On transnational solidarity, intersectional justice and socially engaged arts.

A few weeks ago, as ruangrupa celebrates its 25th anniversary in Indonesia, we were honoured to be there, engaging with extraordinary artists, curators and activists who continue to amplify alternative, ancestral and beautifully ordinary narratives of everyday people.

We feel lucky to have experienced the curatorial brilliance of ruangrupa's edition of Germany's documenta fifteen back in 2022.

What followed was Germany's orchestrated censorship, repression, cancellations and smear campaigns against ruangrupa and its allied artists, it was neither its first nor its last shameful attempt to undermine artistic freedom.

It was refreshing to snap out Germany's repressive climate and dive into listening, learning and connecting, from witnessing the last days of Biennale Yogyakarta 18, to holding talks at Taring Padi, and reconnecting with ruangrupa, gudskul and other empowering community spaces.

We are incredibly grateful to have made these meaningful connections and to have found inspiration in ways that can sustain transnational solidarity and intersectional alliances. Special thanks and deepest gratitude to everyone who made this possible.

Yesterday, we received a note to all of us from Louna, who is still illegally detained at Ktzi'ot prison after having been kidnapped in international waters by Israeli forces.

In her note she tells us about the physical assault and threats from the moment they were brought to port, the inhumane conditions of over 50 activists being crammed into mere 24 square meters, about being woken in the middle of the night, being forced to watch live footage from October 7, of being denied basic rights and being physically attacked for demanding those.

Most importantly she tells us that nothing the activists endure comes even close to what Palestinians go through every single day. Let's listen to her and not be intimidated. We keep our eyes on Gaza, mobilise to end the genocide and create a humanitarian corridor - the next flotilla is already on their way!

We demand the immediate release of all remaining members of the flotilla. Flotilla activists were denied basic necessities like drinking water, access to toilets, sanitary products and medication. Activists including Louna Sbou started a hunger strike while being held. We demand the return of the humanitarian aid supplies, boarts, and continued prison visits to safeguard their rights. We demand daily access to legal aid and consular support for the kidnapped activists and a chance to communicate with the family. The time is now to amplify the flotilla demands, end to genocide, an end to western complicity and a free Paestine.

Show solidarity and take action. Write to your representatives, sign and share the petition. All links in bio. 🔗

“Care is the antidote to violence.” – Saidiya Hartman

Rooted in a practice of collective care and refusal, the Radical Rest Residency is not about productivity. It’s a week-long sanctuary to rest, regenerate, mourn, listen, dream - collectively. In a time of increasing repression, censorship, and systemic violence, we believe in rest as strategy, as resistance, as survival.

Held on the outskirts of Marrakech and facilitated by SWANA Healing (Elu & Rose), this residency is fully funded by Oyoun and includes travel, accommodation, meals, facilitation, and an honorarium of 500€.

We especially invite those affected by censorship or silencing - particularly around Palestine solidarity - to apply.

✿ No production. No performance. Just rest.

✨️ The struggle continues, and so does our work ✨️

Oyoun was birthed as a Berlin-based cultural centre dedicated to decolonial, class-critical, and queer*feminist perspectives.

Following Germany's worrying developments around artistic freedom, state violence, defunding, and undermining democracy, Oyoun continues its mission as a hybrid space dedicated to building transnational solidarity, intersectional justice and socially engaged arts.

Rooted in anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian racism, the current political climate has far-reaching consequences, from censorship of the arts, culture, and academia to police brutality and increasingly repressive migration policies.

How can we further establish artistic, social, and cultural alliances, collectively build networks of care, resilience, and resistance? How do we nourish, cultivate, and empower marginalised communities and ecosystems of relational aesthetics? How do we raise funds, curate, and navigate architectures of survival in an increasingly hostile environment?

We are grateful to be invited to share our stories and are open to collaborating:

Speaking of the German media: We have just received a press enquiry from a leading daily newspaper.

How serious investigative journalism does not work: questions that contain more prejudgements than thorough research.

"Ladies and gentlemen,

we have the following questions for a report in ### (German daily newspaper):

1. what makes you decide to offer a stage on Friday to Ramsis Kilani, of all people, who has repeatedly attracted attention in the past by glorifying violence, glorifying terrorist groups, hating Israel and making anti-Semitic statements?

2. will you tolerate it if Kilani again attracts attention on Friday by glorifying violence, glorifying terrorist groups, hating Israel and making anti-Semitic statements?

3. how do you deal with the fact that Oyoun is now considered to be largely isolated both in Berlin's left-wing scene and in Berlin's art scene?

4. why haven't you moved out of the premises yet?

4. will you be giving up the premises at the end of the year?

5. are you planning to provoke an eviction?

6. do you hope that this eviction will allow you to present yourself as a victim once again?

7. how much have you cost the taxpayer this year?

We need the answers by 3 pm on Wednesday.

Yours sincerely"

"The symbolic “Kufiya” (aka “Shemagh” / “Keffiyeh”) garment is more important today than ever. Traditionally worn over the head or shoulders by farmers, the last century has seen a revival of the Kufiya as it became synonymous with the quest for Palestinian freedom and independence.

From the era of the British Empire to the Israeli occupation, the Kufiya has remained a symbol of resistance and sovereignty for the Palestinian people.

Keeping tradition alive, the Hirbawi Kufiya is now the only kufiya still being actively produced in Palestine. Yasser Hirbawi opened his historic factory in 1961.

Each Kufiya headdress is handmade using a specific cross-stitching technique developed over decades. Only a handful of people still know these time-honoured techniques that are honed over many generations.

The Kufiya today is more than just a symbol of Palestinian heritage. Wearing the Kufiya has become an expression of resistance and rebellion against injustices of all kinds. A way to express solidarity with all those whose rights are stolen and whose voices are silenced. A colourful piece of fabric that speaks a thousand words."
