VALÉRIE POTVIN: LE MIROIR

The title, The Mirror, evokes the power to reflect on truth, self-knowledge, as well as illusion and appearance, dreams and the unconscious, shame or vanity. The understanding of what a mirror is is ambiguous and multiple. These qualities underline the concept of undecidability in Valérie Potvin’s work. This notion brings out poetry and increases the capacity of hospitality of sensitive subjects. It also enables the viewer to appreciate the artwork according to his or her knowledge of the world.

We would like to acknowledge the support of the @canada.council through the component Concept to Realization from the program Explore and Create. We also thank the Québec Government Office in Berlin for its support.

Finissage: May 15 at 12pm

Opening hours: Thursday and Friday from 5pm - 8pm, Saturday and Sunday from 12pm - 6pm.

VALÉRIE POTVIN: LE MIROIR

The current pandemic has exacerbated social problems and plunged humanity into the heart of its vulnerability. For the artist, this ordeal, coupled with an impending ecological crisis and now another war, are part of an unprecedented mental overload. Valérie Potvin’s work is therefore not only an allegorical reflection of this challenging period, but also of the capacity to move forward in spite of the uncertainty.

We would like to acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts through the component Concept to Realization from the program Explore and Create. We also thank the Québec Government Office in Berlin for its support.

👉🏻Retrospective of “Die Form” exhibition from September 2020 at #bcmaberlin 🎨

If we are dealing with "the Form" as explicitly abstract, and in the constructivist sense standing for itself, the question is what is it about?
This is what @katrinbremermann , #camillleberer and @wolfjenswolf are trying to figure out in their works.

Jens Wolf (@wolfjenswolf), All paintings n.t., 2019, Acrylic on plywood, 48x36cm

For about ten years now, Jens Wolf decidedly executes his paintings as small-format, fully executed drafts, which he calls Pattern Boards. The artist owns about 200 Pattern Boards, which are now presented for the first time — in a catalog and as an exhibition. They function as models for thought and/or action and as true role models for any further disposal.

👉🏻Retrospective of “Die Form” exhibition from September 2020 at #bcmaberlin 🎨

In #camillleberer‘s work geometric and freely developed forms emerge that, in their hard demarcation from their surroundings, either define a color surface or, just the opposite, circumscribe a negative space.

Caro Suerkemper - “Bozzetti monumentali”, Varying dimensions, Fired Clay watercolor

➡️Clay sculptures by Caro Suerkemper for BRUCHLINIE, sculptural exhibition curated by Jeroen Cremers.

Caro Suerkemper’s work balances between vulnerability and abuse, power and powerlessness. It shows taboos in a way that seems fragile and innocent. In her work there seems to be a reference to art history, the form language is closely related to baroque although in concept she claims it isn‘t the most important aspect.

Dennis Feddersen - “Auf den Zähnen gehen“, "The Third Mind“, "The Secret is to keep going“

Glazed ceramic sculptures by Dennis Feddersen exhibited at BcmA's latest exhibition BRUCHLINIE, curated by Jeroen Cremers.

💥In the ceramic work of Dennis Feddersen we are confronted with partly figurative and moody creatures, that are morphed into each other. Many of the objects are pierced with holes and they look like staring eyes.

⚠️📅Until tomorrow at BcmA!

Isa Melsheimer - “Insel I”, 2021, Ceramic, glaze, 50 x 62 x 45 cm

👉🏼Isa Melsheimer investigates urban living spaces and the conditions for their design and change. Using often forgotten and neglected buildings, she recreates the characteristic forms from the vivid memory as well as from the studied aspects. In her ceramic work, she combines architectural structures with organic elements that could be a consequence of the ecological debates.

➡️Isa's sculpture for BRUCHLINIE, exhibition curated by Jeroen Cremers for BcmA.
