Larnaca Biennale is excited to officially announce its Open Call for artists, that will run until March 31st 2027 !

Artists from around the world are invited to submit their artworks for the upcoming 5th edition, under the theme 'Metatopies : Geographies in Motion'.

The theme was conceived by curators, Niki Papaspirou and Marios Fournaris, and invites artists to develop and submit works which draw inspiration from the concept of shifting as shaped through geological, anthropological, social, political, and historical conditions.

“The world has never existed as a fixed system,” state the curators regarding the 2027 Biennale, “it has been shaped geologically, anthropologically, socially, politically, and historically through continuous shifts: movements of bodies, populations, meanings, territories, and boundaries.

“Today, the conditions that regulate the mobility of people and populations are being reconfigured,” they add, “affecting experiences of space and habitation, while at the same time, the human-driven climate crisis challenges established notions of sovereignty and highlights the need to reconsider our relationship to the land and with the concept of belonging.

Through the outstanding curatorial vision of Sana Lopez Abellan, Along Lines and Traces unfolded across six themes—Textile, Time, Territory, Tune, Touch and Text—bringing together diverse artistic perspectives in an engaging exhibition that invited audiences to reflect on the visible and invisible traces connecting people, places, histories and futures, creating a meaningful cultural experience.

Presenting a journey of creativity, connection, and inspiration from our previous edition.

“The Art Of Together” took place every Saturday during the 4th edition of the Larnaca Biennale “Along Lines and Traces”. Through workshops, exploration, and shared experiences, the program opened a space where young minds could encounter art not just as observers, but as active participants.

Introducing children to art is not simply about learning techniques — it is about nurturing imagination, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the world around them. These programs planted seeds that will grow into respect for artistic expression, cultural awareness, and a sense of community.

As LB4 Curator Sana López-Abellán beautifully expressed:
“Ultimately, when you engage in such a large project as the Larnaca Biennale, what you truly hope for is that the event will have a meaningful impact on the city and its people.
And what better way to create that impact than through future generations: those who will learn the symbolic value of art and, through that understanding, develop respect for artists and their work.
Because when art inspires the young, it shapes a future that values creativity, connection, and community.

Our heartfelt applause and special thanks go to Theodora Andreou Theodora Andreou and Θεατρικό Εργαστήρι "Θεατρόλα", who embraced this project with love, care, dedication and professionalism, alongside her incredible team with Aimilia Andreou and Theodora Challouma

The Larnaca Biennale team announces its thematic focus for the 5th edition in 2027!

"The world has never existed as a fixed system; it has been shaped geologically, anthropologically, socially, politically, and historically through continuous shifts: movements of bodies, populations, meanings, territories, and boundaries. Today, the conditions that regulate the mobility of people and populations are being reconfigured, reshaping experiences of space and dwelling. At the same time, the anthropogenic climate crisis challenges established notions of sovereignty and highlights the need to reconsider our relationship to the Earth and to the question of belonging.

The exhibition “Metatopies: Geographies in Motion” approaches place not as a static point on a map, but as an event, a constellation of relations, flows, and traces in constant transformation. Shifting is understood not only as the movement of populations or the reconfiguration of lines of demarcation, but as extending to regimes of mobility and immobility, infrastructures and passages, memory and trauma, as well as ecological changes that are already reshaping everyday experiences of habitation.

The exhibition proposes an alternative cartography, a process of critical re-mapping, where the external geographies of space intersect with the internal geographies of the body, desire, and belonging. In this light, part of artistic research can be viewed as a contemporary experience of the situationist concepts of dérive and détournement, creating related practical methods of recording and experiencing space as a dynamic field for revising reality and shifting it into the background of a collective imagination.

In a world undergoing increasingly rapid and intense change, the notion of “Metatopies” is revisited through contemporary art as a site of dialogue between different places, temporalities, and ways of inhabiting the world."

Η Μπιενάλε Λάρνακας, με ιδιαίτερο ενθουσιασμό ανακοινώνει τη θεματική της 5ης διοργάνωσης για το 2027!

