Mapping Space That Could Return To Earth Again
at Fábrica de Arte Cubano

PROGRAM
June 2-6, 2015

The Art Present symposium explores intersections between art, architecture and the design of public space in relation to recent developments at the site of the exhibition. The symposium will be held at F.A.C from June 2 - 6, concurrent with the Havana Biennial, and accompanied by a sat

ellite exhibition highlighting major developments in interdisciplinary art research from communities in Cuba, the United States & Canada. Day 1 (June 2):
Multi-use Architectural Initiatives & Shared Community Spaces in Peripheral Places;
Presentations by curators, administrators and artist-organizers who spearhead multi-use architectural initiatives at major academic institutions, support contemporary art activity in peripheral communities, and host art exhibitions in the privacy of their own homes. Participants explore ideas on how the architectural restructuring of the site of exhibition extends into the organization of other shared spaces in public and private domains. How do the intersections between art and architecture, socialization and the critical discourse therein actually change the way we engage with one another in space? How do we talk about an extended idea of architecture, or design, in order to think about the infrastructures we build for ourselves. Day 3 (June 6): Open Dialogue Workshop. Cuban, Canadian and American contributors participate in live conversation and debate open to the public, to discuss ideas for a forthcoming exhibition series in an unfinished building in Havana, during October of 2015. Satellite Exhibition: The Art Present Symposium will be accompanied by a temporary exhibition at a satellite art space in the home of Solveig Font Martinez, F.A.C. Curator and main facilitator of the symposium.

ARTE NO ES FÁCIL (2008-2014) is a self-reflexive artwork based in creating relationships beyond pictures between Cuba and the U.S. through the manifestation of art. The current phase of the project is a three-week exhibition series exploring public presentation as a means of creating a more expansive discussion about art and political realities. Collaborative works produced by pairings of emerging artists from Havana and Chicago will be presented at Links Hall in Chicago from January – March 2012. For more information about the artists and the exhibitions visit www.artenoesfacil.com

The project seeks to create a two-way passage for dialogue, collaboration, information and presence between our two countries by establishing connections between artists separated by location and context, yet sharing an interest in form, content or strategy. ARTE NO ES FÁCIL is a project created by Danielle Paz and Marilyn Volkman, produced in collaboration with Amor Pirata

"La Piña Coronada" was created as a decorative flag for TRQPITECA, a dance party in Chicago co-founded by the artist, also known as DJ CQQCHIFRUIT, and their partner, DJ La Spacer. The flag is intended to celebrate the intersection of Tropical and Q***r Identities.

A week ago today Art Present hosted a symposium, Mapping Space that Could Return to Earth Again, in Havana, Cuba. Artists and cultural workers came from the US, Canada, Qatar, and Cuba to talk about their work in the support of art and life. The symposium could not have happened without the amazing curatorial support from Solveig Font and the wonderful creative team @ Fabrica de Arte Cubano. Also, the biggest love for Susana Pilar DM and Duniesky Martin, whose organizational efforts in Havana were the support that made it happen, whose friendship means the world to me.

Oh and did I mention…. that along with a stellar presentation of their work in Chicago, Chances Dances punctuated the event with a dance party like NO OTHER. Screams of, “otro mas,” echoed from the crowd at 2:15am!

While these photos can not nearly express the incredibly diverse experiences of this project, symposium and trip, they do show just a little bit of the mayhem. Thank you to everyone involved, all the artists and thinkers that could come, those participating remotely, and those will join us for the exhibitions.

As always, I feel so extremely grateful that I get to work alongside Marilyn Volkman to propel this project forward. I never cease to be amazed by you, in all things.
