One of the many highlights of the exhibition “Picasso–Klee–Matisse: Masterpieces from the Museum Berggruen” is an entire room dedicated to the work of Paul Klee. It is the most substantial presentations of the artist’s work in Houston in the last 30 years. 🖼️

The exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is on view through September 13. Make sure to check it out!

Over the coming weeks, we are excited to share more impressions from our current exhibition “Picasso–Klee–Matisse: Masterpieces from the Museum Berggruen” at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.
Walking into the exhibition, visitors are greeted by Pablo Picasso’s “Woman Reading”. On the reverse of the same partition, Georges Braque’s “Fishing Boats” from the MFAH collection opens the still lifes section. Positioned back-to-back, these two works set the tone for the exhibition’s larger ambition: bringing the distinguished collections of Museum Berggruen and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston into dialogue.

A look inside “Picasso–Klee–Matisse: Masterpieces from the Museum Berggruen” at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. ✨ On view are major works by Pablo Picasso and Paul Klee, alongside Henri Matisse’s signature cut-outs, Alberto Giacometti’s elongated sculptures, and paintings and drawings by Paul Cézanne and Georges Braque. The presentation moves between portraits, still lifes, landscapes and the human figure, placing the collection of the Museum Berggruen in dialogue with works from the MFAH. 👨🏼‍🎨

This marks the U.S. debut of this selection from the Museum Berggruen and brings a remarkable chapter of European modernism to Houston. The exhibition is on view through September 13, 2026 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston – don’t miss out!

We are currently celebrating the US debut of our collection tour and what better place to begin than where it all started? 🎨

In this photograph, we see a young Heinz Berggruen, freshly arrived in the United States. He came to San Francisco on a scholarship, studied there, and soon found his way into the city’s cultural life: writing art criticism for the Chronicle and working at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, he spent hours in front of the European modernists including Klee and Matisse.

His very first purchase, a small Paul Klee watercolour bought for 100 dollars, marked the beginning of his collection. That first Klee now belongs to the Met, together with 89 others he later gifted to the museum.
Today, works from Museum Berggruen are on view in Houston, Texas. What a full circle moment! 🎨

In the summer of 1920, Henri Matisse spent time in Étretat in France, a small fishing village that had drawn Courbet and Monet before him. Under the overcast northern sky, he swapped the vivid warmth of his Nice palette for something quieter and more contemplative: the light, cool and diffuse, makes the room, the beach and the sea all part of the same luminous whole. 🐚

Would you step into Matisses painting and spend a holiday in Étretat? 🌊

143 years ago today, Georges Braque was born in Argenteuil, France. Alongside Pablo Picasso in the ateliers of Paris, Braque was one of the driving forces behind one of the most radical movements in art history: Cubism. His still lifes of guitars, pipes and newspapers became laboratories for a new visual language, breaking forms and multiplying perspectives all at once. What a great artist to be part of our collection – happy birthday!🥳
