We have surveyed some final year students at Colleges of Art and fashion in South Bohemia about women in the art world. Here is a selection of questions and their answers. They have not been censored and do not necessarily reflect our opinions (project editors).
Q) Must women be naked to get into a museum?
A) This battle for female equality is almost behind us. You
can hardly find anybody with such old-fashioned opinions in our generation.
A) Not really.
A) A good rule.
A) Yes.
A) No, they should be be wearing evening dress.
A) Not nowadays.
A) No, but they should stay in the kitchen 😀
A) Nowadays, there exist organizations to promote women, so no ....
A) No
A) Well, if I turned up naked, they would regard me as a work of art and would throw me out.
Q) Why are women not represented in museums, galleries and auction houses to the same extent as men?
A) They have to take care of the kitchen.
A) They aren´t as assertive.
A) They aren´t capable
A) Nowadays there are more and more women.
A) Patriarchy.
A) I really haven´t a clue. Does it really matter? Maybe they don´t create as many artworks.
A) Due to the long history of prioritizing men. Nowadays there aren´t any such prejudices against women any more.
A) They aren´t as pushy.
A) They weren´t considered.
Q) Why haven´t so many women in history been regarded as excellent artists?
A) They weren´t promoted as much as men.
A) They weren´t as recognized/sought out as men.
A) Patriarchy.
A) Probably because of their position in society.
A) I don´t know.
Q) Three world museums, British Museum (1753), Louvre (1793), Metropolitan Museum of Art (1870) have never had a female director. Why?
A) Not for long now.
A) It is only a question of a couple of years until this tradition gets broken.
A) What do I know?
A) Men are better directors.
A) Old museums, things are changing today.
A) We´re probably slow-witted.
Q) Should art institutions have of quotas for women in leading positions?
A) Why not, if the woman is capable.
A) Today women are more or less equal with men, if they are capable, they get hired.
A) If there is a choice between a qualified man and a qualified woman, the woman improves their image.
A) No, but quotas for capable people? YES.
A) Whatever. It´s all the same to me.
A) Why not?
A) Yeah, women know best how to command.
