The Waves Crashing VIMA Art Fair 2026
SERAPIS MARITIME (SERAPIS)

At VIMA Art Fair 2026, SERAPIS MARITIME presented ‘MOTHER TRADE 3 (💋 I ❤️ My Boat)’ (2026), an installation extending a series of public offering gestures first developed for Sharjah Biennial 16.

Modular seating structures were assembled from used clothing transportation bags, fishing ropes, printed fabrics, and other repurposed materials. For The Waves Crashing, the work expanded with locally sourced used fishing nets forming a shaded structure, alongside a large communal table made with materials collected on site.

Rather than existing solely as sculpture, ‘MOTHER TRADE 3’ created a place to sit, gather, observe, and experience the activity unfolding around it — bringing SERAPIS MARITIME’s ongoing exploration of maritime industries, material circulation, and upcycling into the social space of the exhibition.

A series of videos filmed at local boat yards extended the work beyond the physical installation and into The Waves Crashing digital channels.

Louiza Ntourou-Orlof presented ‘To G.K.’ (2016), a short film-letter shot at the end of summer on the Greek island of Amorgos.

The film reflects on limitations and the fragile boundary between reality and the imaginary. A curtain-like cloth moves softly in the breeze, intermittently revealing window bars and glimpses of the world beyond.

Moving between light and darkness, inside and outside, freedom and confinement, ‘To G.K.’ explores how our perception of spatial and temporal limits can continuously shift. The breeze becomes an agent of this uncertainty — alternately concealing and revealing what lies beyond.

Christos Kyriakides presented ‘The lighthouse/comparative planetology’ (2018–ongoing), a sculptural assemblage bringing together objects from the marine and urban landscapes of Cyprus.

A fragment of discarded fish-farming plastic, salvaged from a cruising beach in Limassol, is positioned beneath a streetlight shade retrieved from the old city of Nicosia. Once belonging to very different systems — aquaculture and urban infrastructure — the two objects meet in a fragile architecture of extraction and illumination.

Through their material histories, the work reflects on the commodification of life, surveillance, visibility, and the ways environments are shaped, consumed, and eventually discarded. Both elements also originate from spaces associated with cruising and intimate encounters, introducing another layer of desire and memory into the sculpture.

Suspended between land and water, industry and intimacy, darkness and exposure, the work follows the logic of the wave — repetition, instability, and recurrence.

The Waves Crashing VIMA Art Fair 2026

Stelios Kallinikou presented ‘Certification’ and ‘Film Stills’, two site-specific installations exploring the relationship between public history and personal memory.

‘Certification’ draws on the 1946 British colonial propaganda film ‘Cyprus Is an Island’, isolating and repositioning its opening frame to expose the ways colonial narratives shape what is seen and what remains omitted. In parallel, ‘Film Stills’ presents “The End” titles taken from footage of the artist’s own baptism, transforming fragments of a family archive into reflections on memory, identity, and time.

By bringing together colonial imagery and intimate biographical material, the works reveal how history is constructed through acts of framing, editing, and omission, inviting viewers to question the narratives that continue to shape collective memory.

As part of VIMA Art Fair 2026, VIP guests visited ‘The Holiday Trilogy’ by Christodoulos Panayiotou (), a site-specific installation at the Minerva Hotel in Platres, commissioned by Pylon Art & Culture (.ac)

The visit formed part of VIMA’s programme of curated experiences beyond the fair, connecting audiences with exhibitions and projects across Cyprus.

The Holiday Trilogy remains on view until 30 August 2026.
