STADTMUSEUM BECKUM
GUDRUN KEMSA – FLOATING SPACES
22 March – 17 May 2025

Opening on Sunday, 22 March 2026, 11 am
Opening Remakes: Stefan Hoffmann, Chair of the Museum Association und Michael Gerdhenrich, Mayor of the City
Introduction to the exhibition: Prof. Dr. Rolf Sachsse, Bonn

Stadtmuseum Beckum, Markt 1, 50269 Beckum >>>

In the exhibition FLOATING SPACES, we encounter familiar places from the urban and natural landscape: luxurious shopping streets, ordinary underground stations, the forest or the sea. Yet these familiar images from our memory elude their usual accessibility. In Kemsa’s works, these otherwise familiar places appear strangely alienating, unrealistically theatrical, exaggeratedly surreal, or else blurred, soft focused and nebulous – almost abstract. Gudrun Kemsa sees her photographic and video
installations as an aesthetic extension of everyday perception and, as such,
as a way of rediscovering the familiar.

STADTMUSEUM DÜSSELDORF
PERSPEKTIVWECHSEL – Fotografinnen in Düsseldorf
14 September 2025 – 4 January 2026

Opening: Sunday, 14 September 2025, 12 am
Speakers:
Clara Gerlach – Mayor of the City of Dusseldorf
Dr. Susanne Anna – Director of the Stadtmuseum Dusseldorf and the curatifs of the Exhibition: Dr. Christoph Danelzik-Brüggemann, Prof. Katharina Mayer, Tatjana Nicholson M.A., Laura Heise M.A., Isabell Bianca Centmayer M.A.

On display are historical positions, students of the Dusseldorf School of Photography and contemporary female photographers. Various themes are presented and the boundaries of the concept of photography are explored. The exhibition also reflects on the question of female aesthetics.

Due to discrimination and the long-standing lack of recognition of photography as an art form, female photographers often did not receive the attention they deserved in the art world. This exhibition showcases more than a hundred female photographers.

Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf, Berger Allee 2, 40213 Düsseldorf

Saturday, 25 October 2025, 3 pm: dialogue between Dr. Gundula Caspary und Gudrun Kemsa

Gudrun Kemsa sees her photographs and video installations as an aesthetic expansion of everyday perception and thus as an opportunity to rediscover the familiar. Through her photographic work of seemingly everyday scenarios, she opens up unusual approaches that motivate viewers to scrutinise their own visual habits and sensory impressions.

FLOATING SPACES shows photographic images of familiar places in the urban and natural landscape: luxurious shopping streets, ordinary underground stations, metropolitan buildings, trees, parks and green spaces, forests or the sea. In Kemsa’s works, these otherwise so familiar places seem strangely alien, unreal, theatrical, exaggeratedly unreal or blurred, softly drawn and nebulous - almost abstract, and thus elude the usual, easily readable accessibility. In the video installations, the pictorial spaces move contemplatively through space and time and have an immediate decelerating effect on the viewer.
