Hoy se juega la primera semi-final del Mundial de Clubes y el Fluminense de Brasil que juega contra el Chelsea es el único equipo no europeo que queda en competencia. Y no ha sido por casualidad sino por la autoridad con la que ha jugado y ganado los partidos. Hoy casi toda América apoya al Fluminense. Más que por orgullo americano es por mostrarle al mundo que el fútbol en estos tiempos ya no es eurocéntrico y que el otro eje grande del fútbol mundial en estos momentos está en América, más precisamente en Brasil. Solo los brasileños se le han parado duro a los europeos en este Mundial de Clubes tan emocionante y entretenido. Estoy seguro que muchos en otras partes del mundo también apoyan al Flu, ya sea porque no quieran al Chelsea o porque creen en la idea de que en Brasil se juega el mejor fútbol del mundo, tal y como era hace décadas y tal y como lo manifestaba Oliver Atom en Supercampeones con su idea de que el sitio para ir a jugar el mejor fútbol del mundo era Brasil.
Aquí un homenaje al Fluminense y a su capitán Thiago Silva, un atleta de clase mundial que no solo le ha bastado con jugar con clase y comandando defensas en muchos de los mejores equipos del mundo sino que hoy a sus 40 años sigue jugando en la cúspide en su segunda etapa con el Fluminense.

Uno de mis futbolistas preferidos cumple años hoy. Parabéns a , ídolo siempre. Uno de los ídolos más difíciles de ver por TV en la Colombia alejada de las grandes ciudades a principios de los 2000. Solo lo podía ver cuando me encontraba de suerte con partidos de Portugal o del Benfica en TV pirateada.
Aquí de fondo con los números 21 más chéveres que llevó en las camisetas de Portugal y del Benfica (si viven atentos a los detalles de la tipografía de las camisetas de fútbol de los 2000 seguro identificarán los años de cada número).

Hoy falleció trágicamente Diogo Jota. Grandísimo jugador, cumplidor y excelente definidor. Siempre aportaba cuando se le requirió. Los hinchas de los equipos donde jugó, de la selección de Portugal y del fútbol en general se deleitaron siempre con grandes actuaciones. En mi caso nunca se me olvida el partidazo de Premier League entre el Liverpool y el Tottenham Hotspur, donde el Tottenham empata agónicamente en los últimos minutos de descuento del partido y creyendo asegurado el punto del empate que se llevaban de Anfield vieron incrédulos cómo Diogo Jota capitalizaba con un remate cruzado el error de Lucas Moura que le daba definitivamente los 3 puntos al local. No me gusta hablarle a quienes no están pero deseo que los hinchas del fútbol nunca olviden a este crack.

Diogo Jota tragically passed away today. A great and dedicated player and an excellent finisher. He always delivered when needed. Fans of the teams he played for, of the Portuguese national team, and of football in general were always delighted by his great performances. I’ll never forget the amazing Premier League match between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, where Tottenham agonisingly equalised in the final minutes of injury time. Believing they had secured a point from the draw they were taking from Anfield, they watched in disbelief as Diogo Jota capitalized on Lucas Moura’s mistake with a cross shot, definitively giving the home side the three points. I don’t like talking to those who are no longer here, but I hope football fans never forget this great player and his legacy of ambition and always pushing to perform at his best.
Rest easy, Diogo.

Cuando apenas empezaba a ver fútbol colombiano vi al Medellín campeón con estos protagonistas. Hoy que ya no me importa tanto el fútbol colombiano comparto esta ilustración de ese recuerdo futbolero para apoyar otra vez al Medellín y que vuelvan a quedar campeones hoy en la final del Apertura.

Happy 50th birthday to the great David Beckham. In this illustration he’s wearing Pibe Valderrama’s last ever Colombia match-worn shirt after swapping it at the end of England’s last group stage match of France 98. England advanced to the knock-out stages and eventually lost to Argentina in the following match. Colombia, on the other hand, didn’t make it out of the group stage and crashed out of the World Cup marking the end of an era in Colombian football.

Landscapes of Manizales (Colombia).

I don’t fancy Manizales much. I had a terrible anxiety crisis while I lived there. However, I’m obsessed with its Andean city look and I do keep good memories from when I was little.

The glacier volcano, which is rather close to the city, is mostly hard to see due to clouds and fog. Every time I saw it I enjoyed it a lot, because it made me feel like I had some sort of connection with the ancient cultures from the Andean mountains down the continent.

