Část lidstva se spoléhá na technologie, které nám mohou pomoci udržet zodpovědný vztah mezi naší přítomností, minulostí a budoucností. Jiná část se budoucnosti, ve které superinteligence převezme řízení světa, obává. Skrze druhismus sledujeme, jak lidský tvor rozdělil rodinu zvířat, vyčlenil se z ní a nadřadil se jí. Také umělou inteligenci, kterou stvořil, za

řadil do oblasti “jiného”. Jak jsou do procesů návratu k více-než-lidskému společenství zapojeny výzkumy neuroplasticity mozku (nejen lidského, ale i zvířecího), paměť, kreativita, neuro a roboetika a neuroetologie sleduje dvouletý projekt Les. Více-než-lidská zvědavost. Projekt se bude naplňovat prostřednictvím mezinárodního sympozia, uměleckých rezidencí, workshopů, přednášek, kurátorských výjezdů, videorozhovorů, online formátů a skrze antologii textů, dokumentární film a iniciovaná umělecká díla. Více-než-lidská zvědavost je součástí aktivit společenství pro pěstování, teorii a umění Les, jehož každoročními hlavními aktivitami jsou lesní sympozia. Čtvrtý ročník těchto interdisciplinárních setkání se uskuteční 28. – 30. července 2023. Program sympozia bude sledovat tři výzkumné oblasti: neuroplasticita a paměť, kreativita, zvířecí mozek a druhismus. Čtvrtou součástí je Dětská lesní skupina, která pracuje s uvedenými tématy pomocí metod přístupných mladším lidem. Sympozium užívá různé umělecké a teoretické formáty a způsoby sdílení: přednášky, panelové diskuze, lesní kino a koncert, krajinné a architektonické intervence, workshopy, kolektivní imaginaci, procházení, skupinové čtení, performance a další umělecké přístupy. Probíhá v otevřeném prostředí na louce a v lese v Orlických horách. Program sympozia bude zveřejněn v květnu a registrace otevřeny v červnu 2023. Pozemek vlastní a pečuje o něj spolek Are, který od roku 2019 inicioval vznik společenství pro pěstování, teorii a umění Les, které se zabývá vztahem současného umění, krajiny, lidského zdraví a mezidruhového soužití. Projekt Les. Více-než-lidská zvědavost kurátorují Zuzana Blochová, Edith Jeřábková a Tereza Porybná, které na něm spolupracují s lidmi z oblasti umění, aktivismu, vědy, ekologie a permakultury. Na dramaturgii programové sekce věnované paměti spolupracuje Katrine Elise Aspalga Pedersen a na sekci o zvířecím mozku a druhismu se podílí anto_nie, Denisa Langrová, Ruta Putramentaite a Alex Sihelsk*. Program lesního kina připravuje Lucia Pietroiusti. Režiséry filmu ze sympozia a série video–rozhovorů jsou Tomáš Bojar a Marek Meduna. Partnery projektu jsou instituce pro současné umění Kunsthall Trondheim a rezidenční centra Røst Air a Ovenecká 33. Woods: More-than-Human Curiosity
2022–2024

One part of humankind is dependent on technologies that help us maintain a responsible relationship between our present, past, and future. Another part fears a future in which superintelligence will take over running the world. Through the lens of speciesism, we study how human beings have divided the family of animals, singled themselves out, and put themselves on top. They have also put the artificial intelligence they created into the domain of the “other”. How does research on the neuroplasticity of the brain (not just human, but also animal), memory, creativity, neuro- and roboethics, and neuroethology fit into processes of return to the more-than-human community? This is the subject of the two-year project Woods: More-than-Human Curiosity. The project will be carried out in the form of an international symposium, art residencies, workshops, lectures, travel for curators, video interviews, online formats, an anthology of texts, a documentary film, and newly created works of art. Woods: More-than-Human Curiosity is one of the activities of Woods – Community for Cultivation, Theory, and Art, whose main regular activity is an annual forest symposium. The fourth edition of this interdisciplinary gathering will take place on July 28–30, 2023. The symposium’s program will include three areas of research: neuroplasticity and memory, creativity, and the animal brain and speciesism. The fourth component is the Children’s Forest Group, which addresses these topics using methods accessible to young people. The symposium uses a range of artistic and theoretical formats and methods of communication: lectures, panel discussions, outdoor movie screenings and concerts, landscape and architectural interventions, workshops, collective imagination, walks, group reading, performances, and other artistic approaches. It takes place in an open space in a meadow and in a forest in the Orlické Mountains. The symposium programme will be published in May and registrations will open in June 2023. The property is owned and cared for by the curatorial organization Are, which started Woods – Community for Cultivation, Theory, and Art in 2019. The initiative operates at the intersection of contemporary art, the landscape, human health, and interspecies coexistence. Woods: More-than-Human Curiosity is curated by Zuzana Blochová, Edith Jeřábková, and Tereza Porybná, who are collaborating with people from the fields of art, activism, science, ecology, and permaculture. Katrine Elise Agpalza Pedersen collaborates on the dramaturgy of the programme section dedicated to memory, and anto_nie, Denisa Langrová, Ruta Putramentaite and Alex Sihelsk* collaborate on the section concerning animal brains and speciesism. The forest cinema programme is prepared by Lucia Pietroiusti. The symposium film and video interviews are directed by Tomáš Bojar and Marek Meduna. Lecture by 𝗘𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗮𝘂𝗯𝗲𝗿

From place and land situated practices of Indigenous communities, we know: the question is not whether humans live on this planet, but how. Lyla June Johnston captures this principle precisely: “We did not follow the buffalo. They followed us.” Through deliberate burning and grazing techniques, First Nations created and kept open grasslands — habitats in which a multitude of species could flourish. What does this mean for the European context?

