🧵Die Textilkünstlerin, die die Webkunst befreit hat: Sofie Dawo.

Sie befreite die Webkunst seit den 1960ern von der bloßen Bildübersetzung und verhalf ihr zur autonomen Kunstgattung. Statt Motive abzubilden, ließ Dawo das Material sprechen: Fäden geknotet, beschnitten, mit Metall und Nylon angereichert, Gewebe bewusst beschädigt. Regeln? Bewusst gebrochen. Das Ergebnis: textile Skulpturen, die in den Raum greifen.

🧵The textile artist who set the art of weaving free: Sofie Dawo.

Since the 1960s, she has transformed the art of weaving, elevating it from mere pictorial representation to an autonomous art form. Rather than depicting motifs, Dawo allows the material to speak for itself, using knotted, trimmed and enriched threads, as well as deliberately damaged fabric. Rules? Deliberately broken. The result is textile sculptures that extend into the space.

🌿 Ein Tag im Grünen 🌿

Am 13. September ist es wieder soweit: Zum fünften Mal lädt das Kulturforum Berlin zum großen Kulturforumsfest ein. Passend zum Tag des offenen Denkmals steht diesmal die Architektur im Mittelpunkt.

Rund um Berlins längste Tafel auf dem Scharounplatz erwartet euch den ganzen Tag über ein abwechslungsreiches Programm aus Musik und kulinarischen Highlights. Auf vier Rundgängen lässt sich das Kulturforum aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven entdecken: architekturhistorisch, künstlerisch beim Urban Sketching oder beim Photo-Walk.

🌿 A Day in the Green 🌿

On September 13, it’s that time again: For the fifth time, the Kulturforum Berlin is hosting its big Kulturforum Festival. In keeping with Open Monument Day, the focus this time is on architecture.

All around Berlin’s longest table on Scharounplatz, a varied program of music and culinary highlights awaits you throughout the day. Four guided tours let you discover the Kulturforum from different perspectives: through architectural history, artistically via urban sketching, or on a photo walk.

Nachts im Museum 🔦

Wer erfahren will, warum Adolf Loos das Ornament zu einem Verbrechen erklärte, wie beinahe „kriminell“ die Perfektion der Kleider von Madame Grès ist oder den „guten“ und „schlechten“ Geschmack des Kunstgewerbes entdecken will, ist am 29. August bei uns im KGM genau richtig!

Im Rahmen der Lange Nacht der Museen Berlin könnt ihr alle 60 Minuten bis in die Nacht hinein an unseren thematischen Expressführungen teilnehmen.

Ab 18:15 Uhr: Ornament und Verbrechen – Crashkurs zu Adolf Loos
Ab 18:30 Uhr: Der perfekte Fall. Drapierung als Obsession
Ab 19:45 Uhr: Crime of Taste. Wann wird Geschmack verdächtig?

Am Kulturforum und an der Museumsfassade erwarten euch außerdem Lichtinstallationen von Wolfgang Horn und Barbara Esser, die textile Strukturen und Bewegung zu poetischen Bildräumen zusammenbringen. Eingebettet davon ein musikalisches Highlight: Auf der VeloStage der Berliner Philharmoniker spielen Mitglieder der Berliner Philharmoniker und der Karajan-Akademie Kurzkonzerte um 21, 22 und 23 Uhr.

Night at the Museum 🔦

If you’re curious to know why Adolf Loos called ornamentation a crime, how Madame Grès’s dresses reached a level of perfection that is almost „criminal“, or how to distinguish between „good“ and „bad“ taste in decorative arts, then KGM is the place for you on 29 August!

As part of Lange Nacht der Museen Berlin, you can join themed express tours every 60 minutes into the night.

From 6:15 pm: Ornament and Crime – Crash Course on Adolf Loos
From 6:30 pm: The Perfect Case. Draping as an Obsession
From 7:45 pm: Crime of Taste. When Does Taste Become Suspicious?

You’ll also find light installations by Wolfgang Horn and Barbara Esser at the Kulturforum and along the museum façade. These installations combine textile structures and movement to create poetic visual spaces. Nestled among them is a musical highlight: On the Berlin Philharmonic’s VeloStage, members of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Karajan Academy will perform short concerts at 9 pm, 10 pm and 11 pm.

Unser Objekt des Monats:
Diese Fayence-Terrine aus Straßburg, entstande zwischen 1740-1760, ist ein sogenanntes Schaugericht und damit ein echter Tausendsassa der Barock- und Rokoko-Tafel. An den Höfen von Königen und Fürsten wurden die Tafeln einst mit echten Tieren, Früchten und Gemüsen wie Kohlköpfen geschmückt. Diese naturalistischen Nachbildungen aus Porzellan und Fayence ersetzten die echten Schmuckstücke und dienten gleichzeitig als praktische Gefäße für Suppe oder Ragout. So verbirgt sich hinter dem Blätterkleid ein voll funktionsfähiges Tafelgeschirr.

