One football club refuses to sign ninety-nine percent of the world's players. And they've never been relegated. ⚽🤯

This is the strangest rule in football.

Athletic Club Bilbao. Founded in 1898 in the Basque Country a region spanning northern Spain and southern France, with its own language, its own culture, and its own fierce identity.

Since 1912, Athletic have followed one rule that no other major club on Earth would ever accept.

They only sign Basque players.

Not Spanish players. Not European players. Only players born in the Basque Country, or trained at a Basque club. Bizkaia. Gipuzkoa. Álava. Navarre. And three regions in southern France. That's it. That's the entire talent pool.

Messi? Ineligible. Ronaldo? Ineligible. Every superstar in world football completely off limits.

And here's the part nobody believes. It works.

Athletic Bilbao are one of only three clubs in Spanish football history never to have been relegated. The other two? Real Madrid and Barcelona. Two global giants who sign anyone they want and one club that refuses to look outside its own region.

But the most remarkable fact isn't the trophies. It's the fans.

When Athletic supporters were polled about abandoning the rule, seventy-six percent said they would rather see their club relegated than sign a non-Basque player.

Read that again. They would rather go down.

The policy isn't even written in the club's rulebook. It's a philosophy. A promise. Passed down for over a hundred years. Today, roughly eighty-five percent of Athletic's first team came through their own academy.

In an era of billion-euro transfers, one club decided identity matters more than money.

He grew up barefoot in Mozambique. Became the best player on Earth. And the world forgot him anyway. 😢⚽

Eusébio da Silva Ferreira was born in 1942 in Mozambique then a Portuguese colony in a neighbourhood so poor he played football in the streets with no shoes.

At eighteen he moved to Portugal. Within a year he was scoring hat-tricks on debut. Within two, he scored twice as Benfica beat Real Madrid five-three in the European Cup final. He was twenty years old.

In 1965 he won the Ballon d'Or the best player in the world. Nobody called him Pelé's equal. He was Pelé's only rival.

Then came 1966. Portugal versus North Korea in the quarter-final. Within twenty-five minutes Portugal were losing three-nil. Their tournament was over.

Eusébio scored four goals. Portugal won five-three. The greatest individual performance in World Cup history.

Portugal lost the semi-final to England. Eusébio cried openly on the pitch at Wembley. The English crowd gave him a standing ovation.

He scored four hundred and seventy-three goals for Benfica. Seven hundred and thirty-three in his entire career. The Portuguese government declared three days of national mourning when he died in 2014.

The current generation barely knows his name.

Eight episodes ago, football was born in a pub argument. Today it owns the planet. And it starts again right now. ⚽🔥

Over eight episodes we covered everything. The pub in London in 1863. The sailors who spread the game across the world. The newspaper ad that founded Barcelona. Five clubs meeting in secret to create the Premier League. Germany giving the fans the power. Italy's beauty and scandal. One journalist's idea that became the Champions League.

That is the journey of football. And you have been part of it.

But here is the problem every football fan knows. The season ends. The weekends feel empty. You check your phone on Saturday morning and there is no score to look at.

That feeling ends right now.

🇪🇸 LA LIGA August 15. Barcelona defending three consecutive titles with 18-year-old World Cup winner Lamine Yamal. Real Madrid with Mbappé. El Clásico: October 25 at Camp Nou.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 PREMIER LEAGUE August 22. Arsenal defending champions, opening against Coventry City. Xabi Alonso managing Chelsea. City, Liverpool hunting the title.

🇮🇹 SERIE A August 23. Inter Milan defending. AC Milan under Ruben Amorim. Juventus rebuilding.

🇩🇪 BUNDESLIGA August 28. Bayern Munich defending their 34th title. Borussia Dortmund's Yellow Wall ready to roar.

🏆 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE September 8. 36 clubs. Final: June 5, 2027, Estadio Metropolitano, Madrid.

Over eight episodes we covered 163 years of football history. Now you know why these clubs matter. Why these leagues matter. Why that anthem stops everything when it plays.

Follow Hail Football we're covering every El Clásico, every Champions League night, every shock, every record.

Barcelona or nothing. 🔵🔴

João Cancelo was reportedly ready to spend one full year without playing football rather than give up on his return to Barça. 😳

It started with a journalist, a newspaper, and an idea. Today it stops the world. ⚽🏆

Welcome back to Hail Football's Football Series. This is the Champions League story.

The year is 1954. A French journalist named Gabriel Hanot was frustrated. The best clubs in Europe Real Madrid, AC Milan, Manchester United were never playing each other. So he wrote an article proposing a tournament. One competition. Every champion from every league in Europe. Fighting to find the greatest club on Earth.

UEFA approved it in 1955. Sixteen clubs. Pure knockout football. And on the thirteenth of June 1956, Real Madrid defeated Stade de Reims four-three in Paris becoming the first ever European champions.

Then Real Madrid did something nobody has ever matched. They won it five times in a row. Five consecutive European Cups between 1956 and 1960.

In 1992, the competition was rebranded as the UEFA Champions League. That iconic anthem three notes every football fan on Earth recognizes — played for the first time.

Then came the moments that made history.

Manchester United, losing to Bayern Munich in the 1999 final. Two goals in injury time. They won three-two. Liverpool, down three-nil to AC Milan in Istanbul in 2005. They came back to win on penalties. The Miracle of Istanbul still the greatest comeback in football history.

Today, Real Madrid hold fifteen titles the most ever. PSG won it back to back in 2025 and 2026.

The Champions League. Where legends are made.
