For the Independent 20th Century in New York, Michael Janssen presents the works of German painter Klaus Liebig that reflect two crucial decades of his artistic trajectory — the 1970s and 1990s. Liebig, whose works are part of the MoMA collection, remains relatively unknown to the international art community. European audiences may recognize his paintings from the successful group show titled "Let's Mix All Feelings Together," which took place at major museums in Europe, including the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Louisiana Museum at Humlebæk in Denmark, during the late 1970s.

We’re excited to remind you that Yonamine is part of the Kaunas biennial.

In the last few months he has been working to finish his project for the biennial. We are happy to give you another preview of his project and can’t wait to see it at the biennial.

“The 14th Kaunas Biennial (Kaunas, Lithuania) and Contemporary Art Festival Survival Kit 14 (Riga, Latvia) announce Alicia Knock and Inga Lāce as the co-curators of Long-distance Friendships. A programme of events driven by shared research, friendship, and exchange of ideas, will activate decolonial perspectives and aesthetics across both sites, in each country. Through the overlooked lens of personal exchange and relationships drawn from transnational research paths, the collaboration will engage in the history of emancipatory struggles that connected Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and certain countries in Africa. The Soviet Union and other Socialist bloc countries played an important role in the processes of decolonisation in Africa from economic, infrastructural and military support, to education and cultural exchanges driven to expand influence and promote socialism globally. Ideologically driven, those exchanges nevertheless offered personal, often transformative experiences to the community of students, artists or workers involved. Departing from these past exchanges that were used by the Soviet ideology to strengthen its influence in the world, Knock and Lāce propose alternative perspectives for the future. As the seemingly forgotten, yet so present, the traumatic past of the region is looming back in the daily lives of Eastern European societies with the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, the curators ask: in a time of geopolitical fragmentation, can international alliances be forged and nurtured based on friendship and solidarity rather than power and market dynamics?” — Kaunas Biennial

We are excited to annonce our participation in the Independent 20th Century! We will be featuring late german artist Klaus Liebig’s works! 💙🖌️

Liebig started off creating figurative paintings with abstract qualities inspired by cubism. Eventually, he developed his own unique representational style, moving away from Cubist influences.

Liebig's creative process was marked by his meticulous gathering and organization of a vast collection of information, texts, and reproductions into around 200 folders. This extensive pool of information served as a source of creative inspiration for his works. He was also part of the groundbreaking group show titled "Let's Mix All Feelings Together,” along with artists Erró, Fahlström, and Baruchello. Today his thought-provoking themes and art continue to garner critical acclaim, ensuring his legacy in the contemporary art world.

Come check out our booth to see some of these works and more in person!

Don’t miss solo exhibition “Öliara: The Dark Moon” at .berlin 🌌✨

The exhibition still runs until 28th of July, so if you’re in town, come visit!

Gulnur Mukazhanovas work is influenced by Kazakh textile traditions, with felt as her most important material. She addresses identity problems and the transformations of traditional values of her culture in the age of globalization. In her art, she processes her Kazakh origins and the actual state of society there with an international perspective.

works in an interdisciplinary approach, within material-based explorations in painting, printmaking and sculpture, as well as social, temporary and performative projects. Utopian ideas, alienation, taboos and existential questions are recurring themes. The works are site-specific and rooted in the place and the situation, in history and the present. In this way, he wants to question social norms and rules. The visual language is constantly changing and complex, from the poetic and humorous to the dystopian.

We are excited to announce our amazing artists Gulnur’s new exhibition - Öliara: Dark Moon in SOMA Berlin! Today came by to pick up two of her works (pictured), which were previously part of our “LETS MIX!” (Part 1) exhibition, for the new exhibition!

Born in Kazakhstan, Mukazhanova explores the Kazakh concept of Oliara (literally "dead in between") or "dark moon". The artist uses Oliara as both a metaphor for the collective trauma inflicted on the Kazakh population during Soviet and Russian oppression, and for the recent violent outbreaks of Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine and bloody January in Kazakhstan in 2022. With her imposing, colourful works composed of smaller textile fragments held together only with pins, Mukazhanova evokes the grief and uncertainty that accompany the abrupt disruptions of once-stable lifestyles and cultures.

You work with contemporary media, such as print, internet, film, and popular culture. What is your common thread in an ever-changing zeitgeist?

The common threads are the themes themselves which I depict over and over in my tapestries. They can always be found in media, albeit in modification. For example, the image of a social event, the hero or heroine, these are religious motifs. My motifs are rather pseudo-religious! My female figures, for example, often have a religious appeal and their iconographic origin is often in virgin Mary depictions, without being a depiction of Mary. There's the theme of gender roles, which often connects to the hero representation as well. Many of my figures are portrayed like heroes, they are heroized. The whole range of themes of courtly tapestry is still of great importance today, speaking in a figurative way. I look at these themes through the contemporary eye of a contemporary world.
