👾 Za hranicemi města času se nachází labyrint, rozklenutá architektura tisíců portálů, občas viditelných, z většiny skrytých, s křehkými mosty, jejichž konstrukce propouští světlo pouze z boku. Zdejší brány se rozletí při pouhém dotyku prstu, anebo naopak nepovolí ani pod největší silou. Procházejí jimi všemožní neznámí tvorové, nemrtvé duše, ba i ten nejdrobnější hmyz. O některých je známo, že vedou k iluzím, zatímco jiné stmelují komunity. Alespoň to tvrdí vypravěč, který ze slov kolemjdoucích tvoří legendy a nové mytologie.

Toto je súfijský příběh o azalábádu, místě před začátkem zaznamenaného času a daleko za jeho nejzazšími limity. Podobně jako on se před námi otevírá i výstava Beyond the City of Time. Svět, v němž se v Galerii Rudolfinum pohybují tvorové Saheje Rahala, utváří nejen budova samotná, ale také architektura českého umělce Tomáše Džadoně.

👾 Beyond the city of time, there is a labyrinth, growing architecture made of thousands of portals, few visible, mostly hidden, with delicate bridges whose structures only let light in sideways. The gates might open at the press of a fingertip or resist the heaviest of forces, used as they are by many unknown creatures, undead souls, or even the smallest of insects. Some have been known to lead to delusion, while others bind communities together. Or so the storyteller says, fabricating legends and new mythologies from the stories of passers-by.

This is the Sufi story of azalabad, the place before the beginning of recorded time and far beyond the edges of its limits. The exhibition Beyond the City of Time unfolds before us in a similar way. The world in which Sahej Rahal’s creatures move through Galerie Rudolfinum is shaped not only by the building itself but also by the architecture of Czech artist Tomáš Džadoň.

👾 The most mysterious stone in the world, journeys into the unknown and beyond

Last night, together with artist Sahej Rahal, curators Edith Lázár and Eva Drexlerová, and CRASH talk moderator Tjaša Pogačar, we explored many corners of the human mind and also touched on the topic of its limits. What is it about the idea of encountering unknown beings that is so frightening to humans? Is the ability to communicate, as we understand it, universally valid? Could there be entities that transcend us and with whom it is impossible to connect? And do you know the story of the Hypatia stone?

👾 Jak se čte Kniha chybějících stránek?

V běžném životě by vás asi absence stránek v rozečteném příběhu zaskočila a možná i trochu naštvala. Co si počít? Nezbývá než složitě hledat jiný výtisk nebo zapojit vlastní představivost. Jaké věci se mohly v propasti zející mezi jednotlivými listy stát?

Sahej Rahal mimo jiné s myšlenkou absence a nevyřčenosti pracuje v sérii maleb nazvaných Kniha chybějících stránek, která před námi rozprostírá podivné imaginárium. Ilustrace, vytvořené energickými liniemi a pigmenty, vyobrazují bizarní rostliny nepříbuzné s žádným pozemským druhem, nebeské ptactvo, chimérické bytosti, postavy podobné džinům… Tato kniha je neúplná, úsečná a vede nás k dobrovolnému polevení v nevěřícnosti, aby mohl vzniknout prostor pro hru mezi skutečností a fikcí.

👾 How to read The Book of Missing Pages?

In everyday life, the absence of pages in a story you’re in the middle of reading would probably surprise you and perhaps even annoy you a little. What to do? You have no choice but to go to the trouble of finding another copy or to use your own imagination. What might have happened in the gaping void between the pages?

Among other things, Sahej Rahal explores the concepts of absence and the unsaid in a series of paintings titled The Book of Missing Pages, which unfolds a strange imaginary world before us. The illustrations, created with lively lines and pigments, depict bizarre plants that don’t bear relation to any earthly variety, celestial birds, chimerical beings, djinn-like figures… This book is incomplete, fragmentary, silent, and leads us to a voluntary suspension of disbelief that allows for analogies and speculation.

Galerie Rudolfinum volá! Do konce aktuální výstavy zbývá pouze týden. Otevřeno máme od úterý do neděle od 10:00 do 18:00, ve čtvrtek až do 20:00. Poslední vstup na výstavu je vždy půl hodiny před koncem otevírací doby. Vstupné je dobrovolné.

