While @filmfestlocarno is going on and showing an inspiring selection of films, here is a special recommendation from us: O Bobo by José Álvaro Morais, one of the unique masterpieces of Portuguese cinema. Available online on Mubi.

“It is a kaleidoscope of gestures, words, sounds, mise-en-scène, scene transitions and shot junctions. Everything is operatic in The Jester. But there’s nothing grand about it, because it’s a comic opera. The film’s musicality, which is sensual, swinging and ironic, does not conceal the seriousness of the wounds.”

• How do you stay creative nowadays? - Everyday life inspires me. What do I personally perceive? Which topics are negotiated socially? What happens on the social media channels, which headlines accompany us all day long? In what language are political news communicated? What social fears haunt us, what moves us as a collective? And the associated feedback, to what extent do I put myself in a particular discourse as an individual? • What are you working on at the moment? - I am currently preparing the next exhibition for the Kunstverein Wolfenbüttel, which will open in October. Together with the artist Jana Doell, we both enter into a dialogue with our works.
Exhibition: It's all about you and me, Oct 4 - Nov 1, 2020.

EXHIBITION, July 4-5, 2pm – 6pm

The UdK Film Institute and Display are hosting WELTUNTERGANG, an exhibition of works resulting from the eponymous seminar held by Constantin Hartenstein at UdK's Institute for time-based media.

As a starting point for an extreme model of thought, imagine this: ALL relevant energy resources on earth have been used up. Electricity per se is nonexistent. All hard drives, projectors, cameras and technical devices can only be used to a very limited extent. In this neo-surreal set-up, the participants of the seminar developed their own artistic works - without the use of any electricity for production and presentation. During the exhibition, the gallery is operated entirely without electricity as well.

Due to life-changing cuts in the current, own filmmaking process and limited availability of means of production, how can we rethink "the cinematic" realm? What is "the new normal" in film? And how can (moving) images exceed their medium?

Live performances by Hedi Yatouji/Clarissa Maria Undritz as well as Selina Laut take place at the opening night. Please arrive early.

Restricted visit conditions: 2 pers. at a time, with face mask and outside 1,5 distance rule

Organizational Assistance: Deniz Simsek
Curatorial Advisor: Marie du Pasquier
Design Invite: Max Quecke

June - This is Maryna Makarenko. She is doing her Meisterschüler in the class “Experimental Film” of Prof. Nina Fisher.
These are video stills from her installation “Walking on a Sleeping Elk”, that illustrates the subculture of urban exploration “stalking” that emerged in post-soviet countries in 90s.

• How do you stay creative nowadays?
-To stay creative I move. Ideas never come to me if I sit down with a paper to generate them. They come when I dance, run, spend time with friends, stay with nature, basically come back to simple Paleolithic activities. Studio practice is a final touch after putting all these colours together. I enter my creativity through my physicality. Sometimes it feels like it is triggered by the most boring actions.
•What are you working on at the moment? -On making friends with my inner dictator, nourishing the child inside, not giving too much power to my body over my mind and vice versa and creating a mind-space for my Meisterschüler project about eating the Sun.

Film recommendation of the month: Ashes by Apichatpong Weerasethakul | 2012, 20’

"Ashes contemplates love, pleasure, and the destruction of memory. The surroundings of everyday life are shared with extreme intimacy. For Apichatpong, Thailand, while full of beauty, is slowly collapsing into darkness.”

VITRINE is an exhibition project which started in the seminar "Banned Movies" at the UdK Filminstitut. Each week, a student showed a new work that related to current circumstances, a movie that we discussed or a free topic. It's probably Berlin's smallest gallery 😂

VITRINE even has a website. Check out the exhibitions here:

www.vitrine-berlin.de

We will continue with new exhibitions soon. Stay tuned ⚒

18/10/2019

The seminar BANNED MOVIES organized by the Filminstitut and held by Constantin Hartenstein, the new artistic associate @udkfilminstitut starts NEXT WEDNESDAY October 23 from 2-4pm in room 26B at UdK Medienhaus.

still from: Salo, Pier-Paolo Pasolini

Poison cabinets. Spock in SS uniform. The German chainsaw massacre. Film censorship is closely related to the political, structural and legal realities of receptive systems. From the minimally invasive, emotional manipulation of US election adverts to heteronormally purged romantic comedies to terrifying splatter-core slaughters, the seminar critically questions the characteristics and mechanisms of our censored (moving) image landscapes and puts them in relation to the utopia of artistic freedom.

Every week a censored movie is watched together. The reasons for its censorship are discussed. In four adjoining, monthly block sessions, the seminar group then produces a film that would undoubtedly be censored worldwide. Invited experts lead the seminar group in the topics of scriptwriting, camera, directing and post-production. The movie will be shown publicly.

seminar starts October 23rd, 2-4 pm, room 26B, UdK Medienhaus, Grunewaldstr. 2-5

screenings every Wednesday, 2-4 pm, R 26B

block sessions Fridays 1.11., 6.12. 17.1., 7.2.
