Window Project 1.13 | Giuliana Kiersz | spaces with words, words for fantasies | 16-31.10.2021

𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙨, 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙛𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙨𝙞𝙚𝙨 is an exhibition around the project encuentros de escritura - writing gatherings (2017 - ongoing). The writing gatherings are sensitive and political spaces where to reflect collectively on the territories we inhabit to create new narrative structures for the society we want to live in. By investigating our relationship with language, we intend to expand the dimensions of words so as to perceive beyond our ideas of what exists. We practice writing as a form of allowing sensitive knowledge to arise from listening, collecting and thinking together.

𝙬𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙜𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 During the exhibition there will be two writing gatherings on site: on the 16th and 23rd of October from 15 to 18h. We will work in groups taking approaches from other disciplines such as cartographies, drawings and listening. We will practice collaborative thinking through questions and poems. Each writing gathering works as a unit, attending both days is not mandatory. No previous experience is required and each participant is invited to write in the language in which they feel most comfortable with. Come and join us!

To register the writing gatherings, please kindly send us an email ([email protected]) or DM via Instagram.

Exhibition: Window Project 1.4: Nomin Zezegmaa – Ripped out Tongues and Spheres of Forced Forgetting
30.04–09.05.2021 | Outdoor Exhibition | Open 24/7

Beginning September, 2020, Southern Mongolians are threatened with cultural genocide following the Chinese Central Government’s aggressive policy of wiping out Mongolian-language eduction.

The scope of the campaign has extended far beyond converting the medium of instruction from Mongolian to Chinese. Government mouthpieces, including the Inner Mongolia Radio and Television Station, have been ordered to replace Mongolian content with Chinese cultural programs in order to promote a ‘strong sense of Chinese nationality common identity.’ One of the campaign’s official slogans, ‘Learn Chinese and become a civilized person,’ has been used to publicly promote Chinese supremacy over the Mongolian language, culture, and identity. In schools, Mongolian students are subjected to military training and propagandist activities. Mongolian college students are forced to wear Mao-style uniforms and sing communist “red” songs to extol the greatness of China.*

Reacting to the current human rights crisis and the pain of disconnecting from one’s mother tongue, the fourth edition of the Window Project will represent Nomin Zezegmaa’s Ripped out Tongues and Spheres of Forced Forgetting from 30.04–09.05.2021 at Prenzlauer Studio.
Zezegmaa’s three-layered, site specific work has a painful focus on involuntarily disconnectedness and (non)relationality to collective heritage: Mongol bichig, the classical writing system and language of ethnic groups of the Greater Mongolian Nation. Ripped out Tongues and Spheres of Forced Forgetting investigates and gives account to the political, territorial struggles and suppression form intergenerational tragic realities, nevertheless imbued with resilience and a reconstruction of collective histories, tongues, and narratives.

About the Artist
Nomin Zezegmaa is a Berlin-based artist, designer, researcher and writer of Mongolian heritage. Mongol shamanism, its history, violent suppression during Stalin’s Great Terror, and its direct link to the late twentieth century diasporic movement of Mongolians, are pivotal themes in her current research trajectory with a focus on collective history-making through the condensation of singular, individual lived, experienced, and embodied accounts of diasporic movements. Zezegmaa’s often sculptural and tactile works find fluid expression in an amorphous multiplicity of medium and material, where applied and unapplied arts meet on equal ground — with the urgency to blur and diffuse the rigid borders and boundaries between art, design, crafts and histories.

Window Project 1.3 Space Between (Exhibition on the Line) 16-25.4.2021

Space Between (Exhibition on the Line)
16-25.4.2021

Last Friday opened the third edition of the Window Project with Lucie Jestřabíková, now on view at Prenzlauer Studio. Space Between (Exhibition on the Line) is based on Jestřabíková’s memories of childhood toys, which she remembers not as passive objects but encompassing multiple possibilities of stories, worlds, and environments through interaction and imagination. The here presented objects invite us to enter these fantastic worlds: to move through the tunnel and to embody new positions in unknown environments.

We welcome you to come by the studio to take a peek through the windows and into the tunnel – let your imagination run free and crawl in the spaces between. But mind our COVID-19 regulations: This is a window exhibition, taking place outdoors. Visitors do not need to register, but are required to keep a distance of each other of at least 1.5 meters. We ask you to be mindful of each other, wear a mask, and to refrain from touching the windows.

Our Story
