A short play.
This is a quirky, heart-felt story about a man and a woman who need to be rescued. Some how, in a strange night at a grocery store, the universe brings Dick and Jayne together and it is up to them to stay that way.
Dick is a comedian who is so unfunny, it is painful. On advice from his manager, he decides he must have a girlfriend in order to be funny and to save his career. Enter Jayne, who runs smack dab into Dick one late night at the grocery store when she’s trying to buy a pregnancy test. Jayne finds out she is knocked up by her as***le (ex) boyfriend Alex who doesn’t love her. High on hormones and pistachio ice cream, Jayne tries to figure out how to take responsibility for her actions while Dick tries to rein her in. Somehow, together, Dick and Jayne Get A Life.
Character Breakdown
DICK (30s) A guy who looks like his name. A comedian who is not funny and who wants to be in a relationship, desperately. He says and does all the wrong things, but has a heart the size of the moon. A true weirdo, funny, whack job that some how is teetering on this side of normal. CAST
JAYNE (30s)
She's pregnant, jobless and an emotional mess. She says and takes things literally, in a quirky sometimes awful sort of way, yet she’s endearing and funny. She walks and talks quickly. Almost too quickly. And if you tell her slow down, she does a 160 and talks like she’s swimming in mud. She’s clueless in a horribly intelligent way. CAST
ALEX (30s)
He’s in jail for a DUI, thanks to Jayne. He’s a seemingly uncaring jerk that doesn’t live up to his responsibilities, but is trying to change his life around. Disheveled, True Religion-wearin’, Range-Rover drivin-type and Jayne’s ex-boyfriend,
GEORGE The prison guard where Alex is being kept. He’s a smart, dumb guy that has people’s best interest at heart, but has a direct Mafioso way of getting his point across. In fact, he may think and act like he’s the Mafia, but he’s very much not.
HARRY (50s/60s) Stocky, annoying and the Comedy Club manager. He has no patience for Dick, and is having an affair with Jayne’s mother, Mary. Unbeknownst to Dick or Jayne.
MARY (50s/60s)
Jayne’s mom, eccentric, like Jayne. She wears pearls and muddy rain boots or clogs and say, a sliver lame’ 60s hot pants suit. She left her family to hike in the Netherlands when Jayne was small because the Universe told her to do it.
STEVE (20s, 30s, 40s)
Dick’s roommate; “Jake of Sixteen Candles” cool. He’s leaving his residency with Dick. Not a jerk, but definitely out of any sort of patience or compassion for Dick. One scene – may double as stage hand and/or play Dude, a guy at the grocery store.
DUDE - (20s, 30s, 40s)
A cool dude at the grocery store. Wears khaki and flip flops. Dick wants to be him, if he could. One scene – may double as a stage hand and/or as STEVE, Dick’s roommate.
STAGE HAND(s)
The stage hands are very much a part of the play. While they wrangle props and set pieces, they act as characters that accent the story...sometimes they are the punctuation to the scene or line of dialogue. Very visible and active. Can be men or women. Interested in seeing Mimes and those proficient in performing without dialogue.