𝗘𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗮𝘂𝗯𝗲𝗿 is a cultural and social anthropologist whose research focuses on Romani communities in Europe as well as semi-natural grasslands. For several years now, her long-standing ethnographic research has found expression in ethnographic-ecological walks – a practice that brings anthropology into dialogue with neighbouring disciplines such as ecology and art.

Somatic exercise workshop with 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿 and the 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽

Barbara Gamper will reactivate a textile fish—over 20 meters long—created by 𝗘𝘃𝗮 𝗞𝗼ťá𝘁𝗸𝗼𝘃á (Eva Kotatkova) during her residency with BAU in 2025 as part of the Pastoral Twilight project. Barbara will guide the participants through exercises attuned to the breathing of more-than-human beings. Taking the fish as a point of departure, the workshop will unfold into a collective exploration of how organs such as the heart and lungs pulse, expand, and contract in their own rhythms, inviting participants to inhabit these movements through small, shared choreographies.

𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿 () is an Italian interdisciplinary artist from South Tyrol based in Berlin, working across movement, somatics, performance, moving image, audio storytelling, and textiles. Her research centers on the politics of embodiment, seeking to advocate for decolonial and q***r feminist thinking and practices through somatic movement workshop formats in art, education, and activism.

Early morning walk focused on observing natural phenomena and local birds, mostly in silence and with attentive presence.

𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗝𝗲řá𝗯𝗸𝗼𝘃á is a curator of Woods – Community for Cultivation, Theory, and Art and the PLATO City Gallery of Contemporary Art in Ostrava. She lives here in Woods.
𝗚𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘀 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗸𝘂𝘀 (Gediminas Venckus) studied cinematography at the Vilnius Academy of Music and Theatre and is currently working in visual arts, focusing mainly on woodworking. He also practices birdwatching.

The lecture part will focus on diverse grass communities which have developed thanks to different modes of pasture. The workshop part will consist of botanical observation of a section or transect of a meadow and/or pasture and will culminate in a concluding discussion.

How are meadows different from pastures? Which grazing animals are suitable for which purposes? What were some of the local historical modes of pasture? What are its contemporary forms and what problems can they bring? Is pasture always ideal for the management of endangered grass communities and species associated with them?

After a brief introduction to these issues, we will try to identify, compare, and describe different parts of a pasture/meadow.

Collective investigation with the 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘁𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗮 group

A herd has gone missing, and all participants are invited to join the search—not only for the animals, but also for whoever or whatever is responsible for their disappearance. Through collective investigation, the presentation of evidence, and the making of arguments, we will trace not only the animals that keep the pasture from becoming overgrown with forest, but also the diverse relationships among the many communities that together constitute the larger society of the pasture. Avoiding frontal modes of knowledge transmission, we will learn through experience and engage in a shared sensory exploration of the pasture.

Sensory workshop – practice of wandering with 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻 – 𝗡𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹

Land care is people care and people care is landcare. We will join a shepherd on a sensory journey into our inner landscape. For this experience, Lise will bring elements from her herding work in Denmark and create a soft space to be held, to ground our bodies in the land, and to receive. Afterwards, we will sit together for an extended moment with a cup of herbal tea made with heather and other flowers.

𝗟𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻 () is an artist and shepherdess working in close relation with the heathlands and fjord landscapes of western Jutland. Her daily practice of herding sheep in open landscapes contributes to the conservation of heathlands, the protection of cultural heritage, and the increase of biodiversity.
The 𝗡𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 invites humans back into this landscape and trains a new generation of shepherds. Participants are invited to join the flock, practice presence, ground themselves in the land, and experience human–animal–plant symbiosis. 💧🧶🐑 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙈𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙤𝙬 𝙒𝙤𝙤𝙡 𝙏𝙖𝙥𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙮

Wet felting workshop with 𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼_𝗻𝗶𝗲

𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼_𝗻𝗶𝗲 will introduce the basic technique of wet felting, through which a meadow collective artwork will emerge in the form of a wool tapestry. While working, we will become familiar with the story of wool—from the flock of sheep, through grazing, shearing, and washing, to the processed wool top. From the story of the Golden Fleece, we can learn a great deal about our relationship to land, animal husbandry, consumerism, tradition, and labour.

𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼_𝗻𝗶𝗲 (.jednotka) is an artist, game designer, educator, facilitator, and member of the Pastvina group. Their work engages themes such as folklore, monstrosity, ecology, and herbalism. They work with narrative mechanics of role-playing games, 3D, game engines, immersive sound, and other methods of creating communal (non)physical spaces. They focus on miniature making and lead workshops and educational programmes.

Workshop with 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗛𝘆𝗸𝗹𝗼𝘃á

At the rigid heddle loom workshop, you will weave a decorative ribbon or belt from sheep’s wool and learn simple patterning techniques. Weaving on a rigid heddle loom is an ancient and straightforward craft that naturally calms the body and mind while awakening your creativity.

𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗛𝘆𝗸𝗹𝗼𝘃á (Michaela Hyklova-Vlákna života) was born in the Valašsko region and has always felt deeply connected to its landscape. She is dedicated to traditional crafts and offers courses, therapy, and shared creative experiences at Vlákna života (“Threads of Life”), a healing studio in Vsetín. She spent an extended period in France, which profoundly influenced her life. There, she met a woman who worked as a sheep shearer and who introduced her to sheep farming, cheesemaking, and the craft of sheep shearing.
