Our film, 80 Angry Journalists begins in the summer of 2020, when Hungary’s largest independent newsroom collapses under political pressure. More than eighty journalists resign together. One of them, war correspondent Földes András, turns his camera on his own newsroom as it unravels.

What begins as a moment of collective resistance becomes a longer story about survival, leadership, and the fragile dynamics inside a community trying to defend independent journalism.

The film follows the journalists over four years — from the walkout to the creation of a new newsroom, and the pressures that continue to shape their work and relationships.

80 Angry Journalists is screening at:

We always knew that dok.incubator is one of the strongest documentary development platforms in Europe.

At the beginning of 2025, we weren’t even properly at rough-cut stage with 80 Angry Journalists. Our Czech co-producer, Vít Janeček, convinced me we should apply anyway. Applications were technically closed. “We’ll go through the regional selection as a Slovak documentary. We’ll manage,” he said — half serious, half determined.

In April, we arrived with something that was closer to an assembly cut than a rough cut. By the time other films had already refined their first versions, we were still trying to understand ours. Only by the end of the three workshop sessions did we reach what others had brought to the starting line.

What we did have was time. More than ten hours of detailed feedback from our tutors, Christilla Kann and Aurélien Guégan. Precise, demanding, patient. I remember running transcripts through AI multiple times just to process the notes and structure the thinking.

Months later, we must have done something right.

We sent the rough cut to CPH:DOX.

Now we’re racing to finalize the DCP and make sure everything technically works. And we’re incredibly grateful to be here.

Thank you, dok.incubator.

Now that the full program of CPH:DOX has been released, it is official that you will get a chance to watch three brand new dok.incubator films at the festival! 💫

Thank you so much for your amazing contribution and standing by this film, team Differ Media!

Differ Media is a proud to be co-producer on the incredibly important documentary 80 Angry Journalists which will have its long-awaited premiere this weekend at the BIDF - Budapest International Documentary Festival!

The film follows from the inside as Hungary’s largest independent news outlet, Index, is taken over by figures close to the country’s authoritarian government. In an unprecedented act of solidarity, eighty journalists resign together, unwilling to serve under political influence.

Congratulations to the wonderful main producer Lorand Balazs Imre (FilmDough ) and director Földes András , we are so excited to follow as the film meets its audience, travels around the world, and reminds us of the importance of a free press. Thank you to Stiftelsen Fritt Ord for supporting the project in Norway and to the brave journalists who have shared their story in the film.

The Hungarian Parliament is preparing to vote on a bill titled “On the Transparency of Public Life.” Given the ruling party’s two-thirds majority under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the bill is expected to pass. If enacted, it would endanger the work and livelihoods of Hungarian documentary filmmakers who rely on international funding to tell stories that challenge the government’s narrative or focus on issues deemed controversial or “anti-Hungarian,” such as marginalized communities or dissenting viewpoints. Share this letter within your filmmaker community, raise awareness, put pressure on your local film institutes or educate them about what is happening in Hungary.
