Anders Kjellesvik – Breaking Rules Together (trailer)

Breaking rules together! A trailer video on the solo exhibition with Anders Kjellesvik at the gallery.

The exhibition has been inspired by the notion of the “emergency room,” a spatial and metaphorical concept that has emerged in light of the global ecological crisis. The term conjures up artistic responses to climate change, which have included speculative futures, apocalyptic dread, or survivalist imaginings, to name a few. “Breaking rules together” captures much of this polyvalent anxiety through paintings that project a feeling of enclosure, islands, or uncanny retreats. Within the image plane, many constructed dualisms blur such as the natural world vs. the contrived, built space of the interior. Instead, the paintings often contain scenes where both exterior and interior meld, creating an artificial mix that tips into the realm of science fiction. (...)"

We were very pleased with this article in Tagesspiegel a few weeks ago, "Little stitches" about Jana Cordenier's solo exhibition at the gallery. If you didn't see it yet, or want to see it again, "Paradise" is still on view until the 29th of February!

Kleine Nadelstiche

We are very pleased with the article on Jana Cordenier's solo exhibition at the gallery, published in Der Tagesspiegel last Saturday, written by Jens Müller.

To read to full article in German, click the link below.

The exhibition is still on view until 29 February 2020.

On Aiko Tezuka's solo exhibition at the gallery:

Thank you, gallerytalk.net! 🎉

Tomorrow we organize an artist talk with Aiko Tezuka: Artist talk – Aiko Tezuka . Pass by to learn more.

---------------------------------------------------------

Galerie Michael Janssen is pleased to present Aiko Tezuka’s new exhibition “Dear Oblivion – 親愛なる忘却へ” curated by Sachiko Shoji of the Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan. Organized on the occasion of Berlin Art Week 2019, “Dear Oblivion” is the artist’s second solo exhibition in the gallery’s space, and it features works created in collaboration with the Textile Lab at Textile Museum in Tilburg (the Netherlands), the Kyoto Costume Institute (KCI), Kawashima Selkon Textiles and Kyoritsu Women‘s University Museum.

Tezuka’s creative practice, though grounded in painting, has long found expression in intricate fabric installations and objects that explore themes related to the culture, industry, and history of the global textile enterprise. Processes of weaving and unweaving function to characterize both the artist‘s trademark aesthetic and her particular thematic preoccupations; as she articulates in her artist’s statement, she is “interested in loosening up such readymade narratives to unravel forgotten histories or discover new plotlines,” and in so doing “facilitate the reexamination of the subjective nature of time and the process of metamorphosis.” In “Dear Oblivion,” Tezuka further explores these ideas with a critical emphasis on the deconstruction, reexamination, and reconstruction of the relationships between past and present, Japan and Western Europe, and art and craft. (...)

(...) Concurrent to “Dear Oblivion – 親愛なる忘却へ” at Galerie Michael Janssen, Tezuka is presenting a near parallel exhibition titled “Dear Oblivion,” at Spiral, an arts and culture center in Tokyo. Although the project is the same, its Tokyo iteration further elaborates Tezuka’s conceptual investigations of East and West, as geographic circumstances and cultural context inevitably change the public’s understanding of the work. When in Berlin, go see Ho Tzu Nyen’s ‘No Man II’ at the annual Atonal Festival at Kraftwerk! The reknown electronic music festival started yesterday and goes until Sunday. We showed the installation at the gallery in 2017 and are very pleased that Berlin Atonal decided to showcase this specific art work by Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen. For more information on the festival, see their website https://berlin-atonal.com/.

'No Man II' is a single-channelled multimedia installation. The film is projected on a two-way mirror glass, drawing the spectator into the designed world. The world brings together 50 different figures, all digitally created from online sources, that have a profound connection to popular cultural imagination. A ghostly choir assembles in a mirror – an unruly gathering of figures of uncertain origin. They range from animals to human-animal hybrids, cyborgs and anatomical figures; some of which are manifestations of mythical archetypes, while others are cultural stereotypes.

Yesterday Michael Baldwin and Mel Ramsden from Art & Language have signed and stamped the edition ‘107.4% Abstract’ from their sketchbook ‘Drawings from the Winter of 2013 - 2014’ on the occasion of Draw Art Fair 2019. The size of the edition is A3 (29,7 x 42,0 cm) and there are only 100 pieces available. Please contact the gallery for the special subscription price.
We also invite everyone to join the artist talk with Art & Language hosted tomorrow at 12:30 pm, Saatchi Gallery London! ‘Art & Language work on the edges of drawing, painting, text, music, objects - in an unstable yet patently ethical landscape of words, ideas, images, forms. Compiling 147 images culled from their own drawings used in works dating back several decades or some fresh as a daisy now - on a winter’s day - should be seen as nothing less than the accumulation of alphabetical signs, or a topological map of their interests and concerns.’ (Jill Silvermann van Coenegrachts, curator)
