Více-než-lidská zvědavost
2022–2024

řadil do oblasti “jiného”. Jak jsou do procesů návratu k více-než-lidskému společenství zapojeny výzkumy neuroplasticity mozku (nejen lidského, ale i zvířecího), paměť, kreativita, neuro a roboetika a neuroetologie sleduje dvouletý projekt Les. Více-než-lidská zvědavost. Projekt se bude naplňovat prostřednictvím mezinárodního sympozia, uměleckých rezidencí, workshopů, přednášek, kurátorských výjezdů, videorozhovorů, online formátů a skrze antologii textů, dokumentární film a iniciovaná umělecká díla. – 30. července 2023. Program sympozia bude sledovat tři výzkumné oblasti: neuroplasticita a paměť, kreativita, zvířecí mozek a druhismus. Čtvrtou součástí je Dětská lesní skupina, která pracuje s uvedenými tématy pomocí metod přístupných mladším lidem. Sympozium užívá různé umělecké a teoretické formáty a způsoby sdílení: přednášky, panelové diskuze, lesní kino a koncert, krajinné a architektonické intervence, workshopy, kolektivní imaginaci, procházení, skupinové čtení, performance a další umělecké přístupy. Probíhá v otevřeném prostředí na louce a v lese v Orlických horách. Program sympozia bude zveřejněn v květnu a registrace otevřeny v červnu 2023. Projekt je financován z Fondů EHP 2014-2021 v rámci programu Kultura, Evropskou unií – Next Generation EU, Národním plánem obnovy, Ministerstvem kultury, Magistrátem hl. města Prahy, Státním fondem kultury, Office for Contemporary Art Norway (OCA) a městem Oslo. www.fondyehp.cz, www.eeagrants.org

Woods: More-than-Human Curiosity
2022–2024

One part of humankind is dependent on technologies that help us maintain a responsible relationship between our present, past, and future. Another part fears a future in which superintelligence will take over running the world. Through the lens of speciesism, we study how human beings have divided the family of animals, singled themselves out, and put themselves on top. They have also put the artificial intelligence they created into the domain of the “other”. How does research on the neuroplasticity of the brain (not just human, but also animal), memory, creativity, neuro- and roboethics, and neuroethology fit into processes of return to the more-than-human community? This is the subject of the two-year project Woods: More-than-Human Curiosity. The project will be carried out in the form of an international symposium, art residencies, workshops, lectures, travel for curators, video interviews, online formats, an anthology of texts, a documentary film, and newly created works of art. Woods: More-than-Human Curiosity is one of the activities of Woods – Community for Cultivation, Theory, and Art, whose main regular activity is an annual forest symposium. The fourth edition of this interdisciplinary gathering will take place on July 28–30, 2023. The symposium’s program will include three areas of research: neuroplasticity and memory, creativity, and the animal brain and speciesism. The fourth component is the Children’s Forest Group, which addresses these topics using methods accessible to young people. The symposium uses a range of artistic and theoretical formats and methods of communication: lectures, panel discussions, outdoor movie screenings and concerts, landscape and architectural interventions, workshops, collective imagination, walks, group reading, performances, and other artistic approaches. It takes place in an open space in a meadow and in a forest in the Orlické Mountains. The symposium programme will be published in May and registrations will open in June 2023. The property is owned and cared for by the curatorial organization Are, which started Woods – Community for Cultivation, Theory, and Art in 2019. The initiative operates at the intersection of contemporary art, the landscape, human health, and interspecies coexistence. Woods: More-than-Human Curiosity is curated by Zuzana Blochová, Edith Jeřábková, and Tereza Porybná, who are collaborating with people from the fields of art, activism, science, ecology, and permaculture. Katrine Elise Agpalza Pedersen collaborates on the dramaturgy of the programme section dedicated to memory, and anto_nie, Denisa Langrová, Ruta Putramentaite and Alex Sihelsk* collaborate on the section concerning animal brains and speciesism. The forest cinema programme is prepared by Lucia Pietroiusti. The symposium film and video interviews are directed by Tomáš Bojar and Marek Meduna. The project’s partners are the contemporary art institution Kunsthall Trondheim and the residency centres Røst AiR and Ovenecká 33. The project is funded by EEA Grants 2014-2021 under the Programme Culture, the European Union – Next Generation EU, the Czech Recovery Plan, the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, Prague City Hall, the State Cultural Fund of the Czech Republic, the Office for Contemporary Art Norway (OCA), and the City of Oslo. www.eeagrants.org

As UNESCO marks 2026 as the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, Zsófia is spending time at developing her latest video work about shepherd women and building connections with women in pastoralism throughout the Czech Republic.

During her residency, Zsófia has been interviewing and filming with women working in pastoralism across the Czech landscape — listening to their stories while learning about local wool and the challenges surrounding wool washing and processing. Alongside the video work, she is developing spatial installations crafted from this same wool, weaving together the material and narrative threads of these shepherd women’s lives.

Zsófia Szonja Illés (Hungary, 1980) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Budapest whose environmentally and socially engaged practice unfolds across installation art, film, and research. Her work explores the relationships between landscape, rural communities, and local ecological wisdom.
Currently completing her PhD in artistic practice at the Moholy Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME), Zsófia researches the Tisza river flood landscapes, collaborating with floodplain farmers through installation art and film. Her documentary ‘Wild Water Country’ (co-directed with Máté Bartha) has received the MADOK Prize (2024) and the Stana Ethnography Film Prize (2025). Recent exhibitions include her installation ‘Floodforest’ at Budapest Contemporary (2025) and a show at Aluvial Gallery in Cluj, Romania (on view through March 2026). She was an artist in residence at PART ( ) Vienna during fall 2025, and a artist with her ‘Floodforest’ project until June 2026.

Kris Lemsalu's imaginary is populated by hybrid creatures, improbable settings, and exuberant ceremonies. For some time now, the artist has been producing a series of ceramic works that challenge conventions in terms of their representations and motifs, but also in their use of traditional techniques for modeling and glazing. In her contribution to Side Path, Lemsalu brought these elements together in a sort of ritual set around an artificial pond. The unstable and reflective element of water provided the setting for a musical fable in which the artist, accompanied by musician Roman Lemberg, evoked a state of alignment between the eerie and the seductive.

For 𝗦𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵, 𝗟𝗲𝗻𝗸𝗮 𝗩í𝘁𝗸𝗼𝘃á has written a work of the same title, which will be brought to life with a walk through the surrounding meadows and forests. The texts are bound into a small booklet, which will be available at the starting point of the route. Following the written instructions, the walk takes approximately one hour and is only possible during daylight, so we recommend setting out earlier in the day—no later than 7 pm. We suggest taking the walk alone.

𝗟𝗲𝗻𝗸𝗮 𝗩í𝘁𝗸𝗼𝘃á’s primary artistic medium is painting. Occasionally, she also writes texts composed of fragments of poetic images, personal memories, and factual descriptions. Unlike her paintings, her texts are created in response to a specific situation – an event – an exhibition. Lenka’s distinctive minimalist painting is based on the emotional quality of colour shades and the reduction of forms; her work suppresses the difference between the attention given to the depicted motifs and the spaces outside them. In her work paintings and texts represent two different voices.