"Ο κόσμος δεν υπήρξε ποτέ ένα σταθερό σύστημα· συγκροτείται γεωλογικά, ανθρωπολογικά, κοινωνικά, πολιτικά και ιστορικά μέσα από διαρκείς μετατοπίσεις: κινήσεις σωμάτων, πληθυσμών, νοημάτων, εδαφών και ορίων. Σήμερα, οι συνθήκες που ρυθμίζουν την κινητικότητα ανθρώπων και πληθυσμών επαναδιαμορφώνονται, επηρεάζοντας τις εμπειρίες του χώρου και της κατοίκησης, ενώ την ίδια στιγμή η ανθρωπογενής κλιματική κρίση θέτει υπό αμφισβήτηση τις καθιερωμένες αντιλήψεις περί κυριαρχίας και αναδεικνύει την ανάγκη επανεξέτασης της σχέσης μας με τη γη και με την έννοια του ανήκειν.

Η έκθεση «Μετατοπίσεις: Γεωγραφίες σε Κίνηση» προσεγγίζει τον τόπο όχι ως ένα στατικό σημείο στον χάρτη, αλλά ως γεγονός, ως ένα σύνολο σχέσεων, ροών και ιχνών που βρίσκονται σε συνεχή μεταβολή. Η μετατόπιση δεν αφορά μόνο μετακινήσεις πληθυσμών ή την αναδιαμόρφωση των γραμμών οριοθέτησης, αλλά εκτείνεται σε καθεστώτα κινητικότητας και ακινησίας, υποδομές και περάσματα, μνήμη και τραύμα, καθώς και σε οικολογικές μεταβολές που ανασχηματίζουν ήδη την καθημερινή εμπειρία της κατοίκησης. Η έκθεση προτείνει μια εναλλακτική χαρτογράφηση, μια διαδικασία κριτικής επαναχαρτογράφησης, όπου οι εξωτερικές γεωγραφίες του χώρου συναντούν τις εσωτερικές γεωγραφίες του σώματος, της επιθυμίας και της ένταξης. Υπό αυτό το πρίσμα, μέρος της καλλιτεχνικής έρευνας μπορεί να ιδωθεί ως μια σύγχρονη εμπειρία των καταστασιακών εννοιών της dérive και του detournement, δημιουργώντας συναφείς πρακτικές μεθόδους καταγραφής και βίωσης του χώρου ως δυναμικό πεδίο αναθεώρησης του πραγματικού και μετατόπισής του στο υπόβαθρο ενός συλλογικού φαντασιακού. Σε έναν κόσμο που μεταβάλλεται με αυξανόμενη ένταση και ταχύτητα, η «μετατόπιση» επανεξετάζεται μέσα από τη σύγχρονη τέχνη ως τόπος διαλόγου ανάμεσα σε διαφορετικούς τόπους, χρόνους και τρόπους βίωσης του κόσμου."

Larnaca Biennale announces its collaboration with Niki Papaspyrou and Marios Fournaris as curators of its fifth edition, which will take place from 13 October to 26 November 2027.

LB Organising Committee:
“Leading the Larnaca Biennale 2027 will be two experienced professionals, two dedicated practitioners in the field of art,” says the Biennale’s Artistic Director, Vassilis Vassiliades.

“Marios Fournaris and Niki Papaspyrou are both connected to Cyprus, each in a different way. Niki’s relationship with the Cypriot art scene is a close one, as she researches and curates the work of Cypriot artists both in Cyprus and abroad. In this context, she served as a member of the jury of the Larnaca Biennale 2023. Marios’s contribution to the Biennale team marks a creative return to his place of origin, bridging his many years of experience in Greece and abroad with his Cypriot identity.”

