Župa Župa

Župa Župa ŽUPA ŽUPA Župa Župa is a reviving project of the “steamboat Župa” through interventions of artists and activists, and socio-cultural events.

It takes place on and under the boats deck. The project is gathering activists, architects, artists, locals, and all the other parties interested in the new role of the boat as a socio-cultural venue, but also for its opening for public visits, as well as for the boat's protection from the further decay.

Župa Župa is a grass-root initiative under the lead of Urban Incubator Association in coopera

tion with Urbane Experimente e.V. Kassel and the support from institutional partners Cultural Centre Parobrod, Museum of Science and Technics and Goethe-Institut Belgrad. The project is able to shape the cultural landscape of Belgrade by turning in 2015 into the first and only cultural and scientific hub on the Rivers Sava and Danube in Belgrade. Welcome, at your own risk!

Una, which was the original name of this ship, was built in 1913 in a shipyard in Budapest, formal Austro-Hungarian Empire, to serve the navy. During WWI it served as a warship in an attack on Belgrade. The Belgrade defence managed to sink her. After a couple of years the boat was hauled out again and sent back to Budapest for repair. Una was quite inactive until WWII when she was seized by Soviet troops, which transformed this elite battleship into a mine-sweeper. In a couple of years her destiny was sealed by a mine she activated near Old Slankamen on the Danube river. The Yugoslav River Shipping agency raised her from the deep in 1945 and refused an offer by the Hungarians to repair her and make part of their museum exhibition. Since then, the ship bears the name Župa. Last time it was used at the beginning of the 1970´s. Today, Župa is located on the left bank of the Sava River, 500 meters from mouth with Danube, and in very bad condition.

The project „ŽupaŽupa” will be realized by the collective “Urbane Experimente e.V.” and the Kassel Faculty of Architecture. Urbane Experimente e.V. Kassel is a association that works with different urban spaces in a experimental way of use. Since may 2014 members of the collective, residents, artists, students and guests spent their time together on Župa. With actions, interventions and workshops we are building a “Survival Structure” that will be the base on the Župa for a visible multipurpose structure to connect. We will contribute to further a long term establishment on the Župa as an open platform for different social, artists and cultural projects.

Our new project in the Spanish House - YOU are invited to stay with us during the next months when we will work together on further projects.

The project BÄÄÄM - Urban experiments at Sava riverside in Belgrade - concerns the spatial qualities that the Spanish House offers. From May till August 2015 we wish to „activate“ the building through exploration of the specificities and further to alter the perception of the building by our activities. We would like to integrate the fact that there is a huge amount of ground water in the basement as well as there is no roof which means that there is quite a challenge due to the heat typical of Serbian summers. All of these circumstances are inspiring us and stimulate our ideas in regard to the usage of the Spanish House.
Also our core motives of the project, openness and permeability to the public sphere, will refer to the state the building is currently in but we have also some further questions in our mind:

How are the inner and the outer parts related to each other? What is the input the house gives to the city and vice versa? What kind of effect do our actions have on human communication? What is the impact on the urban context? What is the scope of our project?
Besides the practice work on the Spanish House, we will as well observe the interactions between our activities and the reactions we get from the people.
In cooperation with an interdisciplinary team formed by students and experts from architecture, urban planning, landscape planning, electro- technics and arts we would like to act as a kind of a transformers get agent to give new impulses for the development of the site through our experimental way of space transformation. The interdisciplinary nature of the team and the heterogeneous interests of the participants for the city will shape the project. We will take up quarters in the Spanish House for three months to make acquaintance with it and to reform the things we discovered by our actions and to create space for epiphanies which could be experienced every moment in a new way.

The conceived project will be realized during the summer of 2015 in Belgrade and we will cooperate with different actors, collectives, and institutions. We are inviting all interested people to get mesmerized with us by the potential of the place and to react to it actively in a creative and artistic way, this could also include musical, dance or film performances as well as architectural actions. The superior task is to create a vibrant and active network of actors around the Spanish House who have a long-term interest and enthusiasm to vitalize the side.