In the upper landscape of this painting, composed based on two pictures by I explored a hot day sunset, where although the city is already covered by night, the sunset reflection is still visible in the glass façade of the building on the left and its light still hits the plume of smoke coming out of the volcano.

Many years ago, one of my uncles used to take the whole family to the traditional bullfight at night in the January festivities there. I really don’t like bullfights but there were other things that entertained me there. First, I had recently joined a symphonic band aged 9 so I enjoyed listening to the band that played at the arena because we sat in the terrace right below theirs.

Then comes the subject matter of the lower landscape. Said bullfight was called “Festival Taurino”, a special event where bullfighters would wear black instead of their usual gilded outfit. This is because the event is always dedicated to the Virgin of Macarena, and an image of Hers is paraded through the main streets of the city in a procession that ends at the very centre of the bullring. When the procession arrives, the floodlights are turned off and all attendants lit up paper lanterns that they receive upon entering the arena. This creates a beautiful, magically solemn atmosphere that lasts about two minutes before floodlights go back on and the event starts.

Today is my aunt Alba’s birthday. Named Rosalba after her mother (my grandmother) she’s one of my most loved people in the world. She (and my other aunts and grandmother) took full charge of me when my mum emigrated abroad looking for a better future for me. Since my mother was still a university student after having me and lived in another city, I was used to living with my aunt Alba long before she emigrated abroad. My mother tells me that she used to pray to Our Lady Mary everyday on her way to school in a church nearby her home. She prayed for me to be well cared for and for Our Lady to prevent any evil from happening to me. And it seems her prayers were always heard as I had at least 5 mothers caring for me, 4 more aunts and my grandma. But it was always my aunt Alba whom I felt more comfortable with, and she always took me with her everywhere and made me part of her household, even after the birth of her two daughters (pictured here with her). Her birthday coincides with the day Catholics celebrate the Fest of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and when I compare this coincidence with the story of my mother praying for my wellbeing leaves me to think of my mother’s and my aunt’s love for me as a sign of protection from Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
In Colombia, at least in my region, motorised vehicle drivers consider Her as their patron saint and celebrate her parading their vehicles, beeping and setting fireworks on 16th July. I celebrate Her by giving my aunt this painting of Her as a birthday present, to show my aunt, Our Lady and all other maternal figures in my life my love and respect for them.
Hoy cumple años mi tía Alba, una de las personas que más quiero. Hoy cumple años, coincidencialmente el mismo día de la fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen. Yo lo entiendo como un signo de protección de Nuestra Señora del Carmen como respuesta a las plegarias de mi mamá cuando tenía que dejarme al cuidado de otras personas cuando ella tenía que irse a otra ciudad a estudiar o cuando tuvo que emigrar a procurar un mejor futuro para mí; siendo mi tía Alba la encarnación más obvia de la protección de María para conmigo.

Many say Lev Yashin was better but those who do witnessed a different game in a different age with different tactics and different reading of the game. Buffon had been quite an influential figure in his trade even before he reached absolute glory with his nation winning the 2006 World Cup, where he claimed the Golden Glove award to the best ‘keeper. Greats of the game like Manuel Neuer, a World Cup and Golden Glove winner himself, still declare their admiration for Buffon and looked forward to playing against their idol.
Gigi Buffon also played in an era of top ‘keepers, where he battled for recognition as best in the world with some truly legends, namely Iker Casillas, Petr Čech, Edwin van Der Sar (whom Buffon would come to replace as Juventus keeper for a world-record fee from Parma), Fabien Barthez, Dida and the aforementioned Manuel Neuer. Buffon is a loved figure worldwide. His footballing skills, leadership, discipline and laid-back style became a symbol of safety and trust.
Here’s a tribute to The Greatest ‘Keeper of All Time, showing his multiple stages in the game, from a young emergency start that helped Italy win their play-off match for France 1998 coming on to replace injured Gianluca Pagliuca and wearing the #12 shirt typical of substitute ‘keepers, through the spiky hair years and the day he officially became World’s #1, to the captain years in which he not only captained Italy for 8 years but also captained Juventus, was given a general’s rank in PSG and came back as a legend to captain Parma, where it all started for him.
The backdrop of this composition is the rose of the Duomo di Carrara, a cathedral of the city of Carrara where Buffon was born.
The putti angels at the top represent all of us who wanted to become ‘keepers like Gigi, and who went to try and emulate his saves on the streets or in any place where football could be played after watching his games.
