🎬 Political Movie Night @ Café Collective Herman Schulz

📆 Wednesday 17th of June
🕓 18:00. Soli-Food
📽 19:00 “Wildstreik” Köln 1973

“Gastarbeiter”: An Important Part of German Migration History

The “wildcat” strike from August 24 to 30, 1973, during which the Ford plant in Cologne was occupied, was one of the largest mobilizations of migrants in Germany. These so-called “guest workers,” who had contributed to the German economic miracle and faced discrimination, racism, and poor working conditions, fought for equal rights. Thousands of workers in Cologne fought for wage increases, vacation days, a reduction in piecework, and solidarity among themselves.
This strike highlighted the influence and voice of migrant workers in the workplace and within the labor movement.

Following the screening, there will be a discussion where we can draw parallels to today’s Germany. We will explore questions regarding the rights of migrants and their historical and current contributions to economic, social, and political life.

As always, we look forward to seeing you at 6 p.m. for our solidarity dinner; this time, donations will go to the café itself, which has fallen into financial difficulties due to state repression.

📆 Sunday, 26 April 2026
🥘 from 5.00 pm. Kiez dinner with Lebanese cuisine and live music
🕓 7.00 pm. BUFFER ZONE (Farrah Berrou, 2025) screening and gathering/discussion
In Arabic & English with English subtitles and the discussion in English.

At the Politic Movie Night in April, we would like to support Jeyetna, a Lebanese association that helps displaced women in Lebanon.

From 5 pm, the café is hosting a Soliday for Lebanon, where we will be serving Lebanese food and live music.
From 7 pm, we invite you join us for a short film by writer and artist, Farrah Berrou. Buffer Zone is part-documentary, part-memoir, taking us back to her ancestral border village of Kfarkila in southern Lebanon as she visits for the first time since October 8, 2023.

Following the film, we’ll share an intimate, open discussion on supporting relief efforts alongside the creative community in Lebanon, as well as how, from Berlin, we can stand in solidarity against genocidal erasure and violence.
The filmmaker will join us for a virtual commentary.

📽Politic Movie Night Kollektiv Herman Schulz

📆 DO 26.03.26
🍛 18:00 Vegan food
🎬 19:00 Movie Night

On March 18, Political Prisoners’ Day, our Political Movie Night will focus on the 1981 hunger strike by Irish political prisoners from the IRA and the INLA.

Hunger strikes played a central role in the struggle for Irish independence. Among other things, republican prisoners fought for the United Kingdom to recognize their status as political prisoners. As part of its policy of “criminalization,” the Thatcher government ended this special status for political prisoners in 1976. As a result, all Northern Irish Catholics suspected of pro-republican activism could henceforth be imprisoned without trial.

In May 1981, Bobby Sands, Francis Hughes, Raymond McCreesh, and Patsy O’Hara died after a hunger strike lasting several months; many more deaths followed in the months that followed: Joe McDonnell, Martin Hurson, Kevin Lynch, Kieran Doherty, Thomas McElvee, Michael Devine

Their deaths sparked protests and riots and had a major impact on Northern Ireland: they also led to an influx of new members for the IRA and strengthened the republican movement.

📽Black Politic Movie Night by BlackHistoryMonth at Café Collective Hermann Schulz

📆 Wed, February 11 & February 25
🍛 6 p.m. Cameroonian food (vegan)
🎬 7 p.m. Film for Black History Month

As part of Black History Month (BHM), we are opening the Black Politic Movie Night: “The Struggles and Power of Black People,” with a special focus on Afro/Black America: the founders of BHM and several important movements of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Wed, Feb. 11: “Black Liberation Army & Assata Shakur” [60min] [English with subtitles]
The first Black Cinema is dedicated to a 20th-century movement, the Black Liberation Army (BLA), through the figure of Assata Shakur, who left us last year. Self-defense, militancy, and repression—what can yesterday’s struggles teach us to make our struggles today successful?
The legacy of political struggles teaches us. Militancy is still relevant today, and its political legacy is and must continue to live on through our struggles.

Wed, Feb 25: “Black Lives Matter” [47:45min] [English with subtitles]
The second Black Cinema deals with a 21st-century movement: Black Lives Matter. The BLM movement’s ongoing struggle for black self-determination. The BLM’s rebellion to demand the right to exist must be international if we know that “When black people are free, everyone will be free.”

After the films, we will discuss them with a few people from Blackqueer, share our impressions, relate them to current events, and talk about the significance of Black movements for our present and future struggles.
The event will be accompanied by Cameroonian food, which our friend R*** will cook. Donations will go to him to support him in his fight for the right to stay.

Movie Night is open to everyone.

📽 Political Movie Night @ Café Collective Herman Schulz

📆 Sunday, 25 January 2026
🕓 6 p.m. Dinner, 7 p.m. Movie: 3 short films “Women are Resistance”
🍛 Pastel de choclo (vegan)

With 8 March in mind, we invite you to reflect on feminist resistance. Not as an exception, but as the norm. In three short films, women fight for survival, for recognition, for the freedom to be themselves and to tell their stories.

Palestinian Women (10:11) (english/frenvh/arabic with english subtitles)
The organisation of Palestinian women’s struggle against the Israeli occupation and their active participation in the resistance since the beginning of the occupation.

My Name is Kahentiiosta (29 min) (mohawk/english with english subtitles)
This short documentary tells the story of Kahentiiosta, a young woman from Kahnawake who was arrested after 78 days of armed conflict during the Oka Crisis in 1990. She was detained four days longer than the other women. Her crime? The prosecutor representing the Quebec government did not accept her Indigenous name.

Sòl (10 min) (french with english subtitles)
Many Black, POC, and migrant women work as carers for elderly patients. Their work, which is already strenuous and underpaid, has become even more exhausting during the COVID-19 pandemic. While some commentators describe them as overrepresented in this sector due to their culture and hail them as “guardian angels,” what do they themselves have to say about this? This cross-sectional portrait of some of these women takes the form of a meditative essay.