Our object of the month:
This faience tureen from Strasbourg, created between 1740-1760, is what is known as a "showpiece dish" (Schaugericht), a true all-rounder of Baroque and Rococo banquet tables. At the courts of kings and princes, tables were once adorned with real animals, fruits, and vegetables like cabbages. Over time, these realistic porcelain and faience replicas replaced the real decorations while still serving as practical vessels for soups or ragouts. Behind all those leaves, you will find a fully functional piece of tableware.

Wenn der Pilz zum Gefäß wird 🍄🥣

"FUNGEN", ein Begriff aus "Fungus" und "Generation", beschreibt nicht nur das Objekt selbst, sondern eine ganze neue Getränkekultur. Die Porzellantasse ist dafür gedacht, ein pilzbasiertes Aperitif-Getränk zu servieren, das Antworten auf eine Welt im Jahr 2101 gibt. In Seyoung Chons Vision sind Tee und Kaffee keine alltäglichen Genussmittel mehr, sondern eine rare Ressource. Aufgrund des Klimawandels wird aus der Tasse ein kostbares Ritual, und die Objekte darauf werden zu Überresten einer vergangenen Welt. Die Form des Services erinnert an Pilze und Mineralien und steht für die Idee, dass Fungi vielleicht den Weg in eine neue Zukunft weisen können. Nachhaltigkeit wird in dieser Zukunft zum Luxus, und was auf dem Tisch steht, erzählt vom Überleben.

When the mushroom becomes the cup 🍄🥣

"FUNGEN," a term derived from fungus and generation, describes not just the object itself but an entirely new drinking culture. The porcelain cup is designed to serve a mushroom-based aperitif, offering an answer to a world in the year 2101. In Seyoung Chon’s vision, tea and coffee are no longer everyday pleasures but a scarce resource. Climate change transforms the cup into a precious ritual, and the objects on the table become relics of a vanished world. The shape of the tableware is inspired by mushrooms and minerals and embodies the idea that fungi may well show the way toward a new future. In this future, sustainability becomes a luxury, and what sits on the table tells the story of survival.

Jetzt eröffnet: „2101 – Future Ceramics. Tischkultur der Zukunft“ 🍽

Wie werden die Menschen in Zukunft leben? Und wie werden sie essen und trinken, welche alltäglichen Rituale der Tischkultur könnten sich im Jahr 2101 entwickeln? Mit diesen Fragen haben sich Studierende der Universität der Künste (UdK) im Rahmen des Seminars „2101 – FUTURE CERAMICS | Tischkultur der Zukunft“ intensiv beschäftigt. 12 spekulative Szenarien sind jetzt im KGM zu sehen.

Die Ausstellung läuft bis zum 28. Februar 2027.

Now on view: „2101 – Future Ceramics. Dining Culture of the Future“ 🍽

How will people live in the future? How will they eat and drink, and what forms of everyday dining culture might have emerged by the year 2101? Students at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) delved into these questions as part of the seminar 2101 – FUTURE CERAMICS | Dining Culture of the Future. 12 speculative scenarios are now on display at KGM.

The exhibition runs until 28 February 2027.

Willkommen in der Ausstellung „Many Shades of Grès. Mode wird Kunst“ im Kulturforum Berlin.✨

Madame Grès (1903-1993) zum ersten Mal in Berlin: Das Kunstgewerbemuseum zeigt die ikonischen Entwürfe der franzözischen Couturière erstmalig im deutschsprachigen Raum und macht erfahrbar, warum ihre Mode bis heute fasziniert. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Fachbereich School of Culture and Design () der HTW Berlin () treffen feinste Drapierungen, inspiriert von der Antike, auf neue Perspektiven auf Grès und ihr Werk aus studentischen Arbeiten. Eine Ausstellung über Stoff, Form und zeitlose Eleganz.

Madame Grès (1903–1993) in Berlin for the first time: the Kunstgewerbemuseum is showcasing the French couturier’s iconic designs for the first time in the German-speaking world, allowing visitors to experience first-hand why her fashion continues to fascinate to this day. In collaboration with the School of Culture and Design at HTW Berlin, exquisite drapery inspired by antiquity meets fresh perspectives on Grès and her work, as seen through student projects. An exhibition about fabric, form and timeless elegance.

Nur noch bis Donnerstag, den 25. Juni ist die Wanderausstellung „Thinking Ahead“ vom Bundespreis Ecodesign im KGM zu sehen. Präsentiert werden 30 preisgekrönte Projekten die mit dem Bundespreis Ecodesign, der höchsten staatlichen Auszeichnung für ökologisches Design in Deutschland, geehrt wurden.
