From La Fortuna with Love: Can You Help Identify This Incredible Costa Rican Beetle?
Just had an incredible encounter in the La Fortuna rainforest of Costa Rica! 🇨🇷🌳 We stumbled upon this striking longhorn beetle and was immediately captivated by its unique appearance.
Based on my research, I believe it's a Lagocheirus araneiformis, also known as the flat-faced longhorn beetle. These Neotropical beauties typically measure around 20-28 mm, boasting a brilliant gray-brown camouflage and mottled pattern that helps them blend perfectly with their surroundings. They're quite common in areas like the Osa Peninsula and are known for boring into plants like cassava, sugar cane, and papaya.
While I'm fairly certain about the identification, the world of entomology is vast and full of surprises! If you're a beetle expert and know its actual scientific name for sure, please drop a comment below. I'd love to learn more! What an amazing part of the rainforest ecosystem.
Credit for helping us discover this little beauty!
