This title carries for me a sense of contemplation and quiet, a reminder to feel grounded. To me, it’s a gentle observation, but somehow it offers much more. Since the renovation of the building where I live and work began in February, I’ve packed, moved, unpacked, and repeated the cycle again and again. Today, as I finished this piece, I felt for the first time that I’m slowly returning to myself. Grateful to be back — and to be creating again.

Each time my hand lingers on a flower, fingers brushing over its velvet petals, I’m carried back to my grandmother’s garden. Summers there felt endless. A narrow alley ran between blooms on both sides, and to pass from one place to another, you had to move through them, touching them, or perhaps letting them touch you, with quiet affection and tender grace.

'Nie taki Sznytzel straszny' – the title is a twist on a Polish saying: "Not as scary as he seems."

I once had dachshunds. Now I have a red cat with questionable morals. If I had a dog, he’d be named Sznytzel. This is his portrait—made of paper, shaped like a Dobermann, and sporting book-cover teeth.
He doesn’t bite. He critiques.

'You Are the Flower That Makes It Right IV' is part of my latest series, which began last summer as a quiet response to everything swirling around me and inside me. It’s about light, resilience, and how beauty can still find a way to bloom, even when things feel chaotic. Flowers kept showing up as I worked, gentle but strong, fleeting yet steady. They felt like the perfect language to explore growth, change, and those in-between moments we so often rush past.

Underneath it all, there’s this tension I keep circling back to in my practice: the need to stay open. I get bored easily. Once I finish a series, it’s almost impossible for me to keep making in the same style. Repetition can feel limiting. But at the same time, I crave it. I want to build a rhythm, to create more, to move faster. It’s a constant push and pull, between structure and spontaneity, discipline and instinct.

This series really holds that tension. It’s me trying to stay honest with myself, even when things get messy or unclear. Letting the work shift and change as I do.

This particular piece has already found a home, and I’m grateful for that.

I’m so excited to be part of ‘s new exhibition, A Show of Support, featuring over 90 amazing works by their artists.

Tappan and the participating artists are donating a portion of the proceeds to help those affected by the LA fires, which makes this show even more special.
