Delivering Views Chapter 11
“From Cyprus With Love” is the eleventh installment of “Delivering Views.” Visual artists and creative writers—from Cyprus or associated with the island—pair up to define “Cyprus” on their own terms for touristic consumption in the form of postcards. The project revises the popular touristic image of Cyprus comprised primarily of sun, sand, and sea, showcasing instead the diversity of the contemporary colonial and postcolonial lived experience in Cyprus by residents of Cyprus themselves. We welcome submissions of: a) visuals and b) short creative writing text (excerpts from longer pieces are fine) written or translated in English, which address aspects of the contemporary Cypriot experience. We wish to familiarize Cypriots and non-Cypriots with the diversity of the island’s Anglophone writing and visual art perspectives. We wish to share stories and perspectives that have been largely ignored or silenced within hegemonic discourses on the island. We wish to present a sense of collective identity not based on traditional conceptions of belonging, religion, ethnicity, gender, language, or power. We wish to negotiate the island’s traumatic history with a dedication toward recovery from trauma, love, and empathy. We wish to subvert the island’s limited touristic representation. All accepted pieces will be featured in a perforated booklet of postcards. The pairing of visuals with written text will be curated by the editors. Deadline: 1 September 2016 at 18:00.
