Next to our last artist highlight this year:

The chinese artist Yafeng Duan (b.1973) currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

Duan constructs her paintings from color surfaces, layering them in semi-transparent layers in such a way that boundaries are sometimes accentuated and sometimes merge into one another. The surfaces, in turn, receive their tension and mentality through individual material differences in texture; they can be jagged like mountains, hilly like a gentle landscape, or smooth like the surface of a lake when the wind is still. Duan‘s observations of nature become an abstract play of associations on the canvas as stored experiences and perceptions.

This year has been an eventful year for Duan. Her works have been presented by us at six different international art fairs: , , .artfair .bordeaux, .
Furthermore, Duan also had a solo exhibition: “New Pictures” at Private Gallery, Berlin.

During the Chinese New Year(春节), we will exhibit a solo show January 28, 2023 — March 18, 2023. Please SAVE THE DATE for Opening: 27. January, 2023. More Info see bio.

🎉Our next artist highlight is 🎊

Gulnur Mukazhanova (b.1984) is a Kazakh artist who lives and works in Berlin. Her work is influenced by Kazakh textile traditions, with felt as her most important material. She addresses identity problems and the transformations of traditional values of her culture in the age of globalization. In her art, she processes her origins and the actual state of society there with an international perspective.

We have presented Mukazhanova’s works at this years , and art fairs!

Moreover, she also had a solo exhibition “Öliara :The Dark Moon”at x Ainalaiyn Space, London, Uk.
Öliara, As the moon is hardly noticeable during the dark moon period, Kazakhs used to associate moonless sky with a dead moment. Mukazhanova thematizes th state of collective mourning in response to global pandemic and military conflicts.

During , Gulnur Mukazhanova was invited by and to give a collective workshop on the production of a syrmak, a traditional Central Asian stitched felt carpet.

“I consciously transform the technique of making of traditional syrmak, as it is part of idea of reconstruction or reinterpretation... I invite the audience to observe, feel and, if they will, participate in the process of my open performance.“ said the artist.

During her residency in Hongkong the artist visited the local markets discovering new fabrics which she cut and reassembled into an entirely new work incorporating traditional Chinese ornaments. The result will be presented in an upcoming exhibition and we are looking forward to it!

2022 is an eventful year for Nyen. He took part in Hammer Projects at Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, USA; Group exhibition “Ghosts of the Machine” at The Polygon Gallery, North Vancouver, Canada; Group exhibition “Nation, Narration, Narcosis Collecting Entanglements and Embodied Histories” at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, GER; Group exhibition “Safe House” at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, Italy; A new AR work “language” was shown outside the National Gallery Singapore, Singapore.

Our next highlight is an emerging Belgian artist Jana Cordenier! 🎨🤍🪴

Jana Cordenier grasps and documents the momentary, experiencing her surroundings in an intimate way —being immersed in them. The gentle play of her ephemeral strokes and marks is a result of Cordenier’s collaboration with nature. The artist creates her unique landscapes by spreading out the canvas on the pebbly surface of the ground and highlighting the outlines left by the plants and stones underneath. Her delicate, luminous works illustrate a moment caught in time.

We presented her sensational work at Art Brussels 2022!

Next for our 2022 recap we have Stijn Ank! 😍🎨

.ank lives and works between his main studios in Brussels, Rome and Berlin.

For Paris+ par Art Basel Stijn Ank presented the sculpture a ‘Phoenix’. Which was made of white plaster and brilliant pigments, embodying the regenerative power of a mythical bird, which arises from its ashes.

A few weeks later, the Phoenix was reincarnated! For Luxembourg art Week we saw another one of Ank’s sculptures, which is a relentless attempt to construct answers to what drives us. The Phoenix is a dynamic subject. It is not finished. It is ever in construction and at the same time in decay. It evolves, decomposes, and rises again.

Earlier this year, Stijn also presented at art brussels!

Our next artist highlight is !🗓🎊
Monique van Genderen (1965, Vancouver) is a Los Angeles based painter with whom we have been working since early 2000s. 🖌️

For her third exhibition at our gallery in April 2022 the artist revisited her previous exhibition at Susanne Vielmetter “Afterimages”. A symbolic adjustment in the exhibition title —from Afterimages to After Images — indicates a compositional change.

Retrofitting the painting to the new space of the Michael Janssen Gallery, the artist cut her large scale painting A Side into several pieces, folding the ideas of panopticons and the afterimage into a singular experience.

We have presented Monique’s works at this years Art Brussels and Nada New York art fairs! She also had a solo exhibition at Bernier Eliades in Brussels, Belgium and a solo exhibition at Miles McEnery Gallery in New York, USA.

🎉 As the end of the year approaches, we are excited to share the 2022 highlights of our gallery and its represented artists! 🎊

We kicked off 2022 with a solo exhibition of , a new artist at our gallery. He is a Berlin based artist largely influenced by his African American heritage.

The artist presented two series of works “Collage Paintings “and “Last Words”. “Last Words” is a series of poster installations quoting the “last words” of Black people in the United States unjustly killed by police and others. “Collage paintings” are a recollection of surfaces and textures of Berlin city assemble into collages. The patterns of the collages are inspired by African American, or Improvisational, quilts—specifically those of the women of Gee’s Bend.

Cameron also took part in the group exhibition “Summer od possibilities” curated by Alteronce Gumby at and we presented his works at and .

Finally we are excited to share a glimpse into from Cameron’s newest series of works “Strip Paintings” made of by products of previous works, bands of canvas, painted and pasted on stretched canvas. These paintings mark a departure from previous works in that the color is painted, not found and printed.