Galerie Rudolfinum is calling! There is only one week left until the end of our current exhibition. We are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm, and on Thursdays until 8 pm. Last admission to the exhibition is always half an hour before closing time. Admission: pay what you wish.

All you need to do is have each person place one hand on one of the plates and touch the other person’s hand with the second one. The mysterious being will begin to awaken.

👾 Setkání se Saras

„Z dutého trupu nalezené sochy se pomalu tlačí ven rozpadající se bohyně,“ popisuje Sahej Rahal trochu tajemně své dílo Saras. Toto video potkáte i při návštěvě jeho výstavy Beyond the City of Time. Díky Samsungu, technologickému partnerovi Galerie Rudolfinum, jej můžete zhlédnout na unikátní televizní obrazovce The Frame.

Dílo se může zdát nenápadné, ale stačí se na chvilku zastavit a pozorovat jej. Zdánlivě nehybná soška dýchá! Potlučená tak, že nerozeznáme ani rysy v jejím obličeji, vypadá, jako by ztratila svůj význam. V zemi, odkud pochází, jsou rozbité věci často považovány za špatné znamení a lidé se jich zbavují, aby jim nepřinášely smůlu. Rahal si však nalezenou sošku ponechává a vdechuje jí opět život.

👾 Meeting Saras

“From within the hollow torso of the found idol, the crumbling goddess nudges outward,” Sahej Rahal describes mysteriously his work Saras. You’ll come across this video when you visit his exhibition Beyond the City of Time. Thanks to Samsung, Galerie Rudolfinum’s technology partner, you can watch it on the unique TV screen The Frame.

The artwork may seem subtle and maybe even barely noticeable, but all you have to do is stop for a moment and observe it. The seemingly motionless sculpture is breathing! So battered that we can’t even clearly see the features of its face, it looks as if it has lost its purpose. In the country where it comes from, broken objects are often considered a bad omen, and people get rid of them so they won’t bring bad luck. Rahal, however, keeps the sculpture he found and breathes life into it once more.

A quiet protest against traditions and superstitions? A symbolic reminder that things are often more complex than they seem at first glance? That even what is faded and battered often hides surprising beauty within, and what catches the eye may be completely empty inside? Or…

✐ Trhlina v čase. Užijte si s námi poslední dětskou dílnu k výstavě Beyond the City of Time!

V díle umělce Saheje Rahala se prolínají různé světy a jejich reality – známé se setkává s neznámým, nové se starým, magické s technologickým. Jiné časy, časy dávno minulé i ty, které se nikdy nestaly, prosakují z jeho tvorby do naší skutečnosti.

Během Ateliérovka v neděli 3. května si vytvoříme obraz střetu těchto světů. Nejprve namalujeme místo, které je nám důvěrně známé – může to být náš pokoj, zahrada nebo oblíbené zákoutí. To pak narušíme bránou do cizího prostoru. Jaké tajemství otevře, záleží jen na nás a naší fantazii. Zpoza brány se vynoří neznámá krajina, zvláštní bytosti, znaky nebo objekty, které do našeho světa úplně nezapadají. Vzniknou tak obrazy, které nejsou jen záznamem fantazie, ale mohou působit jako mapy nebo zakódované zprávy z běžně neviditelných míst, která však mohou existovat těsně vedle nás.

✐ A Crack in Time. Join us for the last workshop for the exhibition Beyond the City of Time!

In Sahej Rahal’s work, different worlds and their realities intertwine – the familiar meets the unknown, the new meets the old, the magical meets the technological. Other times, times long past and those that never happened, seep from his work into our reality.

During the Workshop for kids on Sunday, May 3, we’ll create a picture of the clash between these worlds. First, we’ll paint a place that’s familiar to us – it could be our room, a garden, or a favorite spot. We’ll then disrupt it with a gateway to a foreign space. What secrets it reveals depends entirely on us and our imagination. From behind the gate, an unknown landscape will emerge, along with strange creatures, symbols, or objects that don’t quite fit into our world. This will result in images that are not merely a record of imagination, but can function as maps or coded messages from places normally invisible to us, yet which may exist right next to us.

