Wor$t Girl in America is the sound of the post-Daft Punk French club aesthetic absorbed and reprocessed through a Midwestern fever dream, and spat back out with the angular energy of Wet Leg at its most chaotic. Dark, rhythmic, boastful, occasionally ominous, always physical. The intention is to make you move, and for most of its runtime, it does exactly that

There is an air on The Mountain that has not circulated freely since the late Nineties: that extraordinary cross-pollination that once went under the name worldbeat, with the Asian Underground as its most visible outpost but with tentacles reaching into every corner of the planet. It was an energy that the events of September 2001 and the subsequent Western retreat into cultural self-sufficiency effectively sealed off. Damon Albarn, who has spent the better part of three decades instinctively migrating toward whatever the music industry was not doing, has retrieved it and built an entire album around it. Ferrum Sidereum is a mystical and ancestral abduction, set among gears, steam and post-Victorian garments. It sounds ancient, and it is thoroughly contemporary. A holistic mysticism in steampunk guise, a fusion between the sacred geometry of primordial rites and the precision mechanics of an imagined industrial age. The gears, the sonic interlockings, do not merely keep time: they become rhythmic mandalas reflecting the order of the universe, a sonic technology deployed to exalt the interconnection of all things. And the colour is dark. Always dark.
