Stelios Ilchuk shares some notes and sketches of his screenprints currently available on our online shop 👀

‘Heavy Hand: Viscous Gambit’: Blind and swollen with pride, a deal is made. The heavy hand is sipping the viscous fluid of his brother. The merchants gain everything, and the deal is a sham. A botched bargain is their only sustenance. The cow sees through it but is in no position to interfere, burdened with its own mortality, yet also finding this quite mundane.

‘Heavy Hand: Sphinx Rider’: Locked in a stare-down, the severed head awaits its trial. As the rider sees an opportunity, the sphinx holds onto it and bargains with the serpent. No words are said, and the heavy hand acts as the interim. The rider — a mortal — has become impatient. There’s no time to trifle in a dispute between gods; life’s too short.

In this series of drawings Chrysanthi Koumianaki is concerned with how signage can structure human movement. She takes her inspiration from the ‘tools’ installed in the urban fabric to ensure optimisation of human behaviour in urban mechanisms. The traffic signs, trees and metal bars that one encounters on their walk are translated into abstract symbols by the artist, almost conveying a new language. These prints are scores to be interpreted in choreographic movements or read like poets or sung like songs.

🔺▫️ 🔹

The starting point of these works was Koumianaki’s participation at the exhibition Driftwood, or how we surfaced through currents, curated by Evelyn Simons in collaboration with Fondazione Prada that took place in several empty shops in Exarcheia in Athens. The artist provided the visitor with drawings from the same series of works that worked as an instrument for navigating the exhibition, creating an alternative map of the area. In their turn these drawings were reclaimed by the human body when contemporary dancer Pavlina Andriopoulou captured them in a set of choreographic movements, providing the source material for Koumianaki’s final set of metal signs which are playfully reminiscent of the ones advertising the local shops.

Chrysanthi Koumianaki’s practice investigates the idea of translation, creating symbolic systems, codings, scores and alphabets focusing on a non-verbal communication. She reconsiders and manipulates rules and methods of a global visual language, creating new narratives which reflect upon different times. Her works suggest dialogues and communication systems. In this way she often collaborates with other professionals such as dancers, actors, architects and musicians who have an active role in each piece. Her main body of work are installations combining different media like sculptures, drawings, prints, video, sound and performance.

Rabindranath X Bhose’s .bhose ‘The Plunge (Apres Le Pendu)’ is an engraved and varnished copper plate. It is titled for the tarot figure of the Hanged Man, or ‘Le Pendu’ in the original Marseilles tarot. They are a figure who hangs upside down, their serene face suggesting they entered into the pose for contemplation. Their power is viewing the world turned upside down and gleaning knowledge from that position.

The plate depicts the moment after the Hanged Man dives into the pool they were suspended above. What remains is the branch they were interwoven with, the ties and fixtures, and the dangling rope that held them. The pool is a bog, a soft muddy water body which is believed to have magical properties. In this imagined scene, the Hanged Man has transcended beyond the contemplative state of dangling and entered into another realm via the transformative properties bog below.
