Feuerle Puig House Private museum in Berlin, juxtaposing contemporary artists with Imperial Chinese furniture and ancie

The Feuerle Collection juxtaposes international contemporary artists with Imperial Chinese furniture and ancient Southeast Asian art. Located in a former Second World War telecommunications bunker that has been renovated by the British architect John Pawson, the museum encourages a conversation between different periods and cultures, offering an alternative perception of ancient art and creates a

new perspective on the pieces, adopting a synesthetic approach. On display are stone, bronze and wood Khmer sculptures from the 7th - 13th century, Imperial Chinese lacquer and stone furniture; wood and stone Chinese Scholar furniture from the Han Dynasty to Qing Dynasty, from 200 BC to the 18th century. They are juxtaposed with works by contemporary artists, including Cristina Iglesias, Anish Kapoor, Zeng Fanzhi, James Lee Byars, Nobuyoshi Araki and Adam Fuss.

For Désiré Feuerle, the contrast between Berlin and his collection carries a distinctive elegance. As he explains, “The real contrast is between Berlin and my collection. Most of the things I collect are very refined and elegant, whereas Berlin as a whole certainly comes across as somewhat rougher.” Within this tension lies a constructive energy: the pieces, set against such a backdrop, seem to become even more alive.

His curatorial vision builds on this principle. By combining ancient works — such as imperial Chinese furniture and early Khmer sculpture — with pieces by contemporary artists, Feuerle seeks to dissolve temporal boundaries. As he notes, “The historical objects, just like the new ones, exist in the now of our present. For me, as a viewer and collector, both are ‘contemporary’ in the sense of real, not past objects.”

Through this approach, his exhibitions reveal a simultaneity that allows artworks from different epochs to coexist and enter into dialogue in the present.

Through the Eyes of Our Visitors
Feuerle Puig House leads you from absolute darkness into a space where soft light reveals still, graceful forms — a quiet shift that transforms the senses and heightens awareness.

As one visitor beautifully expressed:
"The moment you shift from complete darkness and John Cage music into the dimly lit realm of meditating and dancing beings…”

Step into this world of quiet contemplation and transformation.

The Incense Ceremony was created by Désiré Feuerle, founder of Feuerle Puig House, as a contemporary yet authentic version of this ancient discipline. Conceived to unfold as an intimate, contemporary performance, our incense ceremony will invite you to enter a new world of sensual meditation and aesthetic eroticism, exploring the dialogue between the incense, the art pieces, the space, the senses, and your emotions. Feuerle Puig House is the first art museum to present the theme of Chinese incense culture and the only place in the world where the incense ceremony is introduced as an artistic practice, part of a curatorial work in dialogue with, and surrounded by, ancient and contemporary art.
