Bhumanjali with Giulia

I met Giulia last year and we enthusiastically threw ourselves into practicing dance together. I love her strength and passion for dance, which has permeated our practice together.
Unfortunately, the joint performance evening did not come to fruition, although we had lots of ideas. We hope to have the opportunity to perform together on stage in the future.

My dance school, Shivashakti Kalananda Dance Theater is 25 years old. I was also invited to participate in the gala performance in Budapest among our guests, old and present performers. We had a really great time together and a beautiful inspirating dance time!
I am happy and grateful that I could be a dancer of this group from the beginnings until 2019, and that I am still getting a warm and loving welcome whenever I visit 🥰

Natabhairavi Tillana

A cut version of Natabhairavi Tillana
There are lot of Bharatanatyam videos on YouTube and on Facebook. All of them perfect: perfect costumes, perfect hair and flowers, perfect faces, perfectly cut videos. Nobody seems to want to show the work behind. The imperfection which had led to perfection. Dancers seem to fear to show their way to their perfect performances. Or find it not important thinking "If I show that long way which I had to get through, other dancers will think me clumsy."
I think we should recognise the process of learning, even if it shows us as we are: imperfect human beings.
Natabhairavi Tillana is a work in progress. Even the few parts shown here have faults; you can imagine those I have omitted. Or better not :)
But without this imperfect stage there won't be a perfect one. I hope I will be there to show you!

What are two things that are of paramount importance in a dancer's life, but the audience is not interested in at all?
I think it's practice and a place to practice.
During the pandemic, I hardly had the opportunity to practice, one of the reasons being that I didn't have a place to practice. At home, in the rearranged kitchen, there was little space to move properly, but Panni Somi's online classes kept me going 💖.
As soon as the epidemic situation allowed, I contacted Sylvia Hadrich, who runs a ballet and dance school in Pankow, herself a ballet dancer.
For the past two weeks I have been able to practice in a dancer's environment in the space she rents and I hope to continue in the same space from August!
And the attached video is a short extract from that practice. Boring, yes, because it's not a staged performance, but about the real work that is a behind an elaborate performance.

World Dance Day 2021

World Dance Day 2021
I'm a little late posting this, but it was taken yesterday, on World Dance Day.
This dance is a small excerpt from the much-loved Natyanjali of the Dhananjayan couple and a tribute to my dance teacher Panni Somi, without whom I would not have been a dancer.

Animation of takita

I just finished a longish post and I wanted to add this animation. My post disappeared as the video uploader appeared. Nice. I have to try remember and reconstrue it.

Sooo, yesss, I didn't post for some time. Probably you guessed well: thanks Covid19 my exercise classes were cancelled. First I tried to find a new room not far from my place as my kids were also to stay at home doing homeschooling. No success.
In the end I could join the online classes of my dear teacher, Panni Somi. It requires a lot from my family: we have to finish our supper in time and rearrange the kitchen for the class to have enough space to move. And they stay away not to disturb me.
One hour a week is very little dance. It just helps me to stay on the surface. But even for this little I am thankful to Panni and my family. And hope that soon there will be more possibility to dance.

This animation I created back in 2009 and post here just for fun and to have smile after this earnest post :)

Happy new year!

Sariga kungu

I'd like to wish you all a very merry Christmas. For this occasion I looked up an old video, it's more than 13 years old! It was shot on a really nice evening and under more storytelling items we danced the javali Sariga kungu. The mischievous Krishna pilfers the fresh butter and buttermilk made by the lovely gopis.
My dear dance teacher and friend, Panni Somi played the part of the child Krishna and I acted as a gopi.

Last dance class this year! I planned a nice new dance video for Christmas, but had to give up this idea as I had no time to get properly dressed. But nevermind, I now plan a nice old video for Christmas! But let me find it first on my hard drive 😉

And as you are waiting for an old video, I attach here an old photo...

Arabhi Mahishasuramardini - a conceptual jathiswaram

I had a new idea around the time of Diwali: why not give a little bit of conception to jathiswaram? Its intricate rhythm could be used as a starting point for… let’s say for a fight.

Along these lines I produced my first version: a fight between Good and Evil. I made a record of it and showed as a Diwali item to my mates in my old dance group. Some of them even liked it :)

Later I decided to evolve my first idea to something more concrete: not some abstract fight between Good and Evil, but I wanted a real story to join the quite energetic Arabhi jathiswaram. As this year Diwali was preceded by Durga Puja by not too many days, it was natural that I chose Durga and Mahishasura.

Their fight can just really nicely fit to the jathiswaram’s structure:
Mahisha und Durga are shown alternately (tirmanam and korves 1-3), the fight occurs in the forth korve, the fifth korve is about the joy of gods, saints and people following the victory of Durga.

In this video you can see me practicing the first, second and part of the third corve. Some of my uncertainty shows on the video as this is a work in progress, not the end result 😅.

I promise I will get better and better :)

Jathiswaram! You would think it a nice but simple item: you just do all the steps correct and graceful, smile and that's it. It looks of course beautiful solo or in groups, it can have complicated steps but there is not too much behind the smiling faces. Really?
What I think is a jathiswaram is an excellent piece for just exercise complex steps and a smiling face, but can it be more? I really much believe that it can be fitting material for anything you want to say through Bharatanatyam.
More to follow, let me show you what I think in a few days.
