Laundry formed in 2017 at the University of Oregon, their name taken from the dormitory laundry rooms in which they would play late into the night. Their sound is difficult to nail down simply because it’s always changing, and each of their three albums, from 2018’s funky and p***y The Quandary to the guitar pop-rock focus of last year’s Fast Cars, has a distinct sonic identity. One common thread is danceability. There are very few slow songs in Laundry’s discography, largely because of the importance they place on using live shows as part of their creative process, testing out songs on local crowds in Eugene before even thinking of hitting record.

Together, Kiki Paroissien-Arce, Nik Barber, Riley Somers, and Cal Fenner have created the kind of project that creates the most loyal of fanbases. Laundry made their name as one of Oregon’s must-see live shows and as the opening act for bands like Mild High Club and Ritt Momney. So now with music venues slowly opening up around the country, you may just have to take a trip out there yourself.

Head to the link below to hear five of Laundry’s favorites out of their ever-expanding catalogue. And listen to their new single “Watch TV” wherever you stream your music!

If all you knew of Lia D'Sau was her music, you’d probably be surprised to learn that she’s only 18 years old. And you’d be forgiven for that. Her lyrics explore relationships with a maturity beyond her years, and she displays the vocal control and confidence of a seasoned pro. It’s the kind of talent that begs the question: how high can she fly?

When considering her background, it is not so surprising that D’Sau so quickly developed as an artist. Raised in Tel Aviv, D’Sau grew up surrounded by the sounds of her parents’ indie and R&B influences. Her father was a member of popular Israeli boy band Hi-Five in the ‘90s, and according to D’Sau, he was always very encouraging of her music, and took her ambitions seriously from the get-go. At age eight she started singing, and at fifteen even flew across the Atlantic to attend a music camp in NYC. Around the same time, she began to write her own music, and she released her first official single “Manboy” in June - a synth-heavy R&B track in which D’Sau chronicles the true story of a relationship she had, from beginning to end.

Head to the link below to listen to “Manboy” and check out the five songs D’Sau selected for her Greylist.

Personal Space doesn’t need you to like them, but you probably will anyway. The four-piece indie band out of Brooklyn regularly experiments with irregular time signatures in their songs, and yet somehow they’re always danceable. They write lyrics about recyclables, name drop Marcus Aurelius, and use words like “supine” in their hooks, but just you try and stop yourself from belting it out with them the second time it comes around. If there is one thing that is most remarkable about them, it is how they allow themselves to follow their own sense of musical curiosity while never alienating their listeners.

Made up of Sam Rosenthal, Henry Koehler, Alex Silva and Jesse Chevan, Personal Space released their sophomore album A Lifetime of Leisure in March, via Good Eye Records.

Recorded at the highly-regarded Figure 8 Recording studio in Brooklyn, ALOL features a band that has softened and matured in the four year interim since their first release, Ecstatic Burbs. Rather than the sentimentality of childhood and harsh realities of a post-college adulthood, A Life of Leisure uses a darker, more nuanced palette to paint its portraits of the everyday experiences of disparate millennial characters. “Supine (and feeling fine),” the catchy lead single, is an especially potent examination of listlessness. “Goodbye to a lifetime of leisure,” Rosenthal sings with a voice that can sometimes take on a whispery, Elliott Smith-like quality, “goodbye paralyzed guys masquerading as overachievers.”

If you’re in the area, check out Personal Space playing at Berlin in NYC on Friday, July 23rd!

Name: Linda Hsieh (she/her/hers)

- highlighting humans outside the app, sharing music that resonates.

My relationship to music is complicated. Studying music growing up, music is extremely technical to me and often a source of pressure. It was not until later that I learned to move away from the analytical brain to an emotional connection with music. And when I did, I started to understand what they say about the power of music, how it moves people beyond words. I'm grateful to have found that connection.

Sug Daniels seemingly does it all. She’s a singer, a songwriter, a producer, and she even makes videos on YouTube. But by far her greatest talent is her vulnerability.

Hailing from a rural town in Delaware, Daniels grew up immersed in the musical traditions of a Southern-Baptist church. After experiencing both the joys and crushing isolation that many LGBTQIA+ people experience in more traditionally conservative communities, she left the church but continued to pursue music, first in rap outfit FlowCity, and then in soul/rock band Hoochi Coochi. Now in 2021, Sug is beginning a new stage in her career by releasing her first music as a solo project.

