Roam projects

Roam projects roam projects e.V. is a Berlin-based non-profit active since 2020. roam space is project space in Berlin-Kreuzberg since 2021

The association's main focus is on the art and cultural exchange with Eastern Europe, such as exhibitions and artist residencies. roam is a newly opened project space in the centre of Berlin with a residency program focusing on East European artist exchange and a changing exhibition program. The project space accommodates art shows, shorter pop-up projects and networking events. roam was founded b

y the artist Ottjörg A.C. and RAM – Rebel Art Management in 2021. The goal of roam is to set an example against the dynamics of gentrification in relation to the art market and to be hereby openly critical of outdated and unsustainable structures regarding the art scene. roam defines itself as a platform to engage with international protagonists of the free and independent art scene by strengthening Europe-wide connections, sharing already existing contacts and welcoming creatives to this fastly growing network. As a residency space, roam invites two artists per year for a 1-2 month stay in spring, before the Gallery Weekend Berlin. The project space, furnished with an equipped kitchen, bathroom and shower, and a second level for sleeping, can be used for both work and accommodation. At the end of the residency time the produced artworks are presented within the context of pop-up events during the highlights of the Berlin art year. Afterwards a connected cooperation exhibition with an institution or gallery in the home country follows to secure a sustainable and international visibility. Depending on the individual project, the team of roam is supporting the artist in realisation of diverse events such as pop-up exhibitions, panel talks, workshops and networking events.

Labour of Love
13 positions on invisible labour, gender power and societal equality

📌 Opening Friday, 27.2, 6-9 pm

The exhibition includes works by 13 female* artists who address questions of art production and the everyday. Modes of labour historically coded as "women's work" are examined not only in terms of their ambivalence between fulfillment and hardship, but also with regard to strategies for improving working conditions through networking, research, and political engagement.

Curated by Bettina Semmer, the exhibition symbolically opens on Equal Pay Day and addresses the tension between artistic production and everyday care work.

The accompanying program expands on these themes, including a panel talk on March 7 and a children's painting workshop on March 14.

Artists: Solweig de Barry, Elisa Jule Braun, Paula Breuer, Roberta Cotterli, Josephine Hans, Maria Kallau, Sarah Loibl, Toni Mauersberg, Anna Nezhnaya, Sophia Novosel, Yurika Saito, Marta Vovk, Cora Wöllenstein

February = Black History Month 💖

'Wir Deutschen' is presented during Black History Month, a time dedicated to remembering, honoring, and celebrating Black histories and voices. While the exhibition engages with Black German perspectives in the GDR through the works of Lily and Michael Roggemann, based on the biography of Cornelia Roggemann-Heuer, this month also invites reflection on broader historical contexts.

In the former GDR, the socialist state positioned itself as anti-imperialist and anti-racist, presenting racism as a problem of capitalist societies. At the same time, Black people came to East Germany to study, work, or seek asylum , often through international solidarity programs and bilateral agreements with countries in Africa and Asia.

While educational and professional opportunities were created, everyday experiences often revealed a gap between official ideology and lived reality. Racism was frequently denied rather than openly addressed, leaving little room to speak about discrimination.

These tensions between solidarity and silence, ideology and everyday life are part of Black German history.

By situating personal and family stories within these histories, the exhibition offers a lens to understand identity, belonging, and representation.

Last chance to visit! ✨

Open Friday, 4-7 pm and Saturday, 4-8 pm

Final day (Saturday): Safe Space Storytelling at 5 pm
with Amon Aleme Selassie (exhibiting artist), Cornelia Roggemann-Heuer (contemporary witness of the GDR), and Patrice Poutrus (head of the department 'Work Against Racism' at the Amadeu Antonio Foundation)

Warm invitation to our Safe Space Storytelling on February 21 at 5 pm:

Amon Aleme Selassie (exhibiting artist), Cornelia Roggemann-Heuer (contemporary witness of the GDR), and Patrice Poutrus (head of the department 'Work Against Racism' at the Amadeu Antonio Foundation) will speak about their childhood experiences, societal perceptions and their influence on biography and self-understanding – as well as present-day perspectives on equal treatment, community and belonging.

We see this event as an open discussion and an invitation to participate. We welcome contributions and additional perspectives!

The conversation will take place in German.

The exhibition will be open on 21.2. from 4 to 8 pm! 💙

At the heart of the exhibition project 'Wir Deutschen' are Black German perspectives and the question of how identity is shaped between private everyday life, the family environment, and societal images. The photographic, installation, and film works by Amon Aleme Selassie, Lily Roggemann, and Michael Roggemann draw on individual biographies and address experiences of belonging, representation, and self-perception.
