On Thu 11 June at 20 h we are presenting “What’s Underground About Marshmallows? Texts by and about Jack Smith” (Alexander Verlag Berlin) edited by Marc Siegel.

Marc Siegel will present the book along with a screening Birgit Hein’s KINO ’74 – JACK SMITH (1974) and Jack Smith’s NO PRESIDENT (1967).

The bilingual book brings together a selection of writings by the pathbreaking US q***r artist for the first time in German. The book contains essays by such key Smith commentators as Stefan Brecht, J. Hoberman, Jonas Mekas and Susan Sontag and numerous illustrations of Smith’s performances and projects in West Germany in the 1970s and ‘80s.

Filmmaker and researcher Rachel Micallef Somerville and documentary filmmaker and cinema technician Giulio Rasi made the installation ON/OFF.

ON/OFF is a three-screen installation tracing the Arsenal cinema across its homes in Schöneberg, Potsdamer Platz and Wedding. On the outer screens, we revisit the cinema’s past through fiction films taking place within those walls. The center belongs to the present. Here, a single screen turns on and off within its own reflection.

Films shown: Noch nicht und nicht mehr (Ingo Kratisch & Jutta Sartory, 1991/2000), Mother and Daughter, or the Night Is Never Complete (Lana Gogoberidze, 2023), Made in Germany and USA (Rudolph Thome, 1974), Selbstkritik eines bürgerlichen Hundes (Julian Radlmaier, 2017), Unter dem Pflaster ist der Strand (Helma Sanders-Brahms, 1975), Spell Reel (Filipa César, 2017), Denkmalpflege (Riki Kalbe, 1993), and And-Ek Ghes (Philip Scheffner & Colorado Velcu, 2016).

Rachel Micallef Somerville (b.2000, Malta) is a filmmaker and researcher based in Berlin. Alongside her artistic work, she initiates screenings, discussions and workshops within artist-led and community contexts. She is a member of LaborBerlin.
Giulio Rasi(b.1989 in Verona, Italy) is a documentary filmmaker and cinema technician. He lives and works in Berlin.

The installation is free of charge and can be viewed in front of the cinema auditorium.

New at arsenal distribution: AFTERLIVES by Kevin B. Lee

AFTERLIVES by Kevin B. Lee is a reflective and critical essay film that uses found footage and media analysis to explore how images shape our understanding of history, memory, and contemporary reality.

The film works as a starting point for an ongoing critical conversation about image culture, technology, and perception—opening questions rather than closing them.

The film launches with a small-scale premiere and will be accompanied by discussions with the director.

Premiere screening + Q&A:
On June 11 at 6:30 PM, at Wolf Kino, AFTERLIVES will be shown with a Q&A session with Kevin B. Lee.

Second screening + aftertalk:
On June 12, the film will be screened again, at Flutgraben e.V., followed by a conversation with Kevin B. Lee and Orit Halpern (7:30–9:00 PM screening, 9:00–10:00 PM aftertalk).

Ehsan Khoshbakht, Kurator unserer Retrospektive Great Expectations – Britisches Nachkriegskino 1945–1960, war zu Gast im Podcast Vollbild von Deutschlandfunk Kultur und spricht mit Patrick Wellinski über die Reihe, die morgen im Kino Arsenal startet.
Ab morgen, Do 4. Juni, ist die Retrospektive im Kino Arsenal zu sehen: zwölf Filme, von der heiteren Komödie bis zum düsteren Film noir, darunter Werke von David Lean, Michael Powell und Carol Reed sowie selten gezeigte Entdeckungen, zum Teil in raren 35mm-Kopien. Den Auftakt macht SIMON AND LAURA (Muriel Box, UK 1955) um 19:30 Uhr.

🎥 🌟 Debra Granik war bei uns zu Gast! Am Eröffnungswochenende wurden Ihre Filme WINTER’S BONE (USA 2010), LEAVE NO TRACE (USA 2018) und ihre aktuelle Langzeitdokumentation CONBODY VS EVERYBODY (USA 2025) gezeigt. Jeden Abend stand sie im Arsenal zusammen mit Birgit Kohler für ein Gespräch und anschließendem Q & A auf der Bühne und gab Einblicke in Ihre Arbeit.

Esther Buss schreibt im Filmdienst zu Über Leben in Amerika – Die Filme von Debra Granik (29.5–12.6.2026). Im Mittelpunkt steht der Film CONBODY VS EVERYBODY (USA 2025), der heute im Arsenal gezeigt wird. Debra Granik ist zu Gast wird im Anschluss mit Birgit Kohler über den Film und ihre Arbeit sprechen.

Das Berliner Kino Arsenal zeigt Anfang Juni 2026 eine Werkschau zu Debra Granik. Ein Porträt der auf Filme über Außenseiter spezialisierten US-Regisseurin.

In THE SCARECROW lebt Farmarbeiter Keaton in einem einfachen Häuschen, in dem zahlreiche mechanische Gerätschaften das Leben vereinfachen. SHERLOCK JR. zeigt Buster als Filmvorführer, der eigentlich Detektiv sein möchte. Als er im Kino einschläft, befreit er im Traum die Familie seiner Geliebten aus den Händen eines Kriminellen, was natürlich nicht ohne zahllose Verwicklungen abgeht.

Eine besondere Beziehung hat er zu seinem Uropa, der leidenschaftlich Geschichten von früher erzählt, schöne wie auch traurige, die zusammen mit liebevoll gezeichneten Animationen Magie in den Alltag bringen.
