“Gastarbeiter”: An Important Part of German Migration History
The “wildcat” strike from August 24 to 30, 1973, during which the Ford plant in Cologne was occupied, was one of the largest mobilizations of migrants in Germany. These so-called “guest workers,” who had contributed to the German economic miracle and faced discrimination, racism, and poor working conditions, fought for equal rights. Thousands of workers in Cologne fought for wage increases, vacation days, a reduction in piecework, and solidarity among themselves.
This strike highlighted the influence and voice of migrant workers in the workplace and within the labor movement.
Following the screening, there will be a discussion where we can draw parallels to today’s Germany. We will explore questions regarding the rights of migrants and their historical and current contributions to economic, social, and political life.
As always, we look forward to seeing you at 6 p.m. for our solidarity dinner; this time, donations will go to the café itself, which has fallen into financial difficulties due to state repression.
