Paris Through the Window: A Summer with Muriel Rousseau in South China

Guangdong’s art scene once again opens its heart to French creativity as Muriel Rousseau, one of France’s most distinctive contemporary artists, returns with a vivid exhibition: “Paris. Fragrance Through the Window”. Organized by Wu Mu International Art Group in collaboration with Experience Art Space, the exhibition brings a sensory blend of urban nostalgia and culinary celebration to South China.

Muriel Rousseau is no stranger to Guangdong's cultural circle. Over the years, her works have been showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions across South China, earning her a loyal following of collectors and art lovers. This latest exhibition, open to the public until August 8th,

Two Collections, One Parisian Soul

“Fragrance Through the Window” features two parallel collections:

“Paris: En Attendant” captures moments glimpsed through Muriel’s own window – fragments of Haussmannian rooftops, gentle skies, and timeless silhouettes of the City of Light. The square canvases, rendered in her signature technique, are bathed in a dreamlike sky-blue backdrop, evoking quiet longing and everyday poetry.

“Cuisine” presents a joyous contrast – vibrant still lifes of fresh market produce and homemade dishes, painted with the affection of someone who cooks, tastes, and lives through food. Whether it’s juicy carrots, œufs mayo, or a simmering teapot, Muriel Rousseau's brush invites the viewer to a table in her Parisian kitchen.

Together, the two series offer a full immersion into Paris – its rooftops and markets, its elegance and domestic warmth.

Art You Can Wear and Share

Adding a delightful twist to the traditional exhibition format, Rousseau’s work extends beyond the canvas. The show features a line of wearable art products, including shopping bags, yoga mats, backpacks, cushion covers, blouses, and tunics – all adorned with her colorful motifs. These pieces let visitors carry a bit of Parisian art into their daily lives, blending functionality with aesthetics.

A Day of Cultural Encounters

On July 27th, the exhibition space transformed into a hub of cross-cultural dialogue. Guests were treated to the meditative sounds of the guqin, followed by a calligraphy workshop, and a brief yet thoughtful reflection by a French designer and writer - Nicolas Melan on the significance of Bastille Day (July 14th) – a celebration of liberty and identity. This enriching afternoon deepened the audience's connection to both French and Chinese cultural heritage.

Meet Cheng Jianwen: The Dot Master of Color and Expression

In the vibrant world of contemporary art, one name that continues to shine brightly is Cheng Jianwen (程建文), a talented artist born in the 1970s in the picturesque Jiangxi province of China. Known for his mesmerizing dot works, Cheng has made a name for himself by creating large canvases that burst with color and character, each piece a testament to his devotion and passion for art.

Cheng’s work stands out in its ability to evoke a sense of peace and joy through the simplest of forms: dots. During my meeting with Cheng Jianwen at the fair, I was struck by the confidence and happiness he exuded. It was clear that he has found his artistic voice and is committed to sharing it with the world. It’s as if he’s made an important decision: to stick to his dots and continue creating marvellous pieces that speak to the chaotic beauty of life.

As Cheng continues to develop his craft, we can expect to see more colorful and captivating works emanating from his studio. He is truly a testament to the idea that, while art can often be a struggle, it is also an intrinsic part of what makes life worth living. What an unforgettable evening at the historic ShuangMeiFu Mansion in Xiaolan Town, Zhongshan City! I had the incredible opportunity to witness the sensational performance of the international band Chak Sang Lam, alongside the talented Lorenzo Ditta from Italy, Hon Chon Chan from Macao, Kobe Gregoire from Belgium, and Xavi Castillo from Spain. This was their first-ever gig together, and they absolutely did not disappoint!

The ambiance of the mansion, wrapped in layers of history, created the perfect backdrop for the show. It felt like the walls themselves were alive, resonating with the vibrant energy of the music. Each note seemed to float through the air, weaving a magical tapestry that drew the audience in. The musicians were truly inspired, pouring their hearts into every song, and it was clear that they were feeding off the energy of the crowd.

The audience was fantastic—so engaging and interactive! It was a joy to see everyone embracing the music, tapping their feet and swaying to the rhythm. The connection between the band and the crowd was electric, creating an atmosphere of pure joy.

And let’s not forget the cherry on top—the mesmerizing harmonica performance by Long DingJie! His talent left us all in awe and added a unique flavor to the concert that we won’t soon forget.

Jazz really does work miracles, bringing together enthusiasts from all corners of the globe. I feel lucky to have experienced this beautiful fusion of culture and artistry last night. Bravo to Chak Sang Lam and the entire band for an evening full of inspiration and magic! 🎉🎷

A from the 2024 event organized by Experience Art Space and partners. It was incredible to see jazz enthusiasts from all over the world coming together to celebrate the timeless beauty of jazz music in Zhongshan, Xiaolan.
Our audience was from from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Colombia, Armenia, Korea, Russia, and many more countries, all sharing their love for jazz, some of them even showcasing their talent on the stage.
The event truly highlighted the universal appeal of jazz and the power of music to bring people together from all corners of the globe.

On April 30th, an unforgettable International Jazz Day event concert was held at Shuang Mei Fu Mansion, hosted by Experience Art Space and Huang Jianbin, the owner of Liu Shen Old Records. The concert brought together jazz enthusiasts and music lovers from all over the city for a night of soulful and electrifying performances.

The lineup for the event featured three incredibly talented musicians: Zilong on the keyboard, Claudia迪亚, and the renowned saxophonist Chen Yifan. Each performer brought their own unique style and energy to the stage, captivating the audience with their mesmerizing melodies and improvisations.

This year's concert was dedicated to the theme of peace and the beauty of our world, and the musicians beautifully conveyed this message through their soul-stirring performances. From upbeat and lively tunes to soulful and mellow melodies, the concert took the audience on a musical journey that celebrated the universal language of music.

In addition to the captivating performances, the event also showcased a special exhibition of rare vinyl jazz records from the personal collection of Huang Jianbin.
