Port Isaac has a mysterious “mermaid” legend attached to it. According to local folklore, centuries ago, a beautiful mermaid named Morveren fell in love with a fisherman from the village. She would sing from the rocks, enchanting sailors and luring them out to sea. Eventually, the villagers grew fearful of her allure and tried to capture her. In her grief, Morveren is said to have cast a spell to protect herself, cursing the waters and hiding beneath the waves ever since. Some residents say that on quiet nights, they can still hear her singing, echoing from the cliffs around the harbour.
