray into wild, kinetic color, in contrast to his previous monochromatics from 2019, and show Abstract Expressionist brushstrokes layered under words drawn from the vernacular of queer club life. In the paintings AZEALIA and STUN STUN, the canvases are awash in brushstrokes of vibrant pinks, plums, grays, and ice blues, and epithets including “BLACK UNICORN” and “STUNT QUEEN”—signifiers that can be derisive or empowering, depending on the speaker. Kennedy’s approach sees words as an active, transitive force capable of adapting to a variety of contexts, whether it be the street, the club, or the gallery. The artist also recognizes that his works function as luxury objects, on sale in essentially a high-end retail space, which nevertheless repel fixed legibility and vibrate with colored luminosity. They gesture toward Kennedy’s larger operatic Gesamtkunstwerk, which thrives when the threshold of where the signification of the Black and queer body is permitted representation is pressured to its breaking point. By Geoffrey Mak for Artforum, Critics’ Picks.

11/05/2020

Richard Kennedy, Street Prophecy on view at the gallery and online through June 12th.

Richard Kennedy’s second solo exhibition at the gallery introduces three new bodies of works in soft sculptures, paintings and busts depicting an opera deconstructed into its various parts. Hope, longing, tragedy, comedy, opulence and destruction each play a role, whether formally or through the texts which emerge from the heavily painted canvases and textiles.

The term “opera”, borrowed from the Italian word for “work”, implies a total Gesamtkunstwerk incorporating diverse mediums, collaboration, virtuosity, and drama. Kennedy appropriates and redefines both the multi-media modes of production as well as the dramatic tropes of the “highest art form” of the European tradition to embody a black queer experience. The works in the exhibition hover between abstraction and figuration, self-portraiture and lyrical verse, the historic and the exuberant. We are left with an intangible connection to the experience of excellence within otherness.

Richard Kennedy (b. 1985, Long Beach, California) is an artist, experiential composer, and librettist originally from Middletown Ohio and currently living in Berlin, Germany. He received his MFA from the Milton Avery Institute at Bard College. Kennedy is a 2019 MacDowell Colony Fellow and recently completed residencies at Open Forum Berlin and Mana Contemporary. In 2019, Kennedy presented a solo exhibition at Peres Projects in Berlin, and his Collapsed Operetta “A Touch of Elegance” premiered at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Virginia Commonwealth University curated by Amber Esseiva. In 2020-2021, Kennedy will perform his opera Black Rage at the Zabludowicz Collection, and participate in a group exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo, curated by Marie-Ann Yemsi. He has recently presented solo performance pieces at The Studio Museum Harlem, MoMA, The Shed, The Kitchen, BOFFO Performance Festival and Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles.

For our participation in the Frieze Viewing Room, we are presenting works by gallery artists. We are featuring Donna Huanca’s (b. 1980, Chicago) new painting K'AK' CHAN YOPAAT, 2020. The body and skin are ongoing points of focus in Huanca’s work, where she employs them as both surface and material. The painted performers, who populate the immersive environments composed of Huanca’s studio works, dissimulate amongst the various elements, joining and extending them; this oscillation in and out of sentience composes an allegory of the fragmentation of identity. Donna Huanca’s paintings are derived from these durational performances. After collaging and printing images from past performances and prior works onto canvas, Huanca paints over this documentation with oil, sand and raw pigments - on the one hand camouflaging this history, while at the same time extending the duration of the perfor- mance into perpetuity. Recently, she returned her focus to the performers from her installations and created complex “portraits” that capture their likeness and give us an opportunity to perpetually witness their stillness. Recent solo exhibitions include OBSIDIAN LADDER curated at the Marciano Foundation, Los Angeles; LENGUA LLORONA curated by Aukje Lepoutre Ravn Copenhagen Contemporary, Copenhagen; PIEDRA QUEMADA curated by Stella Rollig the Belvedere Museum, Vienna, Yuz Museum, Shanghai and Zabludowicz Collection, London.
