“Working with old techniques helps students understand how to use the historical equipment and practice in a modern way,”
- says Anders Larsson, lecturer at the Theatre Department of Stockholm University of The Arts in Sweden.

New Canon podcast series episode about the necessity of tangible experience, about understanding history through preserving the old machinery in theatres and learning how it worked, about stage safety, Anders’s professional background and more.

“For the skills of the scenographer, I guess it is important that we get used to this ephemeral and fluid, immaterial way of working in VR and AR. But in fact, design-wise, we get to the same questions: colours, atmospheres, materials.”

Listen to the second episode from our Canon podcast series - this time with Berlin-based scenographer and theatre architecture researcher, and lecturer Franziska Ritter.

We discussed how natural it is to work in VR and AR when working on a production, what merits it can bring to the creative process of scenography and how these technologies approximate the technical theatre history and help us to understand it.
We also discussed a noteworthy concept by Franziska - 1:1 Concert, the most intimate musical experience.

The Prague Quadrennial is an incredible opportunity for theater designers from across the globe to gather, share ideas, display work, learn new skills, and be inspired. However, the logistics of acquiring the resources to travel and to stay in Prague in addition to navigating the myriad of performances, lectures, and workshops can be intimidating. This is especially the case for emerging and early career designers who are considering attending for the first time. This roundtable discussion between PQ veterans seeks to demystify the festival by reviewing the many ways to get involved as well as resources available to help to get there.

Panelists Include: Patrick Du Works, Shannon Harvey, Susan Tsu and members of the US National Design Team

We present to you the Czech artists, who will be a part of the Exhibition of Countries and Regions and the Student Exhibition. ECR will host a visual artist  with his installation Limbo Hardware, which follows up his past exhibition Blink of an Eye. He works with a concept of fragments and static film scenes, layered in a tight connection, evoking unease, void and hopelessness.

Students of .divadelnifakultaamu with their project called Correspondence theatre will represent the Czech Republic in the Student Exhibition. Their exhibition will employ notions of isolation, human contact and audience participation within the framework of correspondence productions assembled by viewers themselves and distributed by the post office staff. The team consists of Tereza Havlová, Anna Prstková, Jakub Šulík, Johana Bártová and Adam Pánik.

What is PQ?

The Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space was established in 1967 to bring the best of Performance Design, Scenography and Theatre Architecture to the front line of cultural activities to be experienced by the professionals as well as the public. The Quadrennial exhibitions, festival and education programs act as a catalyst of creative progress by encouraging experimentation, networking, innovation and future collaborations. PQ aims to honor, empower and celebrate the work of the designers, artists and architects as well as inspire and educate our audiences without whom our work wouldn't make sense.

The Prague Quadrennial received the EFFE award 2015 - 2016 as one of the most trend-setting European festivals.

Since 1967 Prague Quadrennial strives to present performance design as an art form concerned with creation of active performance environments, that are far beyond merely decorative or beautiful, but that are emotionally charged, where design can become a quest, a question, an argument, a threat, a resolution and an agent of change… Performance design is a collaborative field where the artists mix, fuse and blur the lines between various art and other disciplines to search for new approaches and new visions.

The Prague Quadrennial has been organizing wide variety of international projects and activities in time between the main quadrennial events - performances, exhibitions, symposia, workshops, residencies and many educational events to serve as an international platform for exploring the practice, theory and education of contemporary performance design/scenography as an expanded field.
