Robert Filliou
March 7 – April 15, 2026
Opening Saturday, March 7, 4–8 pm

“Robert Filliou is one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Perhaps it takes the 21st century to realize this.” These clear words were written by the curator Anders Kreuger about the “playwright, poet, artist and thinker” Robert Filliou. In 2017, Kreuger curates an important retrospective at M HKA in Antwerp titled The Secret of Permanent Creation, accompanied by an outstanding publication. It is the fourth retrospective devoted to Filliou since 1984 and the first after twelve years. Despite the fact that Filliou’s activities as well as his retrospectives after his death in 1987 date long time back, Kreuger notes that “it never felt as if we were working with histori- cal material. Filliou’s thought and work speak directly to us today.” He emphasizes Filliou’s contemporary importance: “He is a voice for our time, speaking of the political and poetic economy, of curiosity and research as more than ‘a privilege for those who already know.’” Kreuger summarizes what makes Filliou so singular, “he is trying out new names for what he is doing and making. Instead of making art, he speaks of Permanent Creation, the Genial Re- public of Research.” Kreuger calls this extraordinary capacity of Filliou “systematically free thinking.”

Porta Filliou, produced in 1977 during an Arton’s residency in Calgary by Filliou together with Marcella Bien- venue and Clive Robertson. Porta Filliou functions as a video supplement to Filliou’s book Teaching and Learning as Performing Arts (1970). Visitors will also be able to listen to the work Whispered History of Art (1963). We aim to offer with this show an informative yet entertaining introduction to the art and innovative thinking of Filliou.

Today we celebrate the 100th birthday of Fluxus artist Robert Filliou (1926–1987).

We also celebrate Art’s Birthday.
In 1963, Filliou declared his own birthday January 17 as a birthdate for art, imagining it to have begun 1,000,000 years earlier. Conceived as a tribute to art’s presence in everyday life, this day has since been celebrated worldwide.

On January 17, 2026, art turns 1,000,063 years old.

In this spirit, we are pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition:

Shimabuku
“Self Portrait”
August 23 – November 1, 2025

In “Self Portrait”, Shimabuku‘s third solo exhibition with Galerie Barbara Wien, a selection of his conceptual works, spanning the years 1991 to 2023, is on view.

The installation “Cuban Samba Remix (by NOMURA Makoto)” from 2023, has its own exhibition space in the gallery and
invites the viewer to experience various spheric sounds.
Shimabuku’s first water dripping sound work was created in a former bicycle factory in Havana during his participation in the Havana Biennial in 2015. The roof was rotten, and water was dripping from a broken pipe into the middle of the room. Shimabuku placed empty tin cans under the falling drops, and thus music was created. This inspired him to invite his musician friend Nomura Makoto to play the piano along with the sound of the
water drops.

Shimabuku, born in Kobe, Japan, in 1969, is an artist renowned for his experimental and innovative works, based on his own curiosity. His creations often evolve through various adaptations, through which he explores new contexts and ideas.

“Museu Habitat” is a new initiative led by Manuel J. Borja-Villel – a curatorial proposition to rethink the institutional landscape of Catalonia and imagine new practices that could guide its museum ecosystem in the decades to come. The project addresses fundamental issues such as governance and inclusion, the redistribution of resources, archival practices, and the enduring entanglements of modernity and coloniality.

The exhibition “Fabular Paisatges, Museu Habitat” brings together historical works from Catalan collections alongside contemporary creations by local, national, and international artists.

We are delighted to announce that Dan Lie will present “Witnesses/Testigues” (2022–2025) — their largest installation to date. It is is a large-scale installation that brings together the full sculptural body of work Dan Lie has developed since 2021. It activates the exhibition space of “Museu Habitat” with a living ecology of materials. Rooted in cycles of transformation and decay, the work speaks to ancestral presence, loss, strategies of mourning and grief, and the politics of memory.

The sculptures are composed of remaining materials that did not perish from their previous installations, incorporating elements from earlier works: “Grieving Secret Society”, presented at the 58th Carnegie International in Pittsburgh (2022); “The Unloved Ones”, at Zwingli Kirche, Berlin (2023); and “Remains Remembering” at Galerie Barbara Wien (2024).
The fabric components are dyed naturally with turmeric, displaying various hues of yellow that fade with exposure to sunlight. Other materials include yellow chrysanthemum flowers, natural fiber rope, soil, rice, sugar, water, lavender, wooden cylinders, and early 20th-century ceramic jars.

Last chance to see Elisabeth Neudörfl's exhibition "Ansichten von K.". It is still on view until Saturday, April 12.

“Betze” is short for “Betzenberg”, a ridge in the city of Kaiserslautern, and the location of the Fritz Walter Stadium, home of the football club 1. FC Kaiserslautern, which currently plays in the 2. Bundesliga but was in the 1. Bundesliga from 1963 to 1996.
On the junction boxes photographed by Elisabeth Neudörfl near the stadium, you can see stickers with the club emblem of 1. FC Kaiserslautern and stickers with texts such as "Pfalz Inferno Ultras Kaiserlautern" and "K-Town Reds. Riot Crew", documenting the "turf war" in the area.

Elisabeth Neudörfl’s eponymous artist book "Ansichten von K.", published by Hatje Cantz, Berlin in 2024, contains the complete series of 77 photographs and a text by the sociologist Annette Spellerberg.
The book is available in the gallery.

Elisabeth Neudörfl's exhibition "Ansichten von K." is on view at the gallery until April 12, 2025.

When Elisabeth Neudörfl was in Kaiserslautern to work on her photographic documentation, she realised that the city, also known as "K-Town", is strongly characterised by US military presence, due to it's proximity to the US airbase "Ramstein". So she decided to portray the housing areas of the US population as well.
When taking photographs, the artist herself was most surprised by “how close the aeroplanes fly over the city on their approach to Ramstein. And how two very different conceptions of urban space exist side by side: a European-historical city, typical of the Federal Republic of Germany, and spaces that feel very American, which are much more open, but also more disorganised.”

Elisabeth Neudörfl’s eponymous artist book "Ansichten von K.", published by Hatje Cantz, Berlin in 2024, contains the complete series of 77 photographs and a text by the sociologist Annette Spellerberg.
The book is available in the gallery.

ARCOmadrid 2025: As part of “Profiles / Latin American Art,” curated by José Esparza Chong Cuy, we are showcasing a solo presentation by Dan Lie.

Our booth features a selection of Dan Lie’s textile sculptures from the series “Members,” showcasing suspended forms in mid-air, alongside drawings from “The Reek Testimonials.”

In their drawing practice, Lie employs a variety of mediums on paper, including oil stick, charcoal, watercolour, diluted gouache, and various pastels – oil, soft, and dry. The shapes of the non-human protagonists and primary forms of “The Reek Testimonials” are simplistic and sketch-like, reminiscent of comic drawings, which allow for the creation of images with minimal gestures. Contrastingly, the background is characterised by multiple layers, providing depth and solidity to the objects in the foreground. Lie’s process of creating drawings unfolds intuitively without strategic planning. The works in the series “The Reek Testimonial” are studies of Lie’s work “The Reek”, a large-scale installation presented at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin in 2024, which is now part of the museum’s collection.
