heat, time, minerals, patience, luck
dimensions variable

“While we are alive and even when we die
Minerals stay part of our real and virtual worlds
Even space sprinkles her minerals on earth
We are because of them
Like I learned from Carl Sagan.

I collect them in my daily life
Mostly from nature but also some man-made minerals
Connecting our emotions, locations, visions, history, and so much more...
They go in jars, 200 I have collected now and counting still
Like I learned from Roald Dahl's the BFG.

Then the arrangement begins
My hand moves between the jars and starts selecting the minerals
When the selection is final I start crushing and grinding them into tiny pieces
To prepare them for an extensive dialogue beyond their limits
Like I learned from David Bohm.

Meanwhile the clay body is waiting for the minerals...
But first I have to get the clay in the right mood: becoming soft, eager and wet
Now it's ready to receive the crushed minerals on its skin
Gently pushing and pulling its intimate pressure points until we are one
Like I learned from Demi Moore in Ghost.

After a few days they are dry and brittle, hungry for heat, time and luck
I imagine what kind of heat like electric, gas, oil, or wood, might work well
Within just the right amount of time given
Understanding time through the eyes of heat while still feeling lucky is key
Like I learned from Carlo Rovelli.

When the vessel is done I need to provide it with cryptic tokens
So it can build a patina of meaning
While passing through the signs of our time
Charging its faith beyond merely being a vessel in this life
Like I learned from the High Council in Star Wars.

Only after I have placed the correct tokens in the right order
In front of the vessel this enables to unlock my heart
And I start to whisper in front of it:
"I love you, I love you, I love you; what's your name?"
Like I learned from Kim Gordon.

Then it's done and I can move on.“ (Navid Nuur)

„what's there to be seen?
what's there to be scraped away?
In a mirror it's not clear nor clean
I scrape the silver, opening up dimensions
Which then can evoke public suspension
Thank you glass cart for making this happen
It only misses you with or without covid
Let's play this thing called dialogue
The work is waiting“

We are pleased to announce the representation of Israel Hershberg.

"ISRAEL HERSHBERG paints - 'from life', as the delicate negotiation between observed appearances and the layer of paint on a canvas is usually characterized. What makes his work so intriguing, so mysterious? Is it the plastic power of his realism that provokes in us this strong desire to understand his paintings? (...)

Hershberg is engaged with what is, to all intents and purposes, permanent and absolute. His preoccupation with permanence means that there is a dry, preserved quality to the subjects he chooses at times to depict, objects emptied of the life they once possessed and retaining only their outer skin. Like the stone counter-top that features as a base in some of his paintings, they are locked in place in a kind of petrified parallel universe that knows neither time nor travel. A world containing the remains of temporality without decay (I almost said, without life). A world which could, ostensibly, remain in that state forever, embalmed by the very act of painting.

Yet Hershberg paints something permanent in order to reveal what is actually transient. The entities he depicts are containers; he focuses on the poetics of their outer surface, the covering, the pod.“ (Excerpt from text by Yigal Zalmona, Chief Curator of the Arts, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem)

Israel Hershberg was born on November 7, 1948 in a Displaced Persons camp in Linz, Austria. He lives and works in Jerusalem, Israel. During the late 1960s and early 1970s he became active in a breakaway figurative resurgence among a younger generation of artists based in New York City and also studied at the Brooklyn Museum School and Pratt Institute. The artist is the Founder and former Artistic Director of the Jerusalem Studio School. His work is included in international private and public collections.

Israel Hershberg was Victor Man’s professor of painting at the Jerusalem Studio School. We are grateful to the artist Victor Man for introducing us to Hershberg and his work.

The works of Achraf Touloub in the exhibition "Antibodies" at Palais de Tokyo in Paris reviewed by Tomas Weber for Artforum

"Achraf Touloub’s ink and acrylic line drawings are filled with meticulously repetitive patterns, overlaid with large swollen forms. At the top of the remarkably prophetic National Materials, 2019, is what looks like a coronavirus, spike proteins and all. Touloub’s lines construct habitats, not boundaries, and the highly wrought patterning of his work draws the viewer in."
