Unraveling of the Fall

Through the prism of symbolic fragments of architectural forms domes, chimneys, and industrial towers Branislav Nikolić explores elements that in his work are never merely objects representing the contemporary world. They simultaneously act as bearers of the fragility of systems, ideologies, and values.

At the center of the gallery space lies a monumental black dome, burned and collapsed, severed from its original function. Once the apex of a church structure, shaped to rise above and protect, it is here transformed into an object without support
a body that has lost its verticality. Within this loss of height, in its physical fall, lies the key to interpreting the exhibition. The dome becomes a metaphor for the collapse of authority and values that for decades, even centuries, were considered stable, essential, and almost untouchable. What remains visible here is only its echo: an architectural form reduced to a monumental drawing. The burned structure stands as a testament to former beauty and elevation almost always perceived from below, unreachable to touch leaving an impression of sanctity, patronage, and protection.

Nikolić’s work has always been in dialogue with the urban landscape, industrial remnants, and the logic of consumption. His earlier works, inspired by factory chimneys those vertical pillars of modernity already carried an internal tension between growth and decay, between the idea of progress and its ecological, social, or economic consequences. In his installations, the chimney functioned as a sign of production but also of extremity, combustion, exhaustion, and cycles approaching their breaking point...