“The selected theme, which will be announced shortly, draws its inspiration from the roots of the humanities and from their dialogue with the living reality of the present. At the same time, it gives form to a narrative that reaches back to the origins of human civilisation and existence”

Curators' Statement:
“We are delighted to participate as curators of the 5th Larnaca Biennale in a collaboration that we understand as a space of dialogue, research and meaningful exchange. Larnaca, Cyprus and the wider Mediterranean region constitute for us a distinctive meeting point between local experiences and international voices. They also form a field of substantial research-based and theoretical inquiry, where the concepts of displacement, memory, habitation and belonging, as well as the anthropogenic climate crisis, acquire particular historical, cultural and contemporary significance. At the same time, these concepts resonate and are reformulated within a broader global context.
Through the curatorial process, we are interested in exploring how contemporary art can function as a mode of critically mapping our relationships with place, history, communities and forms of coexistence.”

Η Μπιενάλε Λάρνακας ανακοινώνει τη συνεργασία της με τη Νίκη Παπασπύρου και τον Μάριο Φούρναρη ως επιμελητές της πέμπτης διοργάνωσης, η οποία θα πραγματοποιηθεί από τις 13 Οκτωβρίου έως τις 26 Νοεμβρίου 2027.

Δήλωση από την οργανωτική επιτροπή της Μπιενάλε Λάρνακας:

«Στο τιμόνι της Μπιενάλε Λάρνακας του 2027 θα βρίσκονται δύο έμπειροι επαγγελματίες, δύο αφοσιωμένοι λειτουργοί της τέχνης.» αναφέρει ο Καλλιτεχνικός Διευθυντής της Μπιενάλε, Βασίλης Βασιλειάδης.

«Ο Μάριος Φούρναρης και η Νίκη Παπασπύρου συνδέονται και οι δύο, ο καθένας με διαφορετικό τρόπο, με την Κύπρο. Η σχέση της Νίκης με την καλλιτεχνική σκηνή της Κύπρου είναι στενή καθώς ερευνά και επιμελείται το έργο Κύπριων καλλιτεχνών στην Κύπρο και το εξωτερικό. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό διετέλεσε μέλος της κριτικής επιτροπής της Μπιενάλε Λάρνακας του 2023. Η συμβολή του Μάριου στην ομάδα της Μπιενάλε σηματοδοτεί μια δημιουργική επιστροφή στον τόπο καταγωγής του, γεφυρώνοντας την πολυετή του εμπειρία στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό με την κυπριακή του ταυτότητα».

«Η θεματική που επιλέχθηκε και πρόκειται να ανακοινωθεί, αντλεί την έμπνευση της μέσα από τις ρίζες των ανθρωπιστικών επιστημών και του διαλόγου τους με τη ζωντανή πραγματικότητα της επικαιρότητας. Παράλληλα μετουσιώνει μια ιστορία που ανατρέχει στις ρίζες του ανθρώπινου πολιτισμού και της ύπαρξης. Πρόκειται για μια οπτική που προσεγγίζει τα φαινόμενα που διαμορφώνουν τον κόσμο μας τόσο μέσα από τις κοινωνικές και ιστορικές τους διαστάσεις όσο και μέσα από την εσωτερική, βιωματική τους πρόσληψη».

«Η Λάρνακα, η Κύπρος και η ευρύτερη περιοχή της Μεσογείου αποτελούν για εμάς ένα ιδιαίτερο σημείο συνάντησης τοπικών εμπειριών και διεθνών φωνών. Είναι επίσης ένα πεδίο ουσιαστικής ερευνητικής και θεωρητικής προσέγγισης, όπου οι έννοιες της μετατόπισης, της μνήμης, της κατοίκησης και του ανήκειν, καθώς και της ανθρωπογενούς κλιματικής κρίσης, αποκτούν ξεχωριστή ιστορική, πολιτισμική και σύγχρονη βαρύτητα. Ταυτόχρονα, οι έννοιες αυτές αντηχούν και επαναδιατυπώνονται σε ένα ευρύτερο παγκόσμιο πλαίσιο.

