🐒🕷️ SPIDER MONKEY BORN AT PRAGUE ZOO❗️

Prague Zoo has welcomed a baby Mexican spider monkey. The tiny primate is doing well, suckling its mother’s milk and clinging tightly to her abdomen. It can be seen on the Monkey Islands in the zoo’s lower grounds. This Mexican subspecies is threatened with extinction, making it one of the rarest mammals kept at Prague Zoo. It can be found in only three zoos in Europe. In the 21 years since Prague Zoo began keeping them, the monkeys have bred successfully eight times. This year’s addition is the first since 2022.

Outside and inside: Prague Zoo welcomes newborns😍
Frolicking siblings, joeys jumping out of pouches and young animals simply discovering the world: Prague Zoo has welcomed its spring newborns, and its pavilions and enclosures are full of life. This year, the Gobi exhibit has reported its first Przewalski’s horse foal, while Darwin Crater first welcomed a wombat joey and now a long-nosed potoroo—a small feeding specialist—has peeked out from its mother’s pouch. The meerkats are caring for their new baby at the African House, while in the zoo’s upper grounds young takins and camels can also be seen.

PRAGUE ZOO’S YOUNG WOMBAT IS A FEMALE❗️
The little common wombat at Prague Zoo is a female, like her older sister. Last week, the zoo officially presented the second joey of these popular marsupials to the public. She is the second ‘Czech’ wombat to be born in the Darwin Crater exhibit. Actor and presenter Ondřej Sokol, a long-time supporter and patron of Prague’s wombats, was also present. He chose the name Barunga for the joey.

‼️ NEW GIRAFFE SETTLING IN AT PRAGUE ZOO 🦒
A new Nubian giraffe has arrived at Prague Zoo. The three-year-old female arrived in March, having travelled from Leipzig Zoo in Germany. She was born there and was the first calf of Matyáš, a male from Prague. In Leipzig, they named her Niara, which means “with utmost purpose” in Swahili. She may well fulfil this at Prague Zoo, as she will be one of the key breeding prospects for the zoo’s herd in the future. Thanks to the warmer weather, all the giraffes can often be seen in the large enclosure in the zoo’s upper grounds.

A Bearded Vulture Chick after 20 Years‼️
A bearded vulture chick has hatched at Prague Zoo. It is exactly two decades since this mighty bird of prey last bred in Prague. It is the first offspring of the new breeding pair, which comes from a critically endangered Corsican line of bearded vultures. The chick, with its rare genes, is currently staying in the zoo’s off-show facilities and cannot yet be considered fully reared. However, it is in good health, and its parents, despite their inexperience, are proving to be exemplary carers. Prague Zoo was Czechoslovakia’s first zoo to breed the bearded vulture back in 1989. It has since reared eight chicks in total, most of which were released into the wild.

Prague Zoo’s Wombat Joey Has Left Its Pouch‼️
It’s out! Prague Zoo’s baby wombat is setting off on short walks. But it still likes to return to the safety of its mother’s pouch, staying close to her side during its forays. On Saturday, 18 April, actor Ondřej Sokol, a long-time supporter of Prague Zoo’s wombats, will introduce the public to the second baby wombat to be born in the Czech Republic.

Mountain bongos from European zoos are heading to Kenya! 🎉🧡

Four male mountain bongos, one of the world’s most endangered large mammal, are preparing for transport from Europe to Kenya. In the Aberdare Mountains, only a few dozen of these rare animals survive in the wild. The goal is to strengthen the remaining population with genetically valuable individuals. 🌍

📌 The transfer, scheduled for late April to early May, is being organized by Safari Park Dvůr Králové by the authority of EAZA. Five candidates for reintroduction have already arrived at the East Bohemian zoo, where pre-departure quarantine is currently underway. They come from Prague Zoo, Národní zoo Bojnice, Zoo Frankfurt, Zoo Berlín, and Zoo Givskud. ✈️💪

This reintroduction is an excellent example of international cooperation, linking human care with the return of these rare antelopes to the wild. We will keep you updated on the next steps, including the actual transport. 🤝🌿

Prague Zoo Has Bred the Critically Endangered Lord Howe Island Stick Insect❗️
Prague Zoo has seen its first Lord Howe Island stick insects hatch. These are the heaviest flightless insects on the planet. Thirteen little Lord Howe Island stick insects emerged from the first clutch to be laid at Prague Zoo. The luminous green nymphs are now in the zoo’s off-show facilities. Prior to their extinction, these endemic invertebrates were nicknamed “tree lobsters” by the inhabitants of Lord Howe Island. Prague Zoo has been breeding them since 2024.

Caracals Have Settled Down at Prague Zoo❗️
Lithe, powerful and incredibly agile. Visitors to Prague Zoo can now see caracals in the outdoor exhibition of the Feline and Reptile House. These active felines stand out thanks to their characteristic ear tufts. The new pair will hopefully follow on from the breeding successes of the past. After a hiatus of seven years, Prague Zoo is once again keeping this species, which roams the savannas of Africa and Asia.

🐧 A Humboldt penguin came into the world at Prague Zoo. Its parents are an experienced couple consisting of a male, Kulička, and a female, Sněhurkou. The chick hatched on December 14th and is being reared naturally. Nevertheless, the keepers check the chick daily, primarily to keep track of its weight gain.

18 Chicks in 18 Years: Prague Zoo Is a Record Holder in Rhinoceros Hornbill Breeding
Prague Zoo is celebrating a world first. Nowhere else has managed to rear 18 rhinoceros hornbill chicks in as many years. The record is all the more significant following the death of the female Markéta in 2022. It was her maternal instincts that enabled her to rear 17 chicks with two males. After her demise, it seemed impossible to continue this era. Nevertheless, a new female, Sharjah, acquired from the United Arab Emirates, took up her mantle—she has now reared her first offspring in Prague, which is also the first European chick in five years.
