As part of the Special Project Mongolia at NordArt 2026, we are pleased to introduce artist Oyun-Erdene, whose work explores the tension between nomadic traditions and contemporary urban existence.

🏙️ Living in Hohhot, Oyun-Erdene reflects on the contrast between her nomadic upbringing and the structured, standardised rhythms of city life. Her compositions often feature rhythmically repeated and reduced figures, reflecting the individual within regulated systems, while scenes of nomadic life evoke a more fluid, cyclical and spiritually grounded way of existence.

🔄 These contrasting conditions unfold side by side. Distance and proximity, order and variation, tradition and modernity coexist within her compositions, creating a visual reflection on how different ways of living shape our perception of the world.

🎨 A defining element of Oyun-Erdene’s practice is the dialogue between two distinct painting systems: the perspective and hierarchy of oil painting meet the flat, non-hierarchical space of Mongol Zurag.

Rather than treating these approaches as opposites, she reveals them as interconnected ways of seeing and understanding the world. Through this dialogue, traditional Mongolian visual language becomes a means of engaging with contemporary urban experience.

What happens to nomadic identity in the modern city?

How do traditional and contemporary ways of seeing coexist?

Can different systems of life and thought exist side by side?

Rooted in the rich tradition of Mongol Zurag (Mongolian painting), Otgontuul Magvan Otgontuul Ogi creates a contemporary visual language exploring identity, transformation and perception.

🎭 Her paintings bring together Mongolian symbols, ornament, fragmented bodies and overlapping faces, creating layered worlds where the physical and spiritual seem to merge.

🔄 Inspired by the cyclical rhythms of nomadic life, nature and memory, her works ask us to look beyond the surface:

🎨 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | Special Project Mongolia at NordArt 2026

🌿 ODMAA URANCHIMEG

As part of the Special Project Mongolia at NordArt 2026, we are pleased to introduce Mongolian ceramic artist Odmaa Uranchimeg, whose practice explores the intersection of sculpture, installation, material and conceptual inquiry.

🏺 Drawing on Buddhist iconography and childhood memories, Odmaa creates poetic spatial environments shaped by ideas of innocence, community and inner harmony. At the same time, her work responds to ecological and social transformations, reflecting on the fragile balance between humanity, nature and cultural identity.

🔄 In her new work “Share & Save” (2026), communication is explored as a form of intangible cultural heritage. The work unfolds as a circular process in which individual actions influence collective behaviour, while social structures, in turn, shape the individual.

🤖 In the context of an increasingly AI-driven society, Odmaa asks how human nature may transform while we seek to preserve its essential qualities. The work expresses a striking paradox:

“What is preserved must be shared.”

✨ Her ceramic works also investigate the relationship between material and idea. Through spatially structured forms, balance, movement and communication appear not as fixed conditions, but as dynamic processes that are constantly shifting and evolving. The fragile relationship between form and space invites viewers to engage with the work on an intuitive and emotional level.

🇩🇪🇲🇳 As part of the Special Project Mongolia at NordArt 2026, AMPMC implemented an international artist exchange programme in April–May 2026, inviting ceramic artists Sukhburen Narankhuu and Odmaa Uranchimeg, together with sculptor Tuvshinjargal Jamsran, to Berlin.

During their two-month intensive residency at the sculpture workshop of Kulturwerk des bbk Berlin, the artists developed 10 new works specifically for NordArt 2026, making their residency an important part of the project's international artistic collaboration.

🎨 Artist Spotlight: NYAM-OCHIR Oyunpurev / Oyunpurev Nyam-Ochir/
✨ When writing becomes visual expression.

✍️ For Mongolian artist Nyam-Ochir Oyunpurev, calligraphy is more than writing—it becomes a language of line, movement and colour. His luminous ink strokes extend beyond legibility, unfolding into abstract compositions shared by rhythm, gesture and chromatic harmony.

🌿 Bridging tradition and contemporary painting, Oyunpurev works between the structured elegance of calligraphy and the freedom of abstraction. Lines move, intersect and transform, creating dynamic pictorial spaces where writing and painting become one.

🎭 From calm tonal fields to intense expressive accents, his works explore the diversity of human emotion. What begins as script gradually opens into an intuitive visual world, inviting viewers to experience calligraphy not only as language, but as movement, atmosphere and feeling.

🌏 About the artist
Born in 1985 in Mongolia, Nyam-Ochir Oyunpurev studied Fine Arts in Ulaanbaatar and is a member of the Mongolian Artists’ Union. His works have been exhibited internationally, including major exhibitions across Asia and Europe.

For more than 30 years, Mongolian Artist B Nyamkhuu has devoted his artistic journey to preserving and reimagining Mongol Zurag—Mongolia's distinctive traditional painting style. Through his work, ancient cultural knowledge is transformed into a contemporary visual language that speaks across generations.

🌏🌿 Deeply inspired by shamanic beliefs, Mongolia's rich cultural heritage, and the enduring connection between humans, nature, and the spiritual world, Nyamkhuu's paintings invite viewers to explore realities beyond what the eye can see.

✨ In his artwork Ongo, intricate flowing lines weave together human, animal, and plant forms into a vibrant, interconnected universe. Nothing exists in isolation—every element is linked through movement, transformation, and shared energy. The work draws inspiration from Ongo, sacred spiritual beings in Mongolian tradition believed to connect heaven ☁️, earth 🌱, and all living beings 🌍, reminding us that the visible and invisible are part of the same living world.

🎓 Born in 1971 in Mongolia, Nyamkhuu Baatar is both an accomplished artist and dedicated educator. His lifelong commitment to safeguarding and advancing the tradition of Mongol Zurag has earned him international recognition, with exhibitions presented around the world.
