Pitch Shifting // a platform for live audiovisual systems and process-based performance

Pitch Shifting is a research-driven audiovisual platform initiated by Sanja Star and Grgur Savić. It develops live environments where sound, image, light, and material processes interact in real time through feedback, signal behaviour, and computational modulation. At its core is an ongoing research practice (

Star / Savić), expanding into collaborative configurations with invited artists. These setups function as open systems, where structure emerges through interaction between performers, technological systems, and spatial conditions. Pitch Shifting operates through iterative formats adapted to different contexts, including performance, installation, and research-based work. Formats include:
// live system activation
// installation-performance configurations
// workshops and collaborative research sessions

Pitch Shifting works as a distributed network of artists across experimental sound, media art, and performance, including Richard Scott, Samuel Hall, Ute Wassermann, Emilio Gordoa, Tomomi Adachi, Nicolas Collins, Rieko Okuda, and others. The platform functions as a modular system that adapts to institutional, spatial, and collaborative contexts.

PITCH SHIFTING is an experimental audio-visual collaboration established in 2019 between musician Grgur Savic and visual artist Sanja Star. The project explores the intersection of contemporary music with live, audio-reactive visual projections—a clear representation of sound through highly abstract imagery. Alongside a more intimate unit, primarily performing as a duo, the project expands into a larger quartet formation, exploring multidisciplinary outputs.

The group challenges the limits of forward-thinking ideas-sound-to-image integration, combining acoustic instruments with generative systems that process sounds in real time, seamlessly blending diverse sonic landscapes. A continuous journey of wave motion and alternating currents through highly abstract visual and sound, performing electro-acoustic sets in close conversation, dissolving boundaries across media and genres: musical, visual, art, animation, video, improvisation, compositions, real-time performance, analogue, digital, acoustic and electronic.

PITCH SHIFTING has performed at the 31st Zagreb Music Biennale, Audioart Festival P**a, Sound Art Festival Split, Porgy & Bess Vienna, Multiversal Festival Berlin, LPM -live performers meeting, PANDA Theatre among others.

about:
Pitch Shifting is an experimental audiovisual collaboration founded in 2019 by musician Grgur Savic and visual artist Sanja Star. The project explores the intersection of contemporary music and live audio-reactive visual animations, a clear representation of sound through highly abstract imagery.

Alongside a more intimate format that primarily performs as a duo, the project also expands into a larger quartet formation, exploring multidisciplinary outcomes. The group challenges the boundaries of forward-thinking ideas: the integration of sound and image, the combination of acoustic instruments with generative systems that process sound in real time, and the seamless blending of diverse sonic landscapes.

A continuous journey of wave-like movements and alternating currents unfolds through highly abstract images and sounds, where electro-acoustic sets are performed in close dialogue, dissolving the boundaries between media and genres: music, image, art, animation, video, improvisation, composition, real-time performance, analog, digital, acoustic, and electronic.”

Pitch Shifting has performed, among others, at the 31st Zagreb Music Biennale, the Audioart Festival P**a, the Sound Art Festival Split, at Porgy & Bess Vienna, the Multiversal Festival Berlin, the LPM – Live Performers Meeting Italy, and others.

UN:MATERIAL: Micro-sonic actions, tactile manipulations, and subtle material interactions, where sound emerges from proximity, texture, and pressure rather than conventional technique, foregrounding listening as an intimate, bodily, and material practice.

un:material is a hybrid audiovisual research-performance exploring the performative dissection of material objects and how materials, computers, and physical actions work together. The work is not seen as a stable medium, but as a format in which objects are examined, deconstructed, and operated on through close, precise, and often microscopic actions, transforming them into a site of sonic surgery. Using artefacts alongside his main instruments (alto and soprano saxophone), Savić performs a surgical examination of the instrument, using extended techniques that are amplified and electronically processed to transform material forms into forensic sound procedures. Combining audio-reactive 3D animation, live visual improvisation, and amplified material actions—drawing gestures on wearable elements and amplified clothing—Sanja treats the media format not as accompaniment but as structural and performative material. By continuously negotiating acoustic, electronic, visual, and physical processes in real time, the work operates as a clinical probe into audiovisual systems, revealing their conditions and inviting attention to mediation, perception, and the shifting boundary between material and immaterial.

un:material is situated within contemporary practices of experimental music, generative media, and artistic research, and is conceived for performance, installation, and research-oriented contexts.