Along the 2025 Line and Trace : A Thank You Note from the Larnaca Biennale Team

As the final hours of 2025 slip away, we reflect on the remarkable journey of our 4th edition, Along Lines and Traces—an edition that explored paths drawn, memories preserved, and the imprints that connected artists, visitors, and our community.

This year carried special significance, marking 10 years of continuous work, devotion, and creative resilience from the Larnaca Biennale Team. A decade after from an idea to realisation, the impact speaks louder than words.

Our deepest gratitude goes to Sana López Abellán, whose exceptional professionalism, sensitivity, and attention to detail embraced every artwork and every artist with extraordinary care. Her curatorial vision wove together the lines, traces, and stories that shaped this edition.

To every artist, visitor, sponsor, supporter, partner and creative associate who shared our vision—thank you. Your presence and support transformed this edition into an experience of exploration and connection.

Although the linear progression of time marked its closure, the traces of this edition continue, echoing in future collaborations, ideas, and artistic dialogues. Along Lines and Traces does not end here; it extends forward.

Ένα εξαιρετικό επεισόδιο της σειράς Art in the City από το Γραφείο Τύπου και Πληροφοριών - Press and Information Office της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας, που αποτυπώνει την ουσία και το αποτύπωμα της Μπιενάλε Λάρνακας 2025 μέσα από τους καλλιτέχνες που συμμετείχαν.

"Η Μπιενάλε Λάρνακας μετατρέπει την πόλη σε ζωντανό καμβά.
Καλλιτέχνες από την Κύπρο και το εξωτερικό συναντιούνται στον δημόσιο χώρο, δημιουργώντας έργα που συνομιλούν με την ιστορία, την καθημερινότητα και τους ανθρώπους της πόλης.

The final educational workshop of the Larnaca Biennale children’s programme, the Box of Metamorphosis !

Young artists using play, collaboration, and storytelling, created small stage scenes, transforming everyday items into magical elements, while fostering creativity and freedom of expression.

⭐The outcome of the creations from the six educational workshops is showcased in a collective artistic installation at the first floor of the Municipal Market of Larnaca, inviting the public to interact and continue the ‘journey’ of creation even after the closing of our edition.

Engaging with art from a young age is not merely entertaining; it is a valuable tool for development, nurturing imagination, strengthening self-confidence, and opening pathways to creative thinking. This is why initiatives like this hold special importance for us.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in and supported this beautiful process!

Στο τελευταίο εκπαιδευτικό εργαστήριο Το Κουτί της Μεταμόρφωσης, οι μικροί μας δημιουργοί μέσα από παιχνίδι, συνεργασία και αφήγηση, δημιούργησαν μικρές σκηνές, μεταμορφώνοντας καθημερινά αντικείμενα σε μαγικά στοιχεία, ενώ ταυτόχρονα καλλιεργησαν τη δημιουργικότητα και την ελευθερία της έκφρασης.

⭐Οι δημιουργίες και των έξι εκπαιδευτικών εργαστηρίων ενώθηκαν σε μια συλλογική καλλιτεχνική εγκατάσταση στον πρώτο όροφο της Δημοτικής Αγοράς Λάρνακας και προσκαλούν το κοινό να αλληλεπιδράσει και να συνεχίσει το ταξίδι της δημιουργίας ακόμα και μετά το τέλος της έκδοσης.

Μέσα από αυτήν την εμπειρία, τα παιδιά είχαν την ευκαιρία να εξερευνήσουν, να δημιουργήσουν και να εκφραστούν ελεύθερα. Η επαφή με την τέχνη δεν είναι απλώς ψυχαγωγική˙ αποτελεί ένα πολύτιμο εργαλείο ανάπτυξης, καλλιεργεί τη φαντασία, ενισχύει την αυτοπεποίθηση και ανοίγει δρόμους δημιουργικής σκέψης από μικρή ηλικία. Γι’ αυτό και τέτοιες δράσεις έχουν ιδιαίτερη σημασία για εμάς.

Ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ σε όλους όσοι συμμετείχαν και στήριξαν αυτή την όμορφη διαδικασία!
