DJ Roy Thode Valentine's Mix - Music From My Heart - The Underground, NYC, 14 Feb, 1981

Happy Valentine’s Day!
Today it’s a huge honor to be able to share yet another special moment in dancefloor history eternalized by this recording from Roy Thode’s archive, all made possible thanks to his dear friend, Marsha Stern
Recorded at the Underground on February 14th, 1981, this mix has been stored for just over 4 decades, to think that a spool of microscopic magnetized metal particles will give us the opportunity to re-experience what Roy Thode brought to the floor that night years before many of us were even born is goosebump inducing for us to say the least. At this point there should be no introduction needed to explain the virtuosity of this dancefloor maestro. Roy was a true Disc Jockey in essence, this is what he did, and his unique love for the craft can be heard loud and clear. Undoubtedly one of our biggest inspirations to us as DJs today.
We hope this mix takes you to a very special place because it surely came from one as Roy had self-titled this night “Music From My Heart”.
Let us all be Roy’s Valentine today - Love ❤️

NEW MIX UP!
Start your week right with a mix we've been wanting forever now, from the legendary Jussi Kantonen. Highly respected as one of the top scholars in pre-MIDI dancefloor culture. A once atendee at places like the Paradise Garage and The Saint, Jussi's experience in club land is historically vast. You might have been lucky to hear him share bits of his insane collection at events like camp cosmic but if not you can check out his contributions to one of the best blogs on dancefloor obscurities et al. - Overfitting Disco. Split Secs / Franz Scala : Untitled
available on http://soundmetaphors.com

On the A side we have the original tracks starting with Split Secs - Accept The Answer which is quite the slow burner, easy building up and keeping you in a state of bewilderment with weird synths, sounds and melancholic vocals floating around. When you’re still reminiscing about the first track, Franz Scala decides to up the game with his ‘Overflash’ that contains a kick that makes the walls of every room buzz. His familiar sound can be heard throughout the whole track and will for sure make every dancefloor move. Moving over to the AA side, Split Secs has made an absolute stellar of a remix of Franz Scala unrecognizable but surely not less danceable original. Heavy bassline, dark and dreamy pads and funky percussion alternate each other in this remix which can be described in so many words, but is best to just start listening to. Which is exactly what also should be done to the remix by Franz Scala. Taking the slow burner by Split Secs to another tempo and level by adding his familiar sound but what makes this track so special is the synths that have been perfectly applied and will bring some heat and sweat to the dancefloor.

Roland Bocquet : Paradia
available on http://soundmetaphors.com

Originally released in 1977 on the legendary Cobra label, Paradia is the first solo album by Roland Bocquet, keyboard player for cult French band Catharsis. The (mostly) instrumental album is a wonderful oddball adventure blending cosy ambient, euro-folk, synth escapades, Latin fusion with a French touch, gentle bossa, a tiny bit of minimalist chanson, and a heavy dose of je-ne sais-quoi. The result is soothing, mysterious in the sweetest ways, and fully atmospheric: a must have for fans of Pascal Comelade, Mort Garson, Dominique Guiot, ZNR, Vladimir Cosma, movie soundtracks, library music, and unclassifiable gems. It’s hard to describe but lovely to experience! Paradia, Paradia, Paradiaaaaaaaa…

Mori Ra strikes back at MM Discos with “Gaia Edits"! After the successful release back in May on the label, Da Silva and DJ Katah welcome again Osaka’s best record collector with 4 new high quality editions. Mixing unknown sources with ethnic references, wicked percussion, charming marimbas and an endless reel of psychedelic elements, this is a record done for the soul - spiritual, mystic, highly addictive and 100% danceable. A very special release where the Japanese artist has involved his son who helped with choosing the source material for the record. Enjoy the trip!

(2021)

Legendary Italian drummer Tullio De Piscopo recorded the seminal soundtrack Concerto Per Un Film: L' Arma in 1978. Two of the devilishly delightful disco tracks from it now make their way onto this tidy 7" from Groovin, who are following up their much loved rare groove Italo 7" series in style. 'Black Star' is all about the knotted funk bass, with the patter of toms up top and mysterious leads taking you into the unknown. On the flip, 'Temptation' has another exotic lead synth that takes you into a colourful world of psyched out disco sound.

Santilli : Tidal (2021)
available on http://soundmetaphors.com

“Keeping his carbon footprint at a minimum, Santilli sails from Sydney to Hamburg via ten textured vignettes delicately drawn with guitar, bass and organic percussion. Relaxing, reflective and endlessly beautiful, ‘Tidal’ explores elemental inspiration through a humanistic gaze. Whether you know Max Santilli through Ken Oath duo Angophora, previous releases ‘Surface’ and ‘In Circles’, or this is your first time making his acquaintance, you’ll agree he’s right at home on the Growing Bin. The multi-instrumentalist crafts exquisite acoustic music in tune with the finer moments of Windham Hill and ECM; a perfect fusion of talent, balance and the emotion shared by each release on the Hamburg label. As befits its inspiration ‘Tidal’ is an organic affair, related through bright acoustic guitar, hazy chimes and hand played percussion. Where the Australian draws you in with hypnotic repetition, the subtlety, warmth and tonal variation serve as a welcome reminder we’re living off grid. Though expert fretwork often takes centre stage, especially on the delicate B1 ‘Warm You Give’, it’s the blend of kalimba, woodblock, hand drums and shaker which truly transport the listener through open waters; a rhythmic breeze carrying us through the maritime drones and bowed squall. At times the salt air is spiced with cardamom and cloves (‘Sea’) or lemongrass and galangal (‘Valleys’), as we skirt the Indian Ocean or the Java Sea. ‘Lapse’ provides subtle hints of fourth world jazz as mallets take the lead, leaving the guitar to provide its own shimmering texture. Clear your mind, clear your schedule and make some time for ‘Tidal’, an opportunity to breathe in time with the planet.”

