A funerary monument that has existed since the 1st century BCE with Augustus,
in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, it is dedicated to Thomas Sankara.
Based on the path of the sun, the design of the mausoleum features thirteen tombs arranged in a concentric pattern, each illuminated by an oculus.
The layout follows the arc of the sun, transforming light into an indicator of time and absence.
Each tomb develops vertically, turning memory into architecture.
It is located within the Memorial Park, designed by Kéré Architecture.
The park includes an amphitheater, educational spaces, offices, and a 100-meter-high tower (with a terrace at 87 meters, symbolically recalling the year of the assassination. The revolutionary former president and twelve of his closest collaborators were killed during the 1987 coup).
The mausoleum is built with local laterite and clay bricks, offering excellent thermal performance in the region’s arid climate.
