Five brothers. 560 victories. One route that changed everything.
In September 1894, Friedrich (“Fritz”) Opel — 19 years old, son of Adam Opel — won the 620 km race from Basel to Kleve in 27 hours and 50 minutes. First place. Imperial prize from Kaiser Wilhelm II.
The night before the race, a rival told him: “Fritz, you’ll turn off at Strasbourg or Mainz.”
Fritz passed Strasbourg. He passed Mainz. He finished first.
The Opel brothers weren’t just cyclists. They were the product. Every race was a test of the bicycle they built. 560 victories between 1889 and 1898. The race was the factory.
By 1898, the export markets had closed. US tariffs: ~48%. Russia: fixed duty per wheel. Domestic overproduction had crashed prices. The brothers turned to the automobile — not instead of the bicycle, but alongside it. In 1925, Opel was the world’s largest bicycle manufacturer.
Same brothers. Same routes. Same logic.
