You slice into a perfectly ripe tomato... and suddenly it looks like the seeds are trying to escape.
Tiny green shoots are pushing through the pulp. Some are only a few millimeters long. Others already have tiny leaves. For a split second, almost everyone thinks the same thing:
"Something has to be wrong with this tomato."
But nothing is wrong.
In fact, you're witnessing something that almost never happens where we're supposed to see it.
A tomato isn't just protecting seeds. It's actively keeping them asleep.
As the fruit develops, hormones inside the tomato tell every seed to wait. Wait until the fruit falls. Wait until it begins to rot. Wait until rain, soil, and sunlight give the next generation a real chance to survive.
Most of the time, those signals work perfectly.
Every now and then, though, nature gets ahead of itself.
As the tomato becomes overripe, those natural chemicals begin to break down. To the seeds, it's as if the fruit has already fallen to the ground and started decomposing. They don't know they're still inside a tomato sitting on your kitchen counter.
They simply do what they've evolved to do for millions of years.
They grow.
That's why vivipary isn't a disease, a parasite, or a bizarre mutation. It's the plant's life cycle accidentally starting one chapter too early.
The amazing part is that those tiny sprouts are already complete little tomato plants. Each one has everything it needs to become a vine capable of producing hundreds more tomatoes.
Sometimes nature doesn't wait for us to plant the seed.
Sometimes the seed decides it's already time.
