Retrospective Painting Exhibition at Gloria Gallery on the Opening night with an introductory address by Ms. Christiana Megalemou.

Gloria Gallery presents an exhibition dedicated to the Cypriot painter and iconographer Paris Sivakas (1959–2018), honoring his memory and artistic legacy eight years after his untimely passing.
Bringing together works from different periods of Sivakas’ creative journey, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to appreciate the breadth of his artistic exploration. It includes paintings, still lifes, portraits, mixed-media compositions, and examples of his work in Byzantine iconography, highlighting his enduring dialogue with the Greek and Mediterranean artistic tradition.
Born in Nicosia in 1959, Sivakas studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts under Dimitris Mytaras, Yannis Moralis, Panagiotis Tetsis, and Nikos Kessanlis. His work is distinguished by precise draftsmanship, a restrained palette, subtle tonal transitions, and a poetic atmosphere that transforms everyday objects and human figures into vessels of memory, nostalgia, and contemplation.
Deeply influenced by ancient Greek art, the Byzantine tradition, and particularly the Fayum portraits, Sivakas developed a distinctive visual language that combined figurative representation with symbolism and existential reflection. During the later years of his career, he devoted himself extensively to Byzantine iconography while continuing to experiment with new materials and forms of expression.
Throughout his artistic career, he held solo exhibitions in Athens and Nicosia and participated in important
group exhibitions in Cyprus and Greece. His works are included in public and private collections, including the State Gallery of Contemporary Cypriot Art.

The exhibition was introduced by sculptor Panayiotis Passantas. A poetic soundscape performance was presented by Maria Kouvarou, whose poetry accompanies the artworks throughout the exhibition.
The exhibition includes sculptures, constructions, as well as wall-mounted and floor installations, forming a multilayered visual environment.
The works address violence not as a momentary event, but as an experience inscribed upon the body and memory. The narrative does not adopt an aggressive tone; instead, through a poetic approach, it becomes a vehicle for emotions of sorrow and loneliness, inviting the viewer into a process of inner reflection.

Theme:
Violence, on both a personal and social level, lies at the core of the artist’s visual inquiry. The works aim to raise public awareness by bringing attention to issues that often remain unseen or unspoken.
The artist works with stoneware clay, paper clay, rusted iron and metal sheets, found objects, and
plexiglass display cases. These materials both contrast and converse with one another, creating images that evoke dark and often silenced experiences. Poems by Maria Kouvarou accompany the works,
intensifying the emotional experience and transforming the viewing process into an inner journey.
At the same time, visitors’ imprints, recorded with pigment on sailcloth canvas, form a participatory installation that reinforces identification with the exhibition’s theme.
The experience culminates in a crucial question addressed to the viewer:
Have I been abused, or have I abused?
“I believe that every human being, from birth until the end of life, inevitably experiences some form of violence.”
