BERLIN PHOTO WEEK: Dancing through Times of Uncertainty, 01.09. - 29.10.2022

Johanna-Maria Fritz is the second photographic position we are delighted to present in Dancing thought Times of Uncertainty. The young photographer inserts herself wherever there is war, discrimination and/ or difficult living conditions: Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Nigeria, Syria and currently Ukraine are just a few of the countries that Fritz has photographed.

In 2017 Fritz was awarded the Inge Morath Award for her series “Like a Bird”, selected works from which will be on view in the exhibition. The project depicts circus culture in Muslim countries. She recorded the artist ́s quest to create a space of freedom for themselves and their audiences.
According to Fritz „The circus is a place free of religion, nationality or skin colour – it is a refuge in times of uncertainty or conflict”.

We look forward to hanging the works on our walls over the next couple of days!

BERLIN PHOTO WEEK: Dancing through Times of Uncertainty, 01.09. - 29.10.2022

Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing some insights with the photographers whose works will be hanging on our walls during Berlin Photo Week. Since this year’s BPW will commemorate Magnum Photos’ 75th Anniversary, we thought it only appropriate to start with Inge Morath (*1923).

Morath was one of the first women to become a full member of Magnum Photos in 1955 and remained associated with the agency for 50 years. The exhibition will bring together some of her iconic to lesser-known works. Insights into her journeys around the world and her humanistic photographic language can be appreciated within the exhibition.

“If you don’t respect what people do, you should not photograph them.” Inge Morath, Interview by Kurt Kaindl, Salzburg, 1992 in “Inge Morath : Iran”, Steidl, 2009

More coming soon!

BERLIN PHOTO WEEK: Sept 2-9 2022

We are thrilled to announce that we will be showcasing two exhibitions for this year's BERLIN PHOTO WEEK!

The first exhibition, Dancing through Times of Uncertainty, presents the works of Inge Morath (1923-2002) and Johanna-Maria Fritz (*1994). The documentary exhibition commemorates Magnum Photos' 75th Anniversary. The second, Updating a Family Album features the works of renowned Iranian photographer Malekeh Nayiny (*1955).

The exhibitions were conceived parallel to one another, making room for dialogue between three generations of female photographers, and their distinctive documentary and artistic practices. Morath and Fritz capture life and people around the world while Nayiny´s works complement their social observations with an intimate insight into her own experiences as a native Iranian.

Stay tuned for more information!

3D EXHIBITION TOUR "Behind Desire - Shadow Self " - Les Rencontres d'Arles 2021

We are delighted to share with you the 3D exhibition tour of our group exhibition Behind Desire - Shadow Self presented last summer at the Foundation Manuel Rivera-Ortiz during Les Rencontres d'Arles 2021, as part of the exhibition Echos Système and by invitation of FOTOHAUS.

Behind Desire - Shadow Self explores the concept of Persona according to Carl Gustav Jung. In search of the Shadow Self, a notion opposed to the Persona, which includes all the facets of the personality repressed or rejected by the Ego, the exhibition reveals the multi-layered faces of Eros.

A bullet piercing a playing card or an apple, a milk drop in the air: these photographic icons of the 1950s continue to fascinate today.

As a professor in Electrical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Harold Edgerton (1903 - 1990) invented modern stroboscopic photography, which utilizes a rapid succession of light flashes in order to capture a quickly moving object.

Our current presentation of the Collection De Gambs, focused on experimental photography, is still open until next week!