Look forward for more work next year!

📍 Come find us at BOOTH R02
🗓 October 20-23, 2022

We are very excited to be presenting three Asian artists!

(Indonesia) works draw upon emotional freedom through a cathartic effect method and evaluate humanatizing psychological and philosophical studies. He expresses and translates reality into paintings using a rich visual language. (Slide 1)

‘s (Kasachstan) works explore how felt and collage can become a conduit to subvert ancient post-nomadic practices and visuals that remain in circulation likewise to meditate on cultures in flux through employing the language of abstraction. (Slide 2,3)

(China) constructs her paintings from color surfaces, layering them in semi-transparent layers in such a way that boundaries are sometimes accentuated and sometimes merge into one another. Her observations of nature become an abstract play of associations on the canvas as stored experiences and perceptions. (Slide 4,5)

We are pleased to introduce our three talented Asian artists!

(China) finds connection to traditional chinese painting through an intense relationship with nature in her works, at the same time though she uses European techniques to give her paintings a haptic quality and physical presence.

’s (Kasachstan) work is influenced by Kazakh textile traditions, with felt as her most important material.

(Indonesia), heavily inspired by his surrounding environment, expresses and translates reality into paintings using a rich visual language.

📣 Our artist will be shown at Next week!

Gulnur Mukazhanova (1984) was born in Semipalatinsk, Kazakhstan, shortly before the end of the USSR.
She finished her studies at the Art Academy in Almaty and the Kunsthochschule in Berlin Weißensee. Still living in Berlin, she has been working for years mainly with textiles.
Her work is influenced by Kazakh textile traditions, with felt as her most important material. She addresses identity problems and the transformations of traditional values of her culture in the age of globalisation. In her art, she processes her Kazakh origins and the actual state of society there with an international perspective.
As she said:
“My works are a reflection of our kazakh society. They try to critically illuminate the tensions between the individual, the post nomadic developed identity, and the alienation through the global information- and media society.“

Opening: 30.09. 7 pm.

War is the father of all media, and the scene of vicious crimes committed by human beings against one another. The violence of war occurs everywhere, both on the battlefield and in visual culture.

Margret Eicher provides us with an image repertoire from both present-day pop culture and art history, seduces us into a nostalgic study of the media and overlays it with science’s critique of the media: “Strategies and forms of warfare are changing radically as a result of digitization. […] World events are becoming unpredictable.”

Entitled Battle:Reloaded, her latest contribution is a 30-meter-long tapestry, made in a continuous digital work process from the compositional collage of the motif to production on state-of-the-art Jacquard looms at a Belgian weaving mill.

YONAMINE - PARLA_MUTE
16 September—12 November 2022

"The title of the show - PARLA_MUTE - is the name of a pathology: a parliament without a voice. PARLA_MUTE has always existed in my subconscious, perhaps because I have lived in a country whose regime is authoritarian and militarised, where you are not allowed to think or have your own opinions. PARLA_MUTE is a kind of cultural asphyxia in search of intellectual oxygen, filled with chaos and hope." (YONAMINE, August 2022)

For PARLA_MUTE, his first solo exhibition at michael janssen berlin, (1975 in luanda) presents a series of posters, silkscreens and large scale collages. the newly created works are made from a number of phrases and graphic material picked up, once more, literally from the streets and transformed incessantly through the remix and culminating in a total work of art that incorporates the entire interior and exterior gallery space.

.ank Dujourie,

For the Art Brussels 2022, Michael Janssen Berlin united nine artists, whose artistic experimentations actively engage with the idea of ephemerality in art and life. Inspired by nature, urban patterns, digital imaginary, ancestral embroidery techniques, traditional oriental painting and possibilities of abstractions, the artists have created the kaleidoscope of enigmatic landscapes, which seek to capture the fragility of the moment.

BEHIND THE SCENES: BERLIN

gallery weekend/ Part I⠀
11,12 September, 2020⠀

Everything takes longer now, including the decision to fly to Berlin after so many months staying home. Last year spent real time there with our collaborative Art & Language exhibition at Galerie Michael Janssen ; I missed my friends, artists and colleagues. It seemed a moment to celebrate the last project MJ would mount in this great storefront gallery I love. They just now moved to offices down the block until a new gallery space is found.⠀

Super fresh painting. Till Gerhard , “We’re all like Mirrors”, dreamy and exciting surprises galore. Not the kind I usually embrace, but suddenly, in this time, having spent months looking at art only in my library and on my laptop, the sheer delight of his unique convergences, color and narrative, wicked and magical at the same time; partially recognizable scenes, photo albums from long ago family outings, or odd Scandi Noir television moments. His taut ambivalence between innocence and destruction drives their pictorial nature into something compelling.⠀

Acid colors, transparent veils over quasi-photographic imagery either come in or out of focus. Sometimes the subjects are directly in your line of vision, walking at you, staring at us blindly. What are they doing? Something unsettles the eye and sets it deep into the foreground looking for clues.⠀

Groups of children, or adults caught in another reality where something has just happened or is about to. His night scenes of lovers in a lake hover under psychedelic skies. Washes of color across Gerhard’s work are high voltage and filmic. His subjects dissolve in and out of focus; painterly prisons of layered color like camouflage keep us from getting too near what is going on. But he makes me want to see, keeping my eye fixed on this unsettled territory. Idiosyncratic voyeurism couched in radical painting. Keep looking.⠀
