Since 2014, our collaborations have continued with individual artists, scholars, and other cultural initiatives. ABOUT US
Sidestreets is an independent, private organization formed in Nicosia, North Cyprus, to generate spaces of creative and critical engagement with language, the arts, and culture in general, by promoting social, cultural and artistic development within local, regional, European,
and international frameworks. In its initial phase Sidestreets set up its headquarters at a prime location in the walled city of Nicosia, with exhibition halls, seminar rooms, multimedia rooms, a library, offices and classrooms. Sidestreets began its intense public activities in October 2007 and implemented them primarily at this location. These included providing high quality Greek and English courses, professional development workshops, and activities designed to raise public awareness of a wide variety of critical local and global issues ranging from environmental concerns and preservation of the cultural heritage, to health and disease prevention, and the rights of marginalized groups. In addition, Sidestreets provided translation (Turkish to English), editing and proofreading services in English for professionals. Other activities included organizing a wide range of exhibitions of cultural creativity (art exhibitions and projects, poetry readings, film screenings and analyses, seminars and round-table discussions with distinguished experts and professionals), hosting an artists/scholars-in-residence program, screening children’s films, hosting film series/retrospectives, and also working on a range of highly successful community initiatives and social responsibility projects, mainly involving children’s educational and cultural development.
*Since 2014, Sidestreets has been in its second phase, with most public activities taking place at different locations, not limited to Nicosia, or even Cyprus. Sidestreets has been active in other collaborative projects for public events, and is more involved independently in specialized long-term research projects for documentaries, books and exhibitions, etc.
