“Digital Mourners” is an immersive audiovisual composition that explores mourning, memory, and cultural loss through a contemporary reactivation of Southern Italian funerary rituals. Structured as a five-movement work, the piece unfolds across synchronised multi-screen visuals and an enveloping stereo soundscape, creating a non-linear, ritualised experience rather than a narrative film. Each movement operates as a threshold, guiding the viewer through states of suspension, intensity, rupture, and reflection, where grief is not explained but enacted through sound, gesture, and duration.
The project draws on ethnographic research into Sardinian lament traditions (attittos), historically performed as collective, embodied articulations of grief. These practices inform both the sonic and visual language of the work. Field recordings made in Sardinia, fragments of archival laments, and traditional instruments such as launeddas and bena are interwoven with experimental sound practices including granular synthesis, noise textures, distortion, and low-frequency drones. Rather than treating these materials as illustrative or documentary, they are transformed into a dense sonic environment that functions as an acoustic residue of ritual, fractured, cyclical, and emotionally charged.
