Sogno dell'Etna in bianco e nero (Dream of Etna in black and white)

This dreamscape by Domenico Scollo shows the active volcano Etna, which is situated on Sicily.

Size: 70x50
Material: Acryl painting on canvas

It is unusual for the artist to use only black and white in a painting, which could be interpreted as what Sicily might look like after a volcanic eruption, all covered in ash. On the other hand, it resembles a black and white photograph, where the sun is shining onto the mountain peak, leaving it up to the viewer to decipher what is pictured here.

Arrivando al porto (Arrriving at port)

Now Available !!!

Known to be a master at implementing and mixing different styles of painting, the artist Giorgio Moncada mixed two opposite painting styles in this artwork.

The bright and at times surreal use of colours as well as the shape of the sailing boat on the ocean are inspired by expressionism, whereas the way he displayed each brushstroke in the sky are more of an impressionist quality.

This is a must have by Carmelo Cilia titeld Nudo (Naked).

Size: 120x70cm
Material: Oil painting on canvas
Year: 2005
his artwork simply titled ‘Naked’ shows a naked woman in profile in the bathroom. Interestingly the brightest colours in this scenery are not within the figure in the centre, but on the tiles in the background, which are typical for Sicily. As we cannot see any distinct features in the face, this painting is not a traditional portrait but rather shows a daily scenery. This kind of abstraction of something distinct to something atmospheric is typical for Carmelo Cilia.

Provocatively looking at the spectator, this woman looks like she wants to seduce us. Made up with red lipstick and in a revealing yellow dress, she is sitting amongst a red backdrop, the colour of love and passion.

Look at this awesome painting from Riccardo Penna called
"Odalisca algerina (Algerian concubines)".

Size: 100x150
Material: Oil painting on canvas
Year: 2010

The artist Riccardo Penna used his distinctive painting style to portray this Algerian concubine. She is dressed typically in an Algerian backdrop. She is emancipated in the way she is sitting very confidently and smoking a hookah (which traditionally is rather reserved for men).

Riccardo Penna interpretation of a bride and groom
"Gli sposi (The spouses)".

Size: 50x60
Material: Oil painting on canvas
Year: 2010

This beautiful painting shows two spouses in wedding gear. They are dressed in a very elegant and old-fashioned way, bringing special atmosphere to this artwork. Their gaze makes us wonder what they are looking at, as they are not facing each other nor us, adding a bit of mystery to this otherwise traditional moment.

Mare di Notte (Ocean at Night)

Nice artwork from Carmelo Cilia "Mare di Notte (Ocean at Night)".

Size: 60x120cm
Material: Oil painting on canvas
Year: 2007

As the title suggest, this painting is showing the ocean at night at the Mare di Marina di Ragusa. Due to the bold brush strokes, the artist abstracts the scenery a bit and wants to convey an atmosphere rather than an exact depiction of the place. The dark colours bring about a mystical atmosphere to this large-scale oil painting and the subtle shimmer of the moonlight adds an element of melancholy.

Check out the oil painting from Riccardo Penna "La venere intellettual (The intellectual Venus)"

Year: 2008

Playing with the name of the goddess Venus, this painting shows one of many sides of the emblematic woman, namely the intellectual one as the title suggests. Although she is portrayed naked, the title puts the focus on her reading a book and not her sexuality.

Have you every been to Ragusa Ibla (Sicily), the Unesco Heritage?

Riccardo Penna has drawn this awesome scenery "Notturno su Ibla (Night View over Ibla)" in 2010.

Size: 70x100
Material: Oil painting on canvas
Year: 2010

This realistic oil painting depicts the “Duomo di San Giorgio” in Ragusa Ibla. Riccardo Penna started to work on the painting in 2003 and finished it by 2010. Since it took him 7 years to complete the work, one can still see the palm trees (which have been destroyed by insects and can no longer be found in this area). Thus the image embodies both, a time travel a few years back, but also a kind of summary of different periods.

Check out this beautiful oil painting by Sicilian artist Francesco Giombarresi "Vaso di Fiori (Vase of Flowers)"

Size: 50x70cm
Material: Oil painting on canvas
Year: 1990

This abstract painting from Francesco Giombarresi is another great example of the many different periods of painting styles he had. Without the title it would be difficult to clearly decipher what he is depicting here, but it is in the end rather about the raw beauty of nature and the play of colours emanating from the bouquet.

😅"Quasi nudo (Almost Nude)" by Riccardo Penna drawn in 2019.

Size: 60x45
Material: Oil painting on canvas
Year: 2019

This is a humoristic painting of a volumtuous woman in a tight bathing suit. Titled ‘almost nude’ it funnily describes the little support these tiny pieces of clothing are offering. Meant as a funny scene the artist observed in real life, it shows a typical moment everyone could experience on a beach in Sicily.