Motorbass : Pansoul
available on http://soundmetaphors.com

Remastered version, Originally released in 1996

Motorbass was a French house duo originating from Paris and consisting of Phillippe Zdar (later of Cassius) and Étienne de Crécy. Between them, they formed Motorbass to deliver a single album, decisive for French electronic music: Pansoul. The name of this self-produced record reflects its ambition: an exhaustive exploration of soulful electro, fed with hip-hop samples and throbbing bass. When it was released in 1996, only 20,000 copies of Pansoul were pressed. The following year, it was impossible to find.

Arthur Russell : Another Thought
available on http://soundmetaphors.com

Originally issued on Phillip Glass's (then Decca financed) Point Blank label (CD only) a year after Arthur's tragic death in 1993, Another Thought features a mostly bare-boned Russell, his vocals mixed with cello plucks and bowing, occasional percussion and other subtle touches. Almost all the tracks are exclusive to this release, two tracks appeared on the Soul Jazz comp and here you also get an alternative take on the classic 'In the Light Of The Miracle’. We're not ashamed to admit shedding a tear or two listening to the sheer life-affirming qualities of this record over the years. It's not sad, it's just heart-breakingly beautiful, stripped to the bare essentials of Arthur's voice and cello dappled with effects and backed with his own drum machine, plus congas, sax and keys from longtime collaborators Peter Zummo, Elodie Lauten, and Mustafa Ahmed, among others. In the most transcendent sense, it's music that occupies its very own genre, a magical soundworld all of its own, ready for you to visit when times are good, and perhaps even more so when they're bad. Although it’s been available on CD, first on that 1994 pressing for Point Music, and later in 2006 for Philip Glass's Orange Mountain Music, the magic is arguably enhanced on wax. It's like finding a new, secret entrance to your favourite place in the world. Even passing Russell fans will likely know a few of its charms such as 'This Is How We walk On The Moon', 'Another Thought' itself, or the alternate version of 'Keeping Up' from 'The World Of...', and we envy those of you about to encounter it for the first time.

Robson Banda The New Black Eagles - Soweto (2021)
available on http://soundmetaphors.com

Robson Banda and the New Black Eagles were formed in 1980 and built up a discography of eight solid albums. Born in Petauke, in eastern Zambia, Banda was an aspiring freedom fighter who failed to cross into Mozambique to join the Liberation War. Instead, he ended up in Kadoma, where he started his music career. While his roots were foreign, his music was quintessentially Zimbabwean, as these lively mid-eighties recordings show. Based in Chegutu, the newly formed group recorded their debut, Sidhudla, and the chart-topping Dzinomwa MunaSave, before crafting their magnum opus: SOWETO. Nyami Nyami Records has announced the reissue of the Zimbabwean classic, produced at the peak of jit’s popularity in the mid-1980s, with the same tracklist and original artwork. In SOWETO, Robson Banda and the New Black Eagles injected a vibrant musical sensibility into the cultural landscape of their homeland, fusing the rapid rhythms of jit and the more intimate musicality of chimurenga, two major genres of the time. Two tracks are already available: the title track “Soweto,” an uplifting declaration of solidarity with victims of Apartheid, and “Farirai Mwana Auya,” which employs traditional chimurenga rhythms to celebrate the return of a child from work in the big city. Experience the track “Masvingo Netara” on PAM, a nightclub staple that opens on a pumping bassline. It is part love song, part social commentary, applying a style popular among Zimbabwean artists of the time, in which the male artist feigns a woman’s voice to warn men about social ills and bad behaviour.

Super Biton De Ségou : Afro-Jazz-Folk Collection Vol.1
available on http://soundmetaphors.com

The Super Biton has existed since the 60s, like Ségou, its orchestra, the Super Biton has always remained behind what was done in Bamako and in the big cities of Africa. The Ségou orchestra developed and incorporated amplified instruments that mingle with brass, in particular electric guitars, symbols of modernity at the time. It opens up to Cuban music, and congas and bongos complement the sound of the orchestra. The group drew a unique sound from it, a perfect balance between tradition and the modern. There are about fifteen artits on stage, singers, guitarists drummer and percussionists. The Super Biton has for years been the best known and most sought-after orchestra of Mali outsid the country's borders, the Super Biton transcends the only Bambara heritage with its repertoire. Ségou is crossroads between Bambara, Fulani, Mandingo and Somono cultures and Biton has drawn on all these traditions to creat a repertoire extremely rich in rhythms and words. Some musicians completed their training in Cuba. They play "bambara jazz", incorporating a lot of brass instruments such as saxophone, trumpet, clarinet. The compositions are modern and sophisticated. Mieruba Art Center is a place dedicated to the transmission and safeguarding of Malian musical heritage through musical exchange between the older and newer generation - Artist residences, music lessons, rehearsals, Workshops, Masterclasses - and so on. Just as happy former musicians of Mali, the members of Super Biton give lessons on site. It is also the office of the Mieruba-ML label in the same place where Deviation Records is collaboration for the second time on the album - After the « Lost Maestros Collection » - with the support of La Manufacture de Vinyles. Phil of Deviation Records tells: "I am very enthusiastic at the idea of offering you these two volumes of the History of the Super Biton of Ségou, Clique of Super Heroes of sound, a source of inspiration for generations of musicians, DJs and also griots and storytellers of great renown! …