With a sound that takes as much from Hawaiian music as it does from R&B and folk, Sug Daniels and her ukulele defy rigid categorization. “Kintsugi,” her latest single, released only last week, is named after the Japanese tradition of mending broken pottery with gold, and is proof that she can write as searingly about politics as she can about love. “You take money and leave me too tired to fight,” she sings, lambasting the cruel ways in which the American system treats Black women, before extending a hand, adding “but when you need me, I’ll be there.”

For her , Sug shared five songs by five women who inspire her. Head to the link in below to listen!

Complete with a confident sound that brings yacht rock into the present day and a visual aesthetic that is somehow equal parts Wes Anderson movie, college frat house, and ‘80s arcade, Sandy Hawkins feels both familiar and entirely new.

The trio describe themselves as a “boy band” but sonically have far more in common with acts like HAIM and Mac Demarco than they do with One Direction. Their songs have been featured on Spotify’s “Fresh Finds” and “young & free” playlists, and on Nic Harcourt’s “Fresh Squeeze of the Day” on 88.5 FM.

All three band members produce, mix, and sing on all of their tracks, and this camaraderie is evident in the dreamy harmonies of “Original Sins” and in the way that each member is given a turn in the spotlight on “Morning Light.” Their give-and-take relationship also shines through in what is probably their most accomplished work to date, the music video for “Cherry Chapstick.” Over the course of three and a half minutes, the band scooters down sun-bleached LA streets, Tom plays a guitar underwater, and Tiger gets his ear pierced for the first time by Keenan. Complete with two tongue-in-cheek rap verses and Tom’s heavenly Tame Impala-esque falsetto, “Cherry Chapstick” is the kind of song that makes waiting for the full EP to drop almost unbearable. In the meantime, check out Sandy Hawkins’s Remixes EP, which hit the airwaves today.

For their Greylist, Sandy Hawkins chose 15 songs perfect for a lazy July afternoon. Head to the link below to listen now!

Name: Craig Martinson (he/him)

- highlighting humans outside the app, sharing music that resonates.

I've been writing and recording music since I was 5 years old, picking up different instruments along the way. My father and uncle were musicians and I grew up going to their gigs and sitting in on their studio sessions. I cut my first two full length records in high school, wrote and directed a rock opera called Zantalamus after graduating and spent the last decade producing, performing and teaching music in Brooklyn, NY. Music is at the core of every decision, triumph, failure and relationship in my life.

Songs:
Bad Days - Flaming Lips
Heavy On My Mind - Ramona Cordova
A.M. 180 -
Submission (feat. Danny Brown & Kelela) - Gorillaz
Fetch the Bolt Cutters - Fiona Apple
Gun Has No Trigger - Dirty Projectors
MY POWER - Nija

KALLITECHNIS emerged onto the Montreal music scene in late 2016 with single “Talk, talk, talk,” introducing the world to her unique voice and musical sensibilities which continue to evolve with every release. Her songs have landed on various Spotify playlists, including “Chilled R&B,” “aloe,” and “Nu-Funk,” and she has appeared on songs alongside artists such as Pusha T, B***y and the Bass, and slchld. As a singer, songwriter, producer, and dancer, KALLI has garnered acclaim from Complex, Highsnobiety, Okayplayer, Vice, and more-- all while never being afraid to speak her mind.

KALLI is prolific as well, with a work ethic that has produced a single nearly every month for the last two years. The latest of these, “2 Cool,” is a woozy collab with Finnish producer Misha and rapper ES.KAY

Looking for something to celebrate this Friday? Spud Cannon’s got you covered with the release of their third full-length album Good Kids Make Bad Apples via Good Eye Records.

Spud Cannon came to be at Vassar College in 2016, made up of Meg Matthews on lead vocals, Jackson Walker Lewis on guitar, Ari Bowe on keys, Lucy Horgan on bass, and Benjamin Scharf on drums.

The band first caught my attention when I heard “Runaway Strays” off of their sophomore album Squeeze (2018). Their signature brand of upbeat garage pop is infectious -- you instantly want to memorize every single lyric while the band beckons you to the dance floor. Their music has the vibe of the most fun house party you’ll ever be invited to. And this Friday you’ll want to dance along.

Until then, head to the link to listen to their rockin’ Greylist.
