godine, Bitef (Beogradski Internacionalni Teatarski Festival) je neprekidno pratio i podržavao najnovije pozorišne tendencije. Rastući i razvijajući se, postajao je jedan od najvećih i najvažnijih evropskih festivala. Već više od četiri decenije svog postojanja Bitef prevazilazi sve političke i kulturne barijere i uspešno ide u korak sa burnom evolucijom pozorišne umetnosti. Zbog toga istoriju Bit

efa možemo nazvati istorijom savremenog teatra. Bitef je jedan od retkih festivala koji obuhvata kako eksperimentalne, tako i tradicionalne forme. Revolucionarnih šezdesetih i sedamdesetih godina, gledaoci su imali priliku da vide neke od najhrabrijih scenskih eksperimenata koji su vodili ka razaranju dramske forme, ali takođe i značajna klasična ostvarenja, kao i predstave tradicionalnog orijentalnog teatra. Tokom osamdesetih i devedesetih, Bitef je predstavio najviše domete postmodernog teatra i plesa. Čak i u vreme političko-ekonomske krize i embarga, Bitef je uspevao da promoviše najviše kulturne vrednosti i dovede u Beograd neka od najvećih imena svetske izvođačke scene. U prvoj deceniji XX veka Bitef prikazuje nova i inovativna dostignuća svetskog 'mejnstrima', predstave postdramskog i neverbalnog scenskog izraza, kao i one realizovane uz pomoć novih tehnologija, otvorivši tako vrata virtuelnoj stvarnosti 'sajber' teatra. Tokom svih ovih godina, Bitef je sačuvao svoje mesto u porodici najznačajnijih svetskih festivala. Za kontinuitet i kvalitet njegovih nastojanja, Evropska fondacija "Premio Europa per il Teatro" je 1999. godine Bitefu uručila Specijalnu nagradu. Umesto opširnog izlaganja istorije Bitefa, dovoljno je samo nabrojati imena umetnika koji su u proteklih 40 godina, zahvaljujući ovom festivalu, posetili Beograd. Neki od njih otkriveni su upravo na Bitefu, dok je za druge ovaj festival bio još jedna u nizu potvrda njihovog umetničkog značaja i vrednosti. Since its founding in 1967, Bitef (Belgrade International Theatre Festival) has continually followed and supported the latest theatre trends. Growing and developing, it became a high-scale, globally relevant European festival. For more than four decades of its existence Bitef transcends all political and cultural barriers and manages to keep up with the tumultuous evolution of performing arts. Therefore, the history of Bitef we could call history of contemporary theatre. Bitef is one of the few festivals that includes both experimental and traditional forms. Durign the revolutionary sixties and seventies, the audience had the opportunity to see some of the bravest theatrical experiments that led to the destruction of the dramatic form, but also important classical works, as well as performances of traditional oriental theatre. During the eighties and nineties, Bitef introduced the highest reaches of postmodern theatre and dance. Even in a time of political and economic crisis and the embargo, Bitef was able to promote the highest cultural values and bring some of the biggest names in the performing arts scene to Serbia. In the first decade of the twentieth century Bitef displays the new and innovative developments of the world's 'mainstream' post-dramatic performances and nonverbal theatrical expression, as well as those carried out with the help of new technologies, thus opening the door to virtual reality 'cyber' theatre. During all these years, Bitef kept its place in the family of the most important festivals in the world. In 1999 the European Foundation "Premio Europa per il Teatro" presented the Special Award to Bitef for continuity and quality of its efforts. Instead of an extensive history of the Belgrade International Theatre Festival it is enough to list the names of artists who in the past 48 years, thanks to this festival, visited Belgrade. Some of them were discovered at Bitef, while for others, this festival was yet another confirmation of their artistic significance and value.