Představit si v půlce února, kdy se otevřela výstava Beyond the City of Time, začátek května? Téměř nadlidský úkol. A najednou zjišťujeme, že už je skoro tady…

Výstava se sice chýlí ke konci (pozor, již 10. května!), ale smutnit ještě rozhodně nemusíte. Naopak! Do Galerie Rudolfinum brzy opět přijede Sahej Rahal a vy budete mít rovnou dvě příležitosti se s ním setkat.

👾 Ve středu 6. května od 18:00 nahlédneme do Světů za hranicemi Města času prostřednictvím Rozhovoru umělce s kurátorkami výstavy Edith Lázár a Evou Drexlerovou. Večerem z cyklu CRASH provede kurátorka Tjaša Pogačar.

Back in mid-February, when the exhibition Beyond the City of Time opened, could we have imagined the beginning of May? It seemed like an almost impossible task. And yet, suddenly, we realize it’s almost here…

The exhibition may be coming to an end (May 10!), but there’s certainly no need to be sad. Sahej Rahal will soon be returning to Galerie Rudolfinum, and you’ll have two opportunities to meet him.

👾 On Wednesday, May 6, at 6 pm, we’ll take a peek into the Worlds beyond the City of Time (Světy za hranicemi Města času.) through a conversation between the artist and the exhibition’s curators, Edith Lázár and Eva Drexlerová. Curator Tjaša Pogačar will guide us through the evening from our CRASH series.

👾 Then, on Thursday, May 7, at 6 pm, join Sahej Rahal and the curators for a Guided Tour to uncover little secrets that might otherwise go unnoticed in the exhibition Beyond the City of Time.

❞ „Umělá inteligence dokáže práci urychlit, ale stále není přesná, takže ji musíte kontrolovat,“ myslí si Sahej Rahal, který sice využívá digitální nástroje, které jsou AI vybaveny, ale tvořivou práci jim nesvěřuje. „Počítač nikdy neudělá to, co jste mu neřekli, aby dělal…,“ pokračuje. „Koneckonců je to věc. ❞ “Artificial intelligence can speed up work, but it’s still not accurate, so you have to check it,” thinks Sahej Rahal, who uses AI-powered digital tools but doesn’t entrust creative work to them. “A computer will never do what you haven’t told it to do…,” he continues. “After all, it’s just a thing. 𓀤𓀥 Kudy se vydat? Koho následovat?

Představte si ty nejtišší průvodce. Vstoupíte do galerie a oni vás místo slov přivítají klidnými, nenápadnými pohyby. Snažíte se vypozorovat, co se snaží říct. Ale promlouvají vůbec k vám, nebo si povídají mezi sebou navzájem? A nekomunikují spíše s bytostmi, kolem kterých se pomalu proplétají? Zatímco přemýšlíte, vše se zrychluje a náhle stojíte před rozhodnutím, kudy vykročit. Jeden z průvodců míří vstříc svítícímu portálu, další se již na opačném konci sálu ztrácí mezi malbami mytických tvorů… Jak se rozhodnete vy?

Performance Ecology of Closeness, kterou vytvořila pro výstavu Beyond the City of Time slovenská choreografka Alica Minar, je choreografií vrstev, rezonancí a rozprostřené pozornosti v rámci galerijního prostoru. 𓀤𓀥 Which way to go? Who to follow?

Imagine the quietest of guides. You enter the gallery, and instead of words, they welcome you with calm, slow movements. You try to discern what they’re trying to say. But are they even speaking to you, or are they talking among themselves? And aren’t they communicating more with the beings they’re slowly weaving their way through? As you ponder, everything speeds up, and suddenly you’re faced with the decision of which way to go. One of the guides heads toward a glowing portal, while another, already at the opposite end of the hall, is disappearing among paintings of mythical creatures… How will you decide?

The performance Ecology of Closeness, created by Slovak choreographer Alica Minar for the exhibition Beyond the City of Time, is a choreography of layers, resonances, and dispersed attention within the gallery space. It unfolds as a network of relationships in constant communication between the human and the more-than-human, the living and the non-living, the present and the imaginary. Take a look at the photos from the performance and let yourself be inspired to wander through these mysterious landscapes on your own.