Can you see the hidden facial profile in this wonderful Oil painting?
The Sicilian artist Franco Cilia has finalized this so called "Pancaspe" painting in 1994.

Size: 70x70
Material: Oil painting on canvas
Year: 1994

Franco Cilia painted this work of art in a period where he was less interested in the figurative but more in the magicality of the sky and the cosmos. The extreme bright and colourful sky makes it seem like it is situated in a colourful galaxy. In this beautiful composition the bright red is mirrored in the woman’s dress, rounding it up nicely.

Sicilian Artist Riccardo Penna has finished this Oil painting in 2018 with the Titel "Odalisca greca (Greek concubines)"

Size: 75x50
Material: Oil painting on canvas
Year: 2018

In his recent period, the artist Riccardo Penna often depicts women in his very distinct portrait style; round faces, expressive eye areas, small noses and bright red lips. He manages, however, with a simple gesture of the subject and some features to distinguish them from each other. Here the hair ornaments and the gesture of the woman sewing something, suggests that we are looking at a Greek concubine

Doccia (Shower)

Sicilian Artist Carmelo Cilia is one of the most famous local artists. This wonderful oil painting is called "Doccia (Shower)" from 2007.

Size: 60x120
Material: Oil on canvas.

This artwork simply titled ‘Shower’ shows a naked person. The blurred quality could depict the shower steam, meaning that this painting is not a traditional portrait but rather shows a daily scenery. The abstraction goes so far, that it is not completely clear whether the artist shows a woman or a man. This kind of abstraction serves to highlight the atmosphere, which is typical in Carmelo Cilia’s work.

This Oil painting artwork from Michele Nigro
is called "Amore genera amore (Love Generates Love)" finalized in 2007.

Size: 60x80cm
Material: Oil painting on canvas
Year: 05.05.2007

The artist Michele Nigro lives the traditional and romantic notion of an artist, who uses paint and canvas to express his innermost feelings, which are often hard to explain in words. This painting translates its title ‘Love Generates Love’ beautifully with a range of vibrant orange-reds and a mesmerizing turquoise.

Ballerini di Tango (Tango dancers)

This amazing artwork from the Sicilian artist Riccardo Penna is called Ballerini di Tango (Tango dancers).

Size: 60x120. Material: Oil painting on canvas. Year: 2008.

As the title of this painting gives away, it is showing two tang dancers, although it rather seems like a portrait than a moment of the dynamic dance as both dancers are looking at the viewer. But this doesn’t take any of the intensity of their face expressions away. The fact that they are (although dressed up) in a natural setting on a beach shows the purity of love and fashion. The notion of purity is enhanced by the blue of the sky, ocean, suit and even eye areas, filling almost the entire canvas.

Arte Nostra

Arte Nostra is a trade brand offering unique artworks from Sicily.

We are a Berlin based start up, that was founded by Vito Salvatore Failla in 2019. Behind Vito is a network of friends, family, art galleries and artists from the wonderful and culture rich Italian island of Sicily.

An artwork from Sicily will bring this special atmosphere into every home. If you have been to Sicily, you know the kind of magic and rich culture we are talking about. As the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, the Italian region Sicily is home to the active Vulkano Etna, who at times spits dust, flames and lava onto this beautiful piece of land. Like Etna’s lava floating onto Sicily’s territory, blood has been shed for thousands of years when empires tried to occupy Sicily as the geo-strategic position to control the Mediterranean Sea.

The earliest archaeological evidence of human activity on the island dates from as early as 12,000 BC. By around 750 BC, Sicily had three Phoenician and a dozen Greek colonies and was later the site of the Sicilian and the Punic Wars.

After the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD, Sicily experienced many different rulers. Sicily was then unified until it finally became part of Italy in 1860 following the Expedition of the Thousand, a revolt led by Giuseppe Garibaldi. Sicily was given special status as an autonomous region on 15 May 1946, 18 days before the Italian constitutional referendum.

No matter where in the world, artists have always conveyed their thoughts, feelings and beliefs through their unique form of expression.

Sicily and its people have been shaped for tens of thousands of years by cultures that have tried to control, colonize or take possession of this magnificent land. This is rooted in the rich and unique culture of Sicily and has inspired many artists, musicians, writers and cooks as well as architects. Through these different fields, we can experience the vibrant culture today. By eating the delicious dishes, visiting one of the archaeological and ancient sites (,such as the Necropolis of Pantalica, the Valley of the Temples, Erice and Selinunte) or reading the literature, everyone can experience this culture.

But the most powerful medium to illuminate your daily lives and enrich your emotions is art. So if you feel moved by the Mediterranean history and way of life, you must get an artwork from a Sicilian Artist to bring a piece of the culture in your home.
